Hi! LO is currently 3 weeks and 5 days old, at birth we tried breastfeeding and she would latch but wouldn't suck so we then transitioned her onto the bottle (cow and gate formula) now she use to route around my chest and when we would try again she wouldn't even take notice into it but today whilst in the bath she cuddled up to my boob and latched out of no where...! & actually took some milk, but my concern now is that I think she is confused 🤷‍♀️ When we tried in the hospital it really hurt to the point I was crying but today when she latched it didn't hurt one bit, I would love to breast feed her as I love the close contact but will I be producing enough of my milk now given the big break? Has anyone else been in this situation? Thankyou

Carry on doing both. You will start producing eventually to completely be enough for her, but for now carry on with formula to make sure she has enough.

Fabulous though she has managed to learn Smile

Just feed feed feed, it is by no means impossible to bf at this stage but your baby will need to feed a lot to stimulate milk production, you will also still need to use f for also while. You need to work out a proper plan for bf so i'd give the nct bf helpline or LLL a call.

Callamia · 03/08/2017 13:32

Exactly this. You can transition over time, there's still plenty of time to build supply - esp if you're both keen.

We were late today the party because of my son's early stay in NICU. We just transitioned from bottle to breast in our own time.

I would carry on doing both and you could always pump to increase your supply if you wanted to just breastfed or try a breastfed every time she's hungry followed by some formula to make sure she's full and gaining weight. You'll know by how much formula she's taking whether she's getting a full breastfeed and hopefully at some point she'll start refusing the formula you offer straight after a fed as she'll be full from you.

MyLittlePickleBoo · 03/08/2017 13:34

Absolutely possible, of course! Stop the formula now and keep latching her on. Her sucking will stimulate your milk production and it'll get going really quickly! :)

If you're on FB go join the 'Breastfeeding younger babies and beyond' group. An old friend of mine is one of the admin and she really is a guru! Grin They are brilliant on there and will have loads of advice, support and helpful tips for you!

I did a combination of both when my LO was born as long as they are getting what they need I found mine didn't really care. I think lots of people combination feed without issues

The more she sucks & feeds the more you will produce. The more formula you give her the less milk your breasts will produce. Have a look at the "Kelly mom" website, it's very American but gives amazing very practical advice for breastfeeding

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 03/08/2017 13:39

I did exactly this with ds1

He was 3.5 weeks old when we finally got him to feed

Mix of both til i was producing plenty of my own milk

He stopped breast feeding when he was 17 months old
