Freshly cut and deep fried potatoes (twice) and the most gorgeous batter. All for £3.50.

Delicious.

I love the fish and chips from Something's Cooking in Letterston in South Wales. It's an annual treat for us 😀

LittleLeif · 03/08/2017 09:12

Mr Chips. A small for £3.00. The largest fish you have ever seen. Portion of chips to feed the 5,000. Queues out the door though Sad.

wildbhoysmama · 03/08/2017 09:13

It's a poke of chips here in Glasgow too and an ice cream when I was growing up was a pokey hat. Although my mam and uncles and aunts were brought up by an Irish dad and i think that's where it came from. Like pp said Butterfly and pig is yum, but if you want to slum it Jack McPhee's just off Sauchiehall street gives you delish fish the size of a small child with tea, bread and mushy peas! My boys love it there- a real, down to earth treat.

LittleLeif · 03/08/2017 09:13

Also we live in a coastal town so we get to have them buy the sea Grin

MaidOfStars · 03/08/2017 10:32

I'm reading a book by a Scottish author and he uses 'poke of crisps/sweets'.

anchor9 · 03/08/2017 20:55

had a lovely fash and chips for lunch today, finally. naice pub though so £13 Blush Sad

WildKiwi · 03/08/2017 21:32

I love that you call it a fish supper. No one says that here and you've made me all smiley thinking of home. They don't put vinegar on either, just cover it in salt and give you a piece of lemon Hmm

BabychamSocialist · 03/08/2017 21:50

I could just go for a fish dinner now - fish, chips and peas and scraps. Mmm. Only £4.00 for that! (I won't name it for fear of other people discovering this delightful and cheap chippy!)

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 03/08/2017 21:52

I had a fish supper yesterday for lunch, with tartar sauce was delicious

HooplaLoopla1 · 03/08/2017 21:52

Fried naan? I've never heard of that!

BeachyKeen · 03/08/2017 21:57

We just had a fish supper tonight, deep fried haddock, double fried chips ( with curry sauce) , coleslaw, and pasta salad.
I only got through half but it was sooooo good!

lucydogz · 03/08/2017 21:59

i love a nice white pudding supper. The best chippies are in Scotland (fact)

Namebot · 03/08/2017 22:01

I'm in edinburgh - where is the deep fried cauliflower that you speak of?

BabychamSocialist · 03/08/2017 22:16

Double cooked chips? Salad? Bah! That's not a real chippy!

Chips should be cooked in lard or failing that vegetable oil - the thickest, greasiest type you can get. No salad! But if you have to have it, it should be a miserable piece of cucumber and a few lettuce leaves in a little plastic bag!

Why in the name of all that is holy did I read this thread on a fast day?

Fozzleyplum · 03/08/2017 22:21

Floella, is it the Alba D'Oro in Edinburgh? Iirc, they fry all sorts of veg-it's like Scottish tempura!

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 03/08/2017 22:41

A depressingly long time ago I went to uni in Edinburgh and I still have to remind myself not to say fish supper (live in Surrey now and they don't understand).

I lived in a variety of flats around South Clerk Street and my local chippy on that esteemed boulevard would batter and deep fry any confectionery in their rack for £1 on top of the normal retail price. I never got too adventurous but I can report that a deep fried jaffa cake is v nice.Grin

Floellabumbags · 04/08/2017 00:50

Fozzley you're right, it is the Alba dOro. I seem to recall they do all sorts of unusual fish as well.
