AIBU to quit with no notice?

Bit long, sorry!

I picked up a part-time hospitality job a few months ago, 25 hours a week. I hate it. It's terrible, the work is boring, the girls there all make snide comments about me and it makes me incredibly stressed. I know it's a shit job because people keep quitting after a week or so, but I needed the money at the time. There have been several occasions where I have been tricked or lied to, to get me to work a shift.

At present, I've just finished a shift. They write up the rota for the next week every Sat. I started a new job last week before quitting this one (dumb I know, they wanted me to start asap), so I don't need the money from this one anymore. I've now been working 10 full days straight (a combo of both jobs), so I really didn't want to work tomorrow. Well guess who's been put on for a full day tomorrow, despite my requesting that I'd like that day off. I also suspect she's lying to me about why I have to do this shift as well (two of the girls don't like each other + she lied about the same thing before). I'm so hacked off.

Problem is, yet another person quit today. So now they have a dire amount of staff. If I don't go in tomorrow, they might not even be able to open. BUT - and this may be my saving grace - I never signed a contract. So I don't think they have any legal standing.

AIBU to just send my manager a text right now and say I quit? Would you do it?

We have to give four weeks (?) Notice I believe, we had a lady last year who waited till the day before payday, didn't show up on payday and we never saw/heard from her again 😂 go for it! You're not tied down and you've got a new job, if theyou treat you like crap then fuck them! Grin

Don't know if I can swear on here but don't know how to edit, oops, sorry if I can't!

You should have just quit and not said you were ringing in sick. I agree with a previous poster who says it devalues genuine sick leave. While you may never intend to work in the industry again, I believe strongly in exiting on good terms as you never know when your path will cross with a former employer or supervisor. Exiting on good terms would have meant sending a courteous email to supervisor and HR stating the you are resigning with immediate effect due to the late rostering and that this is not compatible with your availability at this time, but you are grateful for the experience, opportunity, and blah.

It is not acceptable for them to give you your roster at 24 hours notice; I suspect that is a function of the business having a high quit rate and juggling bodies to slot into gaps. This is unsuited to many people. Hospitality is notorious for poor conditions for staff, given the fluctuating demands. That said, I have many staff for whom zero hours contracts and part time contracts work well (students, parents, people with partners who work shifts, as they can accept/decline work when it suits their situations).

Clearly you are unhappy and are right to leave, but I don't know why you didn't just give notice when you started the other job. You might have been better off doing so - again, in a courteous email, and saying (if needing the money was the reason), that you would like to remain on their books for casual work if that were mutually suitable. But you have burnt that bridge now.

Best of luck in the new role.

I wouldn't mind burning bridges with an employer who thinks it reasonable to demand sick notes if you are off sick one day at the weekend. Only a private GP would give one at such short notice and the charge would be high. No doubt OP who is probably on a low wage would be expected to pay.

You don't work for greggs do you? 😂 I used to work there and this sounds very similar, not long before I left as I was pregnant and having a few problems so had been told that I could only do light shifts they sent me to an extremely busy store where it would have only been me and one other member of staff, long story short I basically got sent to hospital half way through the shift and due to not having enough members of staff they had to shut the store, that did not go down well and got some very shitty messages and bitched about to my other colleagues in front of my face. I went on maternity leave and never went back 😂
