I used to work in a hotels that were in the ROI but it was just on the border so we often had weddings from NI. They always brought their own drink. The drink prices at the hotel were normal, but understandably more than what they would be used to spending, but I don't think it made a difference. You'd always find empty vodka bottles in the loo and you could tell the ones who only ordered red bull, no one drinks that on its own. Sometimes people got kicked out for it or there would be a scene, which no one wants at a wedding.
I always thought it was a pretty tacky thing to do.
Although now I've been to a few weddings in NE England that charge Dublin prices I'm starting to reconsider...

emilybrontescorset · 30/07/2017 15:57

I know lots of people who do this.
I've done it at a very expensive wedding venue, we had booze in the car, bought some drinks then Went out to the car to top up our glasses.
I do begrudge paying extortionate amounts for very average wine.

TestTubeTeen · 30/07/2017 16:41

Yeahbut, yeahbut, sipping wine from a pouch stuffed down your bra sounds like something from The Royle Family or Shameless.

Sorry, I daresay I am being prissy but I can't get my head around getting all dressed up, beimg someone's guest and then slurping up smuggled drink out of my underwear, risking being ejected by security....

How much of this overpriced booze do you need to sink? In addition to the toast champagne and the (usually) free bottles on tne table at dinner?

DW1973 · 30/07/2017 17:21

Iv taken my own in before as i was on a very tight budget, take an empties home as if theyr found on floor/bins the deposit would be kept...and be discreet!

AJGiveMeSomeSpeed · 30/07/2017 17:27

We haven't ever had to smuggle alcohol in so I have no tips. However our wedding was ridiculous for the price of alcohol and so to our parents, photographers (my brother and sil), maid of honour, readers, groomsmen, best man, and wedding planner (our bridesmaids were children) we gave a couple of bottles of nice wine, case of beer or bottle of fizz as gifts. That way it was their choice to drink them and the venue couldn't charge us because they were gifts and not us bringing our own.

FairfaxAikman · 30/07/2017 17:35

I'm a whisky drinker and I buy a bottle of spring water and ask them not to pour it. That way it lasts me all night.
I pour the malt from a hip flask either in the loos or under the table and add a splash of water

Peachyteach · 30/07/2017 17:36

Hell yeah!

When things are tight needs must!
You can get those bags of wine now that come in boxes.
Unfortunately you'd need a big bag and deffo do it in the toilets! X

2babas2cats · 30/07/2017 17:46

My brothers wedding the other week, we stayed overnight and packed wine in the case. To be fair, I bought one and went to the room to freshen up and poured a top up but the rest of the bottle ended up coming home with me the next day. If you can be discrete go for it!

NurseButtercup · 30/07/2017 18:04

Haven't read the full thread but here's a smuggling device:

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 30/07/2017 18:14

If it's somewhere you aren't likely to be searched I often sneak a bottle of vodka in my handbag to things, I just decant it into a water bottle and top my glass up in the loo. I reckon it's because I don't act like I'm trying to hide anything no one questions it.

If it's somewhere they check I go with drinks pouches in my bra (depending on how big your boobs are and how low cut your dress is you can sneak a fair amount in this way, just make sure the lid is between your boobs or it can slip and show) or festivals/anywhere you're staying overnight you can get a couple of pouches in a wet wipe box wrapped in a wet wipe wrapper, then just put a packet with a few wet wipes in on top, they never check the second pack actually has wetwipes in it. Suncream bottles, hand sanitiser and body mist/spray bottles work well, just be sure to really rinse them out first.

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 30/07/2017 18:18

I should add, if you go with pouches in your bra, be sure to alternate which one you are topping up from or you end up with lopsided boobs.

Could be useful if you're taken short!

bonbonours · 30/07/2017 18:24

Personally I wouldn't book a wedding venue that charge extortionate prices for drinks. For my wedding we used a venue where we could do our own drinks, went to France and stocked up, paid a couple of 18 year olds to be bar staff, charged £1 per drink. Job done.
Wine with dinner is usually free right? In that case I would hide a couple of bottles of dinner wine (they would bring more if it was finished?) to drink later. I hate paying for overpriced drinks anywhere (one of the reasons I rarely even go to pubs) so I would definitely smuggle drink into a wedding if it was going to cost me a fortune.

manicmij · 30/07/2017 18:27

Just wonder how much alcohol needs to be consumed to enjoy a wedding or a night out. No wonder UK has such a problem caused by alcohol never mind police and NHS. For goodness sake it's a wedding not a binge night in.

Toysintheattic29 · 30/07/2017 18:27

It depends on the wedding. I went to an evening reception recently which was awful. Not one drink was complimentary and yes, the price of a glass of wine was sky high. I definitely would have taken a bottle of something in with me if I'd known.

MsHarry · 30/07/2017 18:27

Yes, multiple times. Best time was when a friend stayed over at the hotel with me. We kept ordering cokes and then going up in the lift to our room to top up with Castaway(Aldi Malibu!!!!) those were good times!

Yummymummy159 · 30/07/2017 18:28

Cut a hole in the zip up pocket in the inside of your bag - hide bottles in there so if bags are checked nothing to be seen. The resealable Capri suns (refilled with booze) work best as they don't klink together like glass and don't really have a shape like a little coke bottle Wink

MsHarry · 30/07/2017 18:28

Oh yummy that's a whole new level. I like it!

elevenclips · 30/07/2017 18:33

Wouldn't you just put vodka and lemonade in an Evian bottle? Or other clear and colourless spirit?

Pomermaniac · 30/07/2017 18:34

I smuggled wine into a dry dinner in a metal water bottle - looks like your drinking pee if you use a transparent one.

MadMags · 30/07/2017 18:37

There's no justification for the prices charged by some hotels. It's extortionate, even considering their overheads.

If they have no scruples when it comes to ripping off a fairly captive audience, then the audience should have no scruples in refusing to buy their overpriced drinks!

backmadeofglass · 30/07/2017 18:42

I'm a nurse and at my wedding, the girls from work were wearing catheter bags round their thighs filled with various tipple as I had pre warned them that the venue had a zero tolerance policy to people bringing their own alcolohol and that me and DH would be given a hefty fine.Blush

worridmum · 30/07/2017 18:43

At my wedding reception they gave the option to the guest to hand over the booze or be ejected and the bride and groom being charged a mark up of the booze eg find a wine bottle you get charged full whack for a wine bottle.

Or at the place i worked during univerity it was a stright up £80 put onto the invoice the bride and groom had to pay per none sold bottle found (they signed the contract so was legally enforceable incase people say they would refuse to pay the penilty )
