AIBU?

To expect a 16 and 19yr old to keep their room tidy

Inspired by another thread I have a quick question to ask.
16 and 19 yr old work three days during the summer.
Is it unrealistic to expect them to have a tidy bedroom?
Nice rooms each.

DH TB says all teenagers have untidy rooms.

Only rule here is no food in bedrooms. Always has been like that. Dd the worst. So much stuff. 2ds havent too much except clothes which usually end up being dumped into laundry basket at irregular intervals. I pay no attention. Dh cracks down once a year.

Gosh, I love these ideas here, especially the wi-fi passwords. And the Ikea analogy is spot on. I have a 16 yr old DD, she's mostly not too bad, but sometimes I'll just go in and tidy for her. She really likes it when it's been tidied and I'm hoping she'll be inspired to maintain it. I have, in the past, gone down the PA route & resorted to printing off a large sign saying 'My name is DD, I am 16 and still cannot make my own bed'

I ignore it. As long as the door opens and closes properly and it doesn't smell then I don't care. However if it doesn't go in the washing basket then it doesn't get washed and if it gets broken from being on the floor then it doesn't get replaced. If plates/glasses disappear then I threaten to charge 50p per plate I find. Only had to actually dock pocket money once and none go up now.

If it smells and it doesn't get sorted then I'd sort it, but I sort with black bags and a trip to the tip so none have risked it yet.

I don't find nagging helps. I'm untidy but I tidy because things get lost or broken otherwise. DD1 and 2 are mych tidier since they broke an expensive make up palette they had jointly saved for when it ended up under stuff. Much more effective than me nagging.

Why would you care? It's their space surely?
