Can I buy a house with land 1 hr from London?

AIBU to ask mumsnetters if they can (in light of my shocking lack of geographical knowledge) recommend any affordable countryside areas within an hour train journey of London? Anywhere considered, would like an acre of land and a 1 hr commute, budget 650k. Is there anywhere?! Thanks!

I would have thought so, but the train fares could be £4000+ per person per year.

Maybe try the Rochester area.

ColossalKalamari · 31/07/2017 20:18

Around Ashford should get you there easy, about 40mins from London

Countrydreams · 31/07/2017 20:25

Will look into those, thanks. Great to have a starting place as I've looked Sussex / Surrey a bit but 650k doesn't seem anywhere near enough to get even half an acre. Thanks again.

Kent is your friend. Or maybe Bedfordshire if you want to go north.

Loopytiles · 31/07/2017 20:29

Is the land a must?

Polly99 · 31/07/2017 20:33

Near ashford (55 mins to Kings Cross). 3.6 acres and 3 bedrooms. 3.6 acres

InigoTaran · 31/07/2017 20:34

Northamptonshire?

PlausibleSuit · 31/07/2017 20:36

Essex or Bedfordshire perhaps. There are some nice villages and rural spots around Peterborough but I think the journey is a little over an hour on the train.

Countrydreams · 31/07/2017 20:41

Thanks, definitely going to look at Kent. The land is essential or I'd just buy where we are in Sussex. Thanks again!

Wow, you can get loads more for your money in Kent than Sussex. I didn't realise that the commute from Kent was doable. Thanks everyone!

I'd go Kent...cheap good train routes. Which area of London do you need to commute into as that might guide which bit if Kent.

Kent btw is lovely and very undiscovered....

Countrydreams · 31/07/2017 20:44

Not quite enough land Inigo but interesting property, thanks.

Thank you, office is by London Bridge. Definitely going to explore Kent. Is there a Brighton of Kent?! Love the feel of Brighton but appreciate it is probably unique in a lot of ways.

Whistable has the vibe of Brighton. Not sure about train times. Deal is also lovely.

Groupie123 · 31/07/2017 20:51

Bedfordshire.

Cambridgeshire but not Cambridge itself.

Around Ely way.

Raver84 · 31/07/2017 20:52

If you like Brighton you may like whitstable in kent which in itself is quite expensive and won't come with land but is a short jorrney 20 min or so down the motorway from the medway towns where there is a fast train into London

dangerrabbit · 31/07/2017 20:54

What about margate if you want a Brighton feel? On the high speed rail line. Could also explore near ebbsfleet.

Petalflowers · 31/07/2017 20:56

Missy - sorry, why a monkey?

MimsyFluff · 31/07/2017 20:59

The pictures in the first link you posted there is a rather large monkey lingering around Shock
