to expect a new hob to stand up to normal wear and tear? (Boring, I know, but would like your opinions)

Got a new glass hob from John Lewis a couple of months ago.
Was cooking, knocked a bottle of wine over (not drunk, BTW ), and this cracked the hob. It was not dropped onto the hob, just fell over onto it from the worktop at the side.
John Lewis are saying this is accidental damage and I should claim on insurance. I say that a hob should not break so easily - if it cannot stand up to minor accidents then surely it is not fit for purpose.
Who is right?

Thats definitely not right.. mine has survived a fire.. dd1 put all the rings on and nicely poured oil in the hob she was 3 at the time and had undiagnosed ASD....
I would definitely be asking for some kind of recompense, certainly a replacement.

Definitely not unreasonable, phone em back and tell them that under trading standards it has to be 'fit for purpose'. If it's going to crack after you tip a wine bottle on it, then it would do so if you put a pan down on it too fast. Not fit for purpose!!

Thanks. They have already told me over the phone that they think it is accidental damage, so they are not going to accept responsibility. I can feel a letter coming on...

Was going to say same as rantinghousewife. Imagine the damage one of those heavy le creuset (sp) things would do. Any kind of saucepan etc could crack it.

More importantly though... did you manage to salvage any of the wine or was it all spilt?

If you still get no joy, try phoning Citizens Advice, they can let you know where you stand legally. You could try seeing if Trading Standards have a website too.

Wine bottle was fine - just the hob that was knackered! Still, had to drink all the wine to console myself .

it sounds like a fault to me

now did you pay for it?

if a credit card ask your cc company to deal with it as they are jointly liable with jl
