To wonder why people stand at the bottom of my drive looking at my dog?

For context...we live on a high street in a rural town. We're at the "quiet end" so no shops here but a pub next door.

We have a drive leading from the high street to our garden...it's pretty long but you can clearly see our big gates which separate our back garden from the driveway....our dog sleeps in the garden by the gate.

He's a distinctive dog....a big one. People sometimes stop by the end of the drive and stare at him which makes him bark.

They then stand there STILL staring!

I went out earlier today to see why he was having a hissy fit and there was a man of about 60 standing there staring.

So I said "Are you ok?" and he said "I'M ok!" as though the dog was being unreasonable!

The dog hadn't barked for long...just a few but Loud and he'd been fast asleep moments before so I know it was another dog tourist.

This man then wanted to know WHY the dog was bloody barking!

He doesn't bark if people don't stand and stare at him!

Wtf? It happens at least twice a week...the other week there was a whole family standing there looking at him whilst he barked his nuts off.

Have people no sense?

He's a big, white dog...good looking and all that yes...but he's not THAT remarkable!

I would stop and look at that dog. It is a magnificient beast. Grin I think you should swap it for a Staffie or a whippet then you will have a quiet life. I will pm you my details to arrange pick-up.

asprinklingofsugar · 01/08/2017 13:46

I'd also stop and aww at him (especially if I had my dog, because he likes to say hello to other dogs Grin), but would, and have done in the past, quickly move away if I sensed he was becoming upset.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/08/2017 13:49

OP - was this a stealth boast :)

graceyg · 01/08/2017 13:50

Sorry I would stare too! Guilty - what a beautiful creature!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 01/08/2017 13:51

I'd be careful using bamboo screening if he's likely to stand up on it with his paws, it can be very sharp if it splinters.

mrscropley · 01/08/2017 13:52

Turtle - we have the most beautiful husky yet when we are out it's our scratty Lurcher that gets the most attention!!

reallybadidea · 01/08/2017 13:52

You know those signs you can get 'Please beware of the dog"? Maybe you could get one made that says 'Please don't look at the dog' Grin

Jaxhog · 01/08/2017 13:53

They ARE gorgeous though, so people are probably wondering what breed he is.

I think it's dog thing. My DB has a whippet. He's quite young and just about everyone stops to pet him (which he loves).

SparklyLeprechaun · 01/08/2017 13:55

Yab totally U. That's one gorgeous dog, I would be glued to your gate looking at him. I'd probably run away if he started barking at me though.

simon50 · 01/08/2017 13:56

What a great looking dog, I can see why people stand and stare, I would be asking myself "what breed of dog is that?"
At the end of the day he is doing one of the things you have him for, to let anyone who's up to no good that he's on guard.
Give him a pat from me.

LesisMiserable · 01/08/2017 14:01

I had a huge black newfoundland and she was so beautiful everyone stopped and stared. It made me love her all the more that other people appreciated her and it never annoyed me people looking at her, she was just gorgeous 💜

Zaphodsotherhead · 01/08/2017 14:05

Everyone stops me to talk to my Patterdale. Unfortunately she's barky and nippy so I have to kind of rein her back, when everyone just wants to stroke her.

She's very pretty though.

Swap?

pieceofpurplesky · 01/08/2017 14:07

Everyone stops to look at my little black pug - he sulks if people don't! (I rescued him before anyone talks about pugs)

Alpacaandgo · 01/08/2017 14:10

You have a dog that looks like a polar bear sat at your front gate. Brilliant! Grin I think the only way to stop people looking is to either stop your dog sleeping by the front gate or put a screen along the bottom of the gates or something so he can't see out/people can't see him.

Soubriquet · 01/08/2017 14:10

Maremmas are not very common in this country so I get people staring

But yes I would probably walk away if the dog started barking too

Sluttybartfast · 01/08/2017 14:13

I would totally stare. I'd probably leave if he started barking... unless I had my toddler with me, who would fearlessly stand there barking back. "WOOF! WOOF!"

FluffyWhiteSlippers · 01/08/2017 14:13

He's so lovely. I'd stare at him for hours!

iMatter · 01/08/2017 14:17

I would stare.

And say "hello you gorgeous boy, aren't you the handsomest dog in the world ever. Yes you are, yes you are".

pieceofpurplesky · 01/08/2017 14:18

And I would also stare

ASDismynormality · 01/08/2017 14:20

I'd stop and look at him, sounds like a gorgeous dog. Sorry!

Devonishome1 · 01/08/2017 14:22

I think I'd stare/ look too. He looks a beauty.

ChrisPrattsFace · 01/08/2017 14:23

I would give my left leg for a maremma and have never met one, or anyone who knows what they are... so yes, I would stare for a very long time. Even if he was barking. And probably ask to meet him.... Grin

ineedamoreadultieradult · 01/08/2017 14:24

I would stare at him, I might even continue I'd he started barking as I bet he has a magnificent bark on him. People stand outside my house tapping on the window because that's where the cats sit. Doesn't bother me people like pets.

WickedGirl · 01/08/2017 14:24

He is beautiful

Do you mind me asking what breeder you used?

I currently have a leonberger and am thinking of getting another large dog. Most big dogs are a bit slobbery (out Newfoundland was very slobbery) so I am looking at breeds that are family friendly and dry mouthed

user1497997754 · 01/08/2017 14:25

Wow he is like a huge cuddly bear....I would stop and want to give him a big hug.....but then I am a dog lover with 2 lovely golden retrievers...
