"I am emailing to let you know that unfortunately I am feeling very unwell, after coming down with food poisoning symptoms late ast night. I am currently trying to book a doctor's appointment for later this morning and will do my best to come in later today if things improve at all; in the meantime, I am happy to work from home"

Depends on your reporting policy, we have to report by phone and in person, what does your policy say? If you can report by email then it is fine.

ilovesooty · 02/08/2017 08:44

I don't know what your work policies are but I would be expected to speak directly with a manager and not attend work if I'd been having food poisoning symptoms.

ThePinkOcelot · 02/08/2017 08:44

Aren't you supposed to ring in sick? My work place wouldn't accept that.

Fluffyears · 02/08/2017 08:44

If it was food poisoning you'd not be able to work from home, unless you can work from the bog. I think you've just got an upset stomach.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 02/08/2017 08:44

It depends what your policy is.

Where DH works it wouldn't cut it. It needs to be a phone call

Ijustwantaquietlife · 02/08/2017 08:44

I wouldn't say anything other than unwell.

Do you really need a doctor's appointment? Any underlying health issues?

hatgirl · 02/08/2017 08:45

Depends on what it says in your employee handbook about ringing in sick. Mine is very clear that it has to be a phone call and not an email.

Also if you are sick you are sick. If you are fit to work at home then you probably don't need a doctors appointment...

Jakadaal · 02/08/2017 08:45

Yes and no as most places require you to phone in. Also if you are ill you are ill so should not be working from home. I work in the public sector and people who are off sick also say they are working from home - it's either one or the other imo

Ijustwantaquietlife · 02/08/2017 08:45

And I hate "unwell working from home" and wish I could ban it.

SolomanDaisy · 02/08/2017 08:46

You can't offer to go into work after vomiting and diarrhoea! And why would you go to the doctor for that? So it's a bit of a weird email. Is it true?

Ilovewillow · 02/08/2017 08:46

We always expect a phone call but other than that reason for not coming in is fine - it might not be food poisoning and a bug so don't be surprised if they ask not to come in at all! Hope you feel better soon!

Ollycat · 02/08/2017 08:47

I think you need to phone. Also why see the doctor if you think you may be able to come to work this afternoon? You're either well enough to work or not so don't get the working from home but.

Phone work and have an upfront conversation as to what's wrong rather then cryptic emails. Weird question to ask strangers on the internet!

Ginslinger · 02/08/2017 08:48

unless you have underlying health issues you really don't need a GP appt - I'd just tell them you have an upset stomach and won't be in.

AdelicaArundel · 02/08/2017 08:48

It's wishy-washy.

Depends what your work procedures are re absences first- call or email in?
Then, you're either sick and can't work or you're not that bad so should be doing your best to get in.

Pleasehelpaicknessss · 02/08/2017 08:48

I am sick but new job so trying to be as accommodating as possible. Yes unfortunately it's true

caffeinestream · 02/08/2017 08:48

If you're too ill to go to work, you shouldn't be volunteering to work from home - it looks a bit like you're staying home for an appointment or to wait in for a parcel but you don't want to say because it wouldn't be allowed.

Also - are you allowed to email in? We have to phone in sick and speak to a manager.

Hope you're feeling better soon Flowers

smurfit · 02/08/2017 08:49

Depends on your office. I usually just send an email with the subject line 'I won't be in today'. Sometimes I call if I can't see my phone screen to type but most people in the office call in this way.

Also - in our office it's considered really bad form to go in with a stomach virus. Aside from being a bit stinky, it could be easily passed onto the other staff. So I occasionally work from home (but with the software I use it's a little hard).

p51642 · 02/08/2017 08:49

I'd call (as we have to) and say I'm not feeling well enough to come in and only tell them what is wrong if they asked don't offer to work from home just see what they say on the phone. I wouldn't be allowed to email.

ghostyslovesheets · 02/08/2017 08:49

I email my manager but that's not policy where I work - it's just that we work different days - but I also ring the office and inform them

NO WAY would I be offering to work from home - if I am sick I am sick - and if you have D+V stay away from work !

If you are ill you need to be off work

chronicleink · 02/08/2017 08:50

We have to ring in and at least leave a message, barring being actually unconscious. You should probably do that out of courtesy.

WhichJob · 02/08/2017 08:50

Phone. My workplace banned everything else because people got to the point where they were firing off quick texts to their bosses!

kaytee87 · 02/08/2017 08:51

Most work places will not accept an email instead of a phone call. You don't need a doctors appointment because you have v&d for one day, there's nothing they can do about it. If you're too ill to work then you shouldn't be working from home, probably against most workplaces policies.
Pick up the phone, call your boss/hr and just say you're really sorry but you won't be able to come in today as you have vomiting and diarrhoea.

feathermucker · 02/08/2017 08:51

You need to speak to them. Plus, you won't be able to go in later today at all! Not if you have symptoms of food poisoning etc.

Ijustwantaquietlife · 02/08/2017 08:51

All these people saying to call it is standard practice to call but I've had line managers that are really difficult to speak to and they were fine with an email copied into HR.

Calling when there is no sick pay is ridiculous though.

PurpleDaisies · 02/08/2017 08:52

I've always had to phone in sick rather than email.

If you're sick enough to need a doctor's appointment, can you genuinely work from home?
