Inappropriate pop songs

Why are so many pop songs so inappropriate in their content? I hear my to young daughters sometimes singing songs that they hear at birthday parties or after school clubs etc and often the lyrics are so inappropriate! Why is this becoming more acceptable?. And the swearing in the lyrics? The same with music videos. Why does everything need be constantly so smutty in order to be seemingly provocative?! I am constantly switching off the radio when popular songs come on as I really don't want them hearing this rubbish!

I think what you meant to say was inappropriate for children. We can't censor the world because kiddywinks are in it.

OohMavis · 04/08/2017 07:28

I don't think it's ANY different to songs in the 80s and 90s, I really don't.

Meatloaf came on in the car the other day and I was gobsmacked at one of the lyrics, completely flew over my head until then! And that's a mild example.

It'll go over their heads until they're old enough to understand the context.

At my Y6 school disco the boys and girls took it in turns to dance for the opposite sex. So, girls at the side of the hall watching the boys, then switch. This was done by the DJ near the end. Do you know which song was played when it was the girls' turn?

The Pussycat Dolls - Buttons

I'm telling you loosen up my buttons, baby (uh huh)
But you keep fronting (uh)
Saying what you going to do to me (uh huh)
But I ain't seen nothing (uh)

Typical
Hardly the type I fall for
I like when the physical
Don't leave me asking for more
I'm a sexy mama (mama)
Who knows just how to get what I want and (want and)
What I want to do is spring this on you (on you)
Back up all of the things that I told you (told you)

You been saying all the right things all night long
But I can't seem to get you over here to help take this off
Baby, can't you see
How these clothes are fitting on me
And the heat coming from this beat?
I'm about to blow
I don't think you know

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 04/08/2017 07:36

How about The Beatles, Please Please Me? Took me a while to get that one!

Sunshinegirls · 04/08/2017 07:39

I agree.
Katy Perry. Peacock

"I wanna see your peacock cock cock
Your peacock cock. "

Hearing that come out of your 6 yr old DD's mouth is horrendous!

ZuriWanders · 04/08/2017 07:40

Just be thankful it's pop they are hearing and not grime music! Hmm

YokoReturns · 04/08/2017 07:45

Yep, Please Please Me is definitely about oral sex!

Perhaps a bit more 'coded' than some of today's lyrics though?

The Outhere Brothers were mentioned on a thread recently - that album was horrific, lyrical content-wise...

PutThatPomBearBack · 04/08/2017 07:47

I wouldn't worry. I used to sing some absolute filth, but had no idea what it meant Grin

wherethewildthingis · 04/08/2017 07:47

I hate hate hate that Kesha one -"timber". The bloody rap lyrics -
"Face down booty up
That's the way we like em"

And the truly horrible "she say she won't but I bet she will".

Just awful on so many levels.

Can I recommend the kidzbop Album? Pop stuff re recorded and sung by kids with nice sanitised lyrics. My son and kids friends love them !

StickThatInYourPipe · 04/08/2017 07:49

When we were kids we had 'Sex on the beach' 'the thong song' 'I'm horny' and loads of others played at our school discos.

I fail to see how today is any worse tbh

I'm pretty chilled out but I did cringe once when a group of 8year old girls performed Katy Perry "Last Friday Night"... word for word

NancyDonahue · 04/08/2017 08:10

Dd loves Grease but I cringe at Greased Lightening. However, I was her age when I loved it too and I had no idea that 'getting lots of tit' and 'chicks'll cream' was rude!

Winterc00kie · 04/08/2017 08:10

well the current song that comes on the radio at the moment is by The Weekend "I feel it coming" and then there's that cringe line of and the heat between your legs. Iccck!

I'm not a prude it's just a grim line. Makes me think of the term moist gussett.

Pellasalla · 04/08/2017 08:11

Has anyone heard little mix song beep beep?
"Too busy dreaming of jumping on your dick"
Even I was shocked Grin

DonaldStott · 04/08/2017 08:14

Can I recommend the kidzbop Album

Yes to this. Always on the Alexa in our house.

RandomDent · 04/08/2017 08:18

50s pop music is pure filth. I was trying to play some for a history lesson once and there weren't many I was comfortable playing for primary children.

woodhill · 04/08/2017 08:19

Oh crumbs, never really thought about please, please me by Beatles.

Thought it was about the girl being difficult and being non committal rather than sexual?

Yes the lyrics go over your head.

Exodus - I want to kiss you all over
Carol - Smokey, no idea at 10 what they are on about.

ZuriWanders · 04/08/2017 08:23

Imagine my grandparents horror when I tricked my grandfather into buying me an Eminem CD when I was 11, because he seemingly didn't know what the Explicit Content sticker meant/he didn't see it. Get home and the first song is Fack. Wink

Fan ever since Grin

Winterc00kie · 04/08/2017 08:29

@pellasalla

Just seen!

Boy you're so sexy, just like your Cadillac
Just come and get me, 'cause I can't hold it back
People on the street watch us in the backseat

A bit of doggin in there too pp! Those girls are filth!

wordy17 · 04/08/2017 08:31

I do think that a lot of the lyrics go right over kids' heads, thankfully. I still remember by dad telling me off for singing 'ob la di, ob la da' when I was a kid. (ok yes it was a very long time ago)

By the way, I still don't know what's wrong with those lyrics to 'ob la di' Hmm

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 04/08/2017 08:32

I'll probably sound like a right pearl clutcher saying this, and I can't remember the name of the song or the breathy female singer helpful, but the chorus goes 'I'm feeling sexual/So we should be sexual'.

Yeah. Imagine if it was a bloke singing that.

TathitiPete · 04/08/2017 13:15

At least someone like Rihanna was always rather sexuak. Little Mix used to be all colourful hair and baggy pants. Now they're more "I hope she's getting better sex' and " He was just a dick and I knew it" and thrusting their hips and wearing skin tight, skin coloured bodysuits. Obviously they can do what they want - girl power- but its a shame when, when given the choice, girl chose the path of hyper sexualized.

TathitiPete · 04/08/2017 13:16

Sorry, Rihanna was always sexual, not sexuak - should've proofread that Blush

Hudson10 · 04/08/2017 13:20

Why are so many pop songs so inappropriate in their content?

Pfft, that's hardly a new phenomena!
I'm sure the 80s version of you would have had to have the smelling salts passed at 8 year old me singing "Like A Virgin, touch for the very first time....." Smile
