"Baby has never had sugar"

itsascottishbaby · 29/07/2017 21:49

Was chatting to friends today, we all have nearly 1 year olds. One said "My DD has never had sugar", and the others all chimed in to say the same.

My DS has had quite a bit of sugar - only tiny bits like a tiny morsel off a croissant, a baby biscuit or a taste of cake.

AIBU to think they might be stretching the truth? Or am I the odd one out, and a bad parent to boot?

Well, their kids definitely have. Lots of foods have sugar in (fruit, bread, baked beans...). Don't sweat it.

HerRoyalNotness · 29/07/2017 21:50

Most likely, unless they don't feed their babies anything processed at all.

KindergartenKop · 29/07/2017 21:50

So their kid has never had a banana or a slice of bread?

Aliveinwanderland · 29/07/2017 21:50

I would find it hard to believe that they have never had sugar- especially as that would mean no fruit!

My 9 month old loves the occasional rich tea biscuit and a croissant!

SkintAsASkintThing · 29/07/2017 21:51

Well if any of them have had fruit, they've had sugar.

I really wouldn't overthink this op, everything in moderation, in 20 years no-one will care or know who ate what and when so long as the general diet is good, it's fine.

BamburyFuriou3 · 29/07/2017 21:52

Milk is very sweet and has sugars in. Fruit is loaded with sugars etc. Meh Grin

TractorTedTed · 29/07/2017 21:52

Well they may well be telling the truth, but it doesn't make you a bad parent.

I was a bit obsessive about making sure pfb didn't have sugar. First taste was a piece of his first birthday cake.

Second child has had much more and from a much younger age.

Guess which child is the better eater? (and isn't as fixated with sugar!)

oooopnorth · 29/07/2017 21:52

Load of bollocks.

CustardLover · 29/07/2017 21:52

Well, my PFB didn't have anything with refined or added sugar until he was gone two so it's definitely possible and lots of my friends were the same with our first. He did have a load of fruit though and obviously that's got loads of natural sugar. My poor old disregarded DS2 however has pretty much been snorting it since birth. They're both fine. I wouldn't worry about it. People do things differently and that's totally ok.

itsascottishbaby · 29/07/2017 21:53

Thank you. Presumably they mean refined sugar as I've seen them all eat fruit. But then I've also seen them eat Kiddilicious baby biscuits, that's why I'm confused.

GoodBadOrIndifferent · 29/07/2017 21:53

Well, clearly that's not true. Baby milk whether breast or bottle contains sugar.
DS main source of sugar is fruit, I dont think he needs regular cake or biscuits, though he has them occasionally.
I'm trying to avoid him getting too much of a taste for it.

IDontBowlOnShabbos · 29/07/2017 21:53

There's sugar in milk (lactose) so their kids have definitely had it.

Figgygal · 29/07/2017 21:53

Meh people are twats!!
I don't feed my 9 month old chocolate biscuits yet but god he will inhale a yoghurt.

itsascottishbaby · 29/07/2017 21:54

Yes to the yoghurts!!

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 29/07/2017 21:54

Should've fed your baby sugar cubes whilst staring dead-eyed at them.

What do these people want, a round of applause?

Who sits about chatting about this shit? Hang out with someone less boring people.

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 29/07/2017 21:55

I think they meant processed sugar?
Human milk has more sugar (lactose) than cow's milk.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 29/07/2017 21:55

Haha. I would have had to remind them about the baby biscuits. Or say 'I never give mine sugar either' whilst handing them a bag of chocolate buttons.

mokaerisifhija · 29/07/2017 21:55

Yeah they will be thinking that something that contains "only natural fruit sweeteners" ie fructose is in some way better than something that contains sucrose. It is not any different - both get broken down into glucose.

There are too many people into competitive parenting. Ignore them.

specialsubject · 29/07/2017 21:56

"Mummy didn't listen at school".

Paltrow science. Dipsticks.

Rollonbedtime7pm · 29/07/2017 21:56

My 15 month old DD ate a drumstick lolly today - I literally do not care!

She is number 3 Grin (who does also eat lots of veg and healthy food too!)

Crispmonster1 · 29/07/2017 21:57

Perhaps they are confusing sugar with refined sugars. Anything carb is sugar!! They just sound a bit ill informed so don't beat yourself up.

IndianaMoleWoman · 29/07/2017 21:59

My DD was given sugar water in NICU at a few days old. Sugar is a natural painkiller in very small babies, apparently, so each time they had to do a cannula or injection they gave her sugar water.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/07/2017 22:00

Take no bloody notice.

According to bullshit I heard when dd was little.
I must have had the only baby that ever cried. Ever woke up in the night.
Ever threw a tantrum
Was not going to be put up a year above, because She was a genius
Who didn't prefer vegetables to chocolate.
I could go on

BlurryFace · 29/07/2017 22:00

They're daft buggers who don't understand all the things sugar is in - like the hippy dippies banging on about not using "anything with chemicals in it". They're thinking sugar = fruit shoot, biscuits and sweets when sugar also = fruit, bread, tomato pasta sauce, baked beans etc.

SolomanDaisy · 29/07/2017 22:00

I was so careful with my first. Caught him giving the baby a bit of chocolate waffle yesterday.
