To be sick of people using "going to the races" as a reason to act like debauched idiots

There was a popular race day near me yesterday and the behavior of people after it was disgusting. People drunk to unconscious state, blokes pissing everywhere, glass smashed, groups being chucked out of local pubs. All these people dressed in vulgar, "posh" (their intepretation) clothing. Everyone puffing on nasty candy e-cigs.

It's the same at and after many race meetings now. Just awful.

Be good if we could quarantine racegoers from Middlesbrough's! (Sorry ...)

Did go a few days ago only to witness a man wielding a machete! (We understand it was a traveller's dispute). Also, have been on train and required a police escort to get out of the station due to violence erupting. I dread the races now and they drive most locals out of town.

sobeyondthehills · 30/07/2017 10:45

I use to have to change at Ascot, I fucking hated race week for that exact reason

Godstopper · 30/07/2017 10:45

*Not days - years.

We went to a ladies day recently, it was certainly an eye opener.

Especially at the end when everyone was making their way back to the coaches. Peeing in bushes I can just about understand, even though there were no queues at any of the loos on the way out but peeing in full view (and I do mean FULL VIEW) of all the cars driving out was just a tad too much for me.

But their dresses did look lovely Wink

Horse racing (and those who help the business by attending meetings) are bad enough without adding drunken twattish behaviour to the mix. Would love to see this "sport" die out but unfortunately I can't see that ever happening. Bunch of wankers.

MartinJD · 30/07/2017 14:24

horse racing is odd. Seems like it's having a real renaissance amongst working class and lower middle class people at the moment. They dress and often over compensate up due to status anxiety.

Unfortunately as soon as the booze start flowing and people inhibitions drop we tend to revert to type. Which usually results in pissing fighting and puking.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 30/07/2017 14:27

Weddings, football, birthday parties, Stag and Hens, clubbing, any excuse, no difference really. We have become a nation of drunken idiots it seems.

TeaCake5 · 30/07/2017 17:06

martin agree

Brings out some snobby veiws too in my opinion. I actually used to work at the races, in the VIP and corporate boxes as a waitress. I can tell you if someone wants to get ineibriated then 'class' (although most of the time class has nothing to do with money) has nothing to do with it. You might not see the pictures from these areas though.

orlantina · 30/07/2017 19:23

People like their alcohol, don't they.

Our city has race days and lots of hen and stag dos. You can spot the drunks everywhere.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 30/07/2017 19:26

I've seen this even at newton abbott race course. You have to avoid the trains on that day they are packed with braying drunk people who stink of alcohol it's rank

Hunted68 · 30/07/2017 19:29

Ladies day at Newcastle is hideous. The time I went there certainly weren't many ladies! Races at popular events are a nightmare for anyone who doesn't want to join in getting hammered. York, Chester, Aintree, Ascot, Epsom all spring to mind for their big events.

Hunted68 · 30/07/2017 19:30

Orlantina- British people certainly do

Figgygal · 30/07/2017 19:32

I went to Cheltenham this year you could either drink or watch the races there was no way to do both where we were as glasses were not allowed anywhere near the concourse. I've no clue how people go and get bladdered

Awks · 30/07/2017 19:32

We call the trains back to Scarborough from York on race days Vomit Comets. They can be hideous.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 30/07/2017 19:34

I'm near Ascot and I completely agree with you OP. Plus ladies day is definitely the worst. People do just use it as an excuse to get completely wrecked.

alldaysleeper · 30/07/2017 20:12

I don't think class comes into it, I think it's a group thing, I've seen plenty of professional, well educated people turn into leering aggressive thugs, men and women, as soon as alcohol in large quantities is in the mix
