Man in post office tried to do this!

Was in a queue at post office this morning with ds and did. Man in front of us is called to the desk with the shoebox he is carrying. Post Office man asks what is inside (as they normally do) and man replies...

..a Guinea Pig. Shock

A live Guinea pig. He wants to send it to his daughter who lives in X (city about 100 miles from here). Post Office man tells he he can't because it will be hurt/killed/escape etc and post office won't accept live animals. Man argues, throws a tantrum and storms off leaving the box and the Guinea pig on the desk. Sad

Post Office staff decided to call rspca amongst themselves. But my kids were upset at poor Guinea pig being abandoned... So we offered to look after him for them. DH (once he got over the shock) is now cleaning out a borrowed hutch for him and we'll buy him one if man doesn't come back for him (we left contact details with po just in case he did)

Aibu to think anyone could be so cruel and stupid Hmm?

Must have been hungry because he went straight to the food

Trust me - it may only have been 20minutes since he was fed.

Guinea pigs are ALWAYS hungry.

You can have them crushed against the back of the hutch with goodies, and by the time you've closed the door they are sucking down the last dandelion leaf and belching quite on top of a pile of poo. (Very good compost by the way!)

They are proper little chatterboxes, too - they speak, squeal, "whup" growl, purr and many other noises - they are an absolute joy. I really miss ours (we had them when the kids were young).

Almost unbelievable that people are so stupid. Glad the guinea pig rescuers were on hand and that the little mite is being well cared for Thank goodness you were in the queue!

Well done you and dc, for rescuing the poor little creature. It was certainly GP's lucky day, who knows what would have happened to him if left with that man.

If he does call for the GP, tell him it died of shock and you've just buried it in your garden.

Update that the Rspca inspector rang and is coming out to see "Pat" later in the week. They also want his shoebox
(presumably for evidence in case they find the original owner??)

I hope they do find the man and fine him for being so stupid.

I'm glad pat has a new home. Shame you're so far away as our guinea pigs recently died (7+ yrs old) so had hutch, indoor hutch and loads of accessories play tubes etc.

Some people are just awful aren't they! Well done you for rescuing the poor little one

They also do really well if they get to spend time outdoors. We had a moveable hutch for ours and put them outside whenever it was vaguely dry.

The RSPCA have no legal powers unicorn they can't fine people!

Pics, please, OP! Smile We have two sisters, Polly and Peggy, who are six now.

Remember piggies need a constant supply of hay (or grass if in the garden) to graze on. You can get vitamin solution to put in their water - they need vit C as they can't make it themselves. Our girls also have gp nuggets and muesli which we put in wee pots clipped to the bars. As daily treats they love dandelion leaves or parsley, also carrot and apple. Oh, and a small cat carrier is much better for transport than flimsy gp carriers.

Remember the claws will need regular clipping. They're very tough so you'll need special pet clippers. It's easier with 2 people - one to hold piggie front towards you, one hand under bum and the other under front legs, around their chest, while you clip.

Check out your nearest pet shop that does small pet holiday boarding if you don't have anyone to care for your piggie while you're away - it usually doesn't cost much.

Enjoy your rescued piggie - you're a star! 🌟 Smile
