Evening ideas with kids

Hotel grim. Dreading going back with DC. Single parent DC 12 and 8. No cinema chain for miles, local independent one only showing kids stuff until 3pm, no theatres. Weather rubbish so can't really go for walk either. Any other ideas what I can do with them this evening to keep them out for as long as possible?
Sorry posted in AIBU for traffic.

Is there a leisure centre nearby?

sandynotpebbly · 03/08/2017 17:58

No idea where you are but if you have a car, and are in a city/town:

  1. Find closest indoor shopping centre to wander/browse/the customer services metimes have activity plans/offers etc
  2. Find local library (some of my local ones are open late on a Thu in Birmingham).
  3. Ours (similar ages) love playing forfeits (?) etc in the hotel room/eating snacks in the bed (forbidden at home or anywhere else). Not great suggestions, but didnt want to read and not reply.

Bowling? Laser quest? Is there an arcade nearby?

Preciousprincess75 · 03/08/2017 18:01

Bowling? Retail park with shops open till late, usually with a play park? Pub chain for a huge dessert each?

ChocolateRaisin09 · 03/08/2017 18:01

Buy a couple of magazines or take books/games/pen & paper and sit in a family friendly pub?
Bowling?

ChocolateRaisin09 · 03/08/2017 18:05

Big Supermarkets can be open quite late if they are open to having a milkshake/doughnut whatever and testing out the games consoles 😁, or trying on silly clothes.

milliemolliemou · 03/08/2017 18:05

See if dreadful hotel has pack of cards and play three handed card games with 5ps for winners? Do they have a Monopoly board? anything?
Wrap DCs up and go for a walk anyway? finished with fish and chips or whatever and snuggling up with hot chocolate.
Google free things in your area.
Ask grim hotel for advice.
When leaving tell grim hotel it's grim if they haven't been helpful.

Good luck OP. Tell us what you did for those of us in your situation.

Rossigigi · 03/08/2017 20:33

Would help to say where you are for ideas???

Allthebestnamesareused · 03/08/2017 20:35

Board games, charades, uno - all things we happily do on holiday but that I struggle to get them to do at home!

AtSea1979 · 03/08/2017 20:36

Thank you!
We loitered around the supermarket for a while. Had a drink/dessert and bought some snacks for later (now). The rain held off so we went for a walk but about 20 mins in DD complained of tummy ache so we had to make a quick dash back and just made it in time phew not stopped her stuffing crisps in now mind
Currently all in bed watching Hook. Only kids film I could find.

Whereabouts are you OP?

SPARKLYSTARSHINESBRIGHT · 03/08/2017 21:09

Geocaching, if you download the App you can hunt for treasure.

AtSea1979 · 03/08/2017 21:10

I'll have a look at the app now.

I'm near Malvern

Grounds look nice. Weather supposed to be better tomorrow. Get a little pop up tent for picnic.

AtSea1979 · 03/08/2017 21:18

I had no idea geocaching existed. I can't believe I've been missing this. It's like real life Pokémon. I can't wait to go out now.

skerfuffled · 03/08/2017 21:21

Malvern Splash (swimming pool) is open till about 10pm, might be worth a visit OP

AtSea1979 · 03/08/2017 22:14

Thanks, will take a look.

How did I not know about Geocaching before now? I can't wait to head out tomorrow and do it

If you can, try and make it to Worcester. There is a theatre, two cinemas, a big library with excellent kids section and café which is open til 10. Plenty of places to eat (I recommend Creams dessert cafe which is open til 10!) there are trains back every hour until 10ish. There are also easy trains to Hereford, with cinema, theatre, kid-friendly restaurants (not sure about a library though)

KeepServingTheDrinks · 03/08/2017 23:56

If you're going to do geocashing I recommend:
Get some cheap little bits n pieces - tat and stationary work well - to leave behind.
You'll need a pen/pencil so you can record your finds
Wet wipes or hand sanitisers.

Geocashing's great.

Enjoy!

KeepServingTheDrinks · 03/08/2017 23:58

btw, a pack of cards is one of my 'must packs' on holiday.

Does the library offer board games on loan? Or maybe some for sale cheaply in a charity shop?

AtSea1979 · 04/08/2017 22:39

Thanks for the suggestions. We went go karting, expensive and not as fun as I thought. And laser tag, was brilliant, never been before. There was just us 3 but it was great family fun, only 15 mins so quite expensive but DC chatting about it all way back unlike carting
Rest of evening spent watching Usain and Mo, to which they said "who"? so I told them to sit down and watch and learn. They were impressed!
Leaving Malvern tomorrow to head further south.
