To write my name in my books?

I can't make my mind up on this one.

Should you or shouldn't you write your name in your books?

I'm not talking paperback fiction that gets passed around friends and family. I mean, reference, hard back non fiction. Usually expensive books. Even old books?

There is something quite nice of seeing your grandfathers name etc in books passed down.

I write my name in mine, means that any that you lend out have a good chance of being returned

Yoksha · 28/07/2017 17:30

I write my name & date of purchase. Always have.

AnUnhappyStudent · 28/07/2017 17:31

I write my name and phone number in case I leave them at uni by accident

LemonRedwood · 28/07/2017 17:32

I do. I have books that have my dad's name written in them and they're quite precious to me now because of that (I may be overly sentimental!).

notomatoes · 28/07/2017 17:33

I love buying second hand books when they have a name or message in the front. Gives them a bit of back story.

Andrewofgg · 28/07/2017 17:35

I once bought (by post) a second-hand copy of a book I had had new decades earlier and got my own copy back!

Fifthtimelucky · 28/07/2017 18:08

How lovely! I always write my name in too.

And I agree about the sentimental value. I have a book which was given to my mother by her father on her 14th birthday. He wrote the location in too, from which I can see that it was while she was evacuated. He died in the 1970s and seeing his writing brings back many happy memories.

I don't normally but think I will now!

I'd never sell a book, only give it away, so cannot see an issue.

runningtogetskinny · 28/07/2017 18:11

I always used to, when I divorced my first husband it was one less thing to argue over Grin

Crumbs1 · 28/07/2017 18:11

Bookplates. It's quite nice to see the provenance of pre owned books.

Mouthfulofquiz · 28/07/2017 18:18

I bought a gardening book from eBay and it not only had a bookplate but a front sheet of a newspaper from when it was bought. It was amazing!

Nikephorus · 28/07/2017 21:10

I'm fairly sure that there isn't a rule on this and therefore you can write it in if you want and not if you don't.

TheScottishPlay · 28/07/2017 21:13

I always write in mine. Name, date and why and where I purchased/was given it.
Usually write a wee message in books give to DH, DS and friends and their DC.

PlymouthMaid1 · 28/07/2017 21:13

I like seeing a name in an old book.

PocketNiffler · 28/07/2017 21:27

I inherited all my great aunt's Anne of green gables books. She'd written her name in so I did too (I loved them soooo much). My mum went mad but I think the next person to get them will be glad I did.
