To want DH to take a trip to the GP?

It's his wind... It's getting beyond ridiculous.

I know some people react differently to types of food and therefore fart more, but he literally gets so gassy with anything and everything. Even when he hasn't eaten in hours.

It's not just that, the stench is unbearable. I'm not trying to say no one else smells at time, but this really is something else.

It's also a timing thing - In one hour, he will pass wind at least three times.

It just never stops and I can't just sit and watch something with him/walk down the road with him without it happening.

AIBU to say he needs to see a GP? It doesn't seem normal to me. He seems to pass stools normally, every day etc. Nothing unusual there. It's just the farting.

He thinks it's completely normal Angry

Sounds like IBS to me. I'm a walking windbag

ALLthedinosaurs · 28/07/2017 13:26

Sounds like he needs a course of probiotics. DH started doing this and I persuaded him to go on actimel/yakult for a bit. It really helped. as did sleeping with the febreze next to the bed

luckylucky24 · 28/07/2017 13:27

How is Fabreeze going to help?

It doesn't sound normal to me. I would tell him to go see and GP or request that he goes to the toilet EVERY time he needs to fart in order to contain the smell. He will soon make the decision to do something about it.

ALLthedinosaurs · 28/07/2017 13:35

Febreze helped eliminate the humour aspect. I don't know why some people think farts are so bloody funny but they soon stop when they are being chased to the bathroom drenched in febreze.

Don't judge me. I was at breaking point. Febreze and probiotics together = no more farts.

Perhaps see the GP if probiotics don't work.

TheNaze73 · 28/07/2017 13:39

I would be annoyed if somebody was trying to make me see a doctor, if I felt it was unwarranted.

For what it's worth, I agree that he needs to however, he's got to want to go.

How long has he had the rectal turbulence for?

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 28/07/2017 13:42

Fodmap! It's an elimination diet which you do for 6-8 weeks then gradually reintroduce stuff.
I was avoiding onion prior to this as I figured out on my own it makes me poorly, but since doing fodmap I'm so much less bloated and feel a million times better!

ALLthedinosaurs · 28/07/2017 13:48

Oh good lord. He does NOT need to see a GP yet. It is wind. It is not a medical problem until you have tried and failed to deal with it yourself the sensible way - diet and probiotics. Thats up to him.

Brahms3rdracket · 28/07/2017 13:56

My dp farts an unbelievable amount, but it seems to be his hobby. He is particularly amused when doing it in the supermarket, especially when it provokes tutts. Doesn't bother me much any more as it's generally odourless and I no longer go food shopping with him.

2rebecca · 28/07/2017 14:37

What exactly is the GP expected to do about smelly farts and lots of farting particularly if he's always been like that? It doesn't sound like an illness

eubyru · 28/07/2017 14:45

My dp is like this and he had a milk intolerance but still drinks the stuff so I've to stick his bum wind all day long

Moanyoldcow · 28/07/2017 14:53

My DH was like this. We happened to go on a low carb diet and it stopped rather dramatically. When we went back to bread it started again with a vengeance. He avoids bread now and it's sorted.

I'd suggest a food and fart diary to see if anything affects it more.

321zerobaby · 28/07/2017 15:01

Agree a lowfodmap diet is the way to go, but he may be more receptive to following it if the doctor suggests it to him.

BuzzKillington · 28/07/2017 15:08

I would suggest he reviews his diet, or the way he eats.

My ds has a (revolting) friend who just wolfs his food down and then proceeds to burp and fart a LOT.

I wonder if it's because of the way he eats.

BertrandRussell · 28/07/2017 15:11

It's just bad manners. I bet he doesn't fart at work. Or if he's in a meeting with his boss.

Straycatblue · 28/07/2017 15:21

For all those saying its not an illness, whilst on the one hand , it can be caused by simple things such as ingesting too much air when eating, it can actually be a symptom of several illnesses ranging from IBS, lactose intolerance, coeliac disease.

Food diary will help you both to see if there is any pattern, there are lots of over the counter treatments you could try first before seeing gp but seeing a gp is not unreasonable.

When its as severe as what you describe, It can have a huge impact on peoples lives, my friend has this problem, she cant control it (ie its nothing to do with manners) and unlike your husband was aware how awful it was for those around her , she was even ostracised from one of the local creative groups she attended and it had a huge detrimental effect on her marriage.

Lots of online advise available although I suspect the biggest problem will be getting your husband to be aware of how large an effect on your marriage it is having.

blankface · 28/07/2017 15:23

Try him for a week on low carbs (no bread, rice, pasta, pastry etc) and curtail his sugar too.

I did that for the family as part of a healthier eating thing, then realised everyone had just about stopped farting.

if that doesn't work, get him to take good gut bacteria in fermented foods like live yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir.

blankface · 28/07/2017 15:25

Sorry Moany, hadn't seen your post.
Glad we agree, low carb has an amazing side-effect for us GrinHalo

HipsterHunter · 28/07/2017 15:26

I'm lactose intolerant and if I eat dairy the most hideous foul smelling rancid smells seep out of my bum, its awful, I can't 'hold them in' like I can with normal farts!

PugOnToast · 28/07/2017 15:59

My kid had this a couple of years ago. It turned out he had picked up some bacteria/parasite - can't remember. He didn't have any other symptoms like diarrhoea or pain but needed a serious course of anti biotics.

Cleared up after that.

It is really anti social and people think it is funny and should be put up with but it isn't fair. If my arm smelt like shit all the time people would tell me to go to the gp. Why is it ok for offensive farts? It is a sign of poor digestive health.

PugOnToast · 28/07/2017 16:02

Agree low carb may help. My DH did one and it identified that his IBS and chronic horrendous indigestion was caused by yeast intolerance. He was really ill with it.

YoullShootYourEyeOut · 28/07/2017 16:09

What about getting g him some Windeze? They work wonders (I get gas with my ibs sometimes and it can be really uncomfortable) and fairly quickly for me. :)

CockacidalManiac · 28/07/2017 16:10

If it's been like this all his life, might be worth charcoal tablets and antacids. If this is new, it'd be advisable for him to see his GP (like with any change in bowel habits).

CockacidalManiac · 28/07/2017 16:11

Plus it's never a good idea to just assume IBS.

Notknownatthisaddress · 28/07/2017 16:16

It HAS to be something in what he eats. Several people I worked with a few years ago ate shit ALL the time. Tons of carbs and fat; chips, fried fish, kebabs, pot noodles, pasties you name it! They were chubby and sweaty and cracked off foul farts all the time.

In the end they got a warning from HR. You CAN control your foul gas, no matter what anyone says. It's down to what you eat.

He doesn't need to see a doc (yet.)

I think farting is fairly normal, but if I had a man who kept doing it, like 50-70 times a day or more, and it stunk bad, it would be a dealbreaker if he didn't sort it out.
