"muscle weighs more than fat"

Sounds right, muscle is all dense and hard, fat is flabby, but is it correct? Can anyone quantify it?

Spurtle · 31/07/2017 08:58

Yes, it's correct. I can't remember the actual numbers, but it's something like 1lb of fat is 2.5x the size of 1lb of muscle.

sendcoffee · 31/07/2017 08:59

muscle is denser not heavier.

1lb of fat weighs the same as 1lb of muscle, but the muscle takes up less room.

It annoys me when people say it weighs more! that's not possible Smile

echt · 31/07/2017 09:00

Hang on! A pound is a pound. If you're talking mass, which is different, then lean muscle takes up less space than fat.

1lb of muscle weighs the same as 1lb of fat Wink

But I know what you mean, and you're right. Someone who is a size 10 but very muscly will probably weigh more than someone with the exact same measurements but who has a higher body fat percentage.

What sendcoffee said

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 31/07/2017 09:01

What coffee said. It's the same as "starvation mode" - a dieting half-truth. I get so pissed off when somebody says they're not losing weight and people ask "yes, but are you eating enough?" Angry

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2017 09:01

Sorry I did mean denser yes
Most people use the two interchangeably

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2017 09:02

Super I am with you on the starvation mode thing. Sounds like bad science to me

OnlyTheWelshCanCwtch · 31/07/2017 09:02

A pound of fat will weigh the same as a pound of muscle weight wise, the volume/mass will be different though

EyeHalveASpellingChequer · 31/07/2017 09:02

1 cubic centimetre of muscle will weigh more than 1 cubic centimetre of fat.

Looneytune253 · 31/07/2017 09:02

The age old argument. Just depends how you look at it. I see it as if you had a cup of each the muscle would be heavier yes.

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2017 09:03

Am I allowed to say I weigh more than a new born baby? Pound for pound we weigh the same :)

OP posts:
NewPapaGuinea · 31/07/2017 09:03

The argument stems from people obsessing about weight loss rather than fat loss. If you take 2 people who are both 12 stone, one has more lean tissue than the other who is going to look better?

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2017 09:03

Or lead weighs more than feathers

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2017 09:04

Can anyone quantify it

Helspopje · 31/07/2017 09:04

Starvation mode is not bad science
Eating too few calories drives cortisol up and disrupts the leptin-gherkin axis so means your body is 'stressed' into maintaining body stores

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2017 09:06

Hels you're the first person who has given a scientific sounding answer when I've asked. Still not convinced :) but thank you

OP posts:
Mrsmorton · 31/07/2017 09:11

Isn't ghrelin the hunger hormone, not gherkin...

MaidOfStars · 31/07/2017 09:12

Fat density: 0.9 grams per ml (g/ml).
Muscle density: 1.1 g/ml.

This means that muscle is around 20% denser than fat, and the same weight will take up around 20% less volume than fat.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 31/07/2017 09:13

I also recall reading somewhere that "starvation mode" only lasts around 3 days and therefore doesn't have a significant effect on weight loss. Can't cite a source though because I can't remember where I read it.

VLCD work-the problem is it's not a sustainable way to diet. You'll get hungry after the initial novelty wears off and potentially binge. They're too restrictive. I think that's where the starvation mode "myth" has come about. "Cheat meals" don't help matters either in some cases-if you eat 1400kcal a day then a 4000kcal "cheat meal" and your BMR is 1600kcal you need to burn another 2600kcal in additional exercise to offset the cheat.
