To hate the holiday cottage clean up

ClusterBustering · 28/07/2017 07:03

Every year we go away with extended family to a holiday cottage and every year I dread the last day and thank go we normally stick to camping! It's more effort meeting the rules than it is re-packing a whole tent etc.

Obviously I'd leave a place tidy, wash up and tidy spills etc... but it fills more I end the holiday with spring cleaning someone else's house. Striping beds as the kids mither, floors to clean, bathrooms to go over and alll sorts of rules they add to. AND they are so expensive I'm sure paying a cleaner to go over a tidy house without any significant mess must be well into the price.

It's always a crap end to the holiday going over a list, despite making an effort to keep it tidy through the stay. All before 10am

Can you hire a local cleaner to do it for you?

HamletsSister · 28/07/2017 07:15

We have owned cottages for years and NEVER expect this of guests. A cleaner has been paid to do that. Dishes away, rubbish out - even beds stripped - is enough. No floors or cleaning.

Relax!

Creampastry · 28/07/2017 07:19

Choose s place that does this for you.

Yabu for liking camping!!!

DearTeddyRobinson · 28/07/2017 07:22

Wtf?? First of all, why is it you doing all that? Are all the other adults disabled?
Second of all, I've stayed in loads of holiday cottages and have NEVER been asked to do anything like that. Leave the place tidy, no dirty dishes etc, fine. But washing the floors? Fuck that. OP I honestly wouldn't do it. Let the bloody owners pay for a cleaner!

Why can't the others do it?

Gizlotsmum · 28/07/2017 07:24

Same here. Beds stripped, floors hoovered or brushed, bins emptied, check nothing left behind, bathroom rinsed over. Dishes put away. Never had a deposit not returned.

Winterview · 28/07/2017 07:30

I never clean, isn't cleaning usually included in the price? I leave it tidy (wash up, wipe kitchen surfaces, towels in the bath) but don't strip beds or clean floors or bathroom! I'm not going to spend the last day of a holiday doing housework before the professional cleaners arrive!

MrMessy · 28/07/2017 07:32

Is it in the uk? I have never had to do this here, but we had to do it in France once. I think it is quite common there.

NotAnotheChinHair · 28/07/2017 07:34

End of stay cleaning should be included in the price. It's meant to be a holiday!

PoppyPopcorn · 28/07/2017 07:37

Agree with others - we chuck towels in the bath, make sure the dishwasher is empty, leave the place in a reasonable condition. But I don't mop floors or clean.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/07/2017 07:40

I strip the beds and put them with the towels in the bath, make sure the loo is clean and that's it. Stayed in LOADS of cottages. Deposits are for damage and breakages but tbh they factor that in as well as normal wear and year ime.

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 28/07/2017 07:40

The only place we used to do all that was when we used to use a friends cabin, there was no cleaner, and the place was only used by his family, and once a year us. But we didn't have a time limit, sometimes we left at 4 in the afternoon so no rush.

Trufflethewuffle · 28/07/2017 07:40

As a holiday let owner, I definitely prefer it if you just stick to loading the dishwasher and a general tidy. If you have moved the furniture around please put it back where it was, at least into the same room.

Don't bother stripping the beds, it's easier to see where people have picked their zits and bled onto the pillowcases if they are still on the bed. We already have the mountain of towels to sort through to check for those guests who use the "have crap, get in shower, moisten arse and wipe off on towel" technique of personal cleanliness.

We still need to clean surfaces and mop floors anyway so please don't bother. I expect to do a full clean at each changeover.

Foxsox · 28/07/2017 07:42

Fuck that!!

We are back from a cottage holiday, we kept it tidy, put dishes away & put the bins out and that's all.
The cleaning, bed stripping and floor washing is down to whoever comes in at 10am as we leave (before the next family arrive at 4pm)

TBH I wouldn't want to stay there if it was given a quick once over by the previous family and hadn't been cleaned by someone employed to do it.

Find a different one for next time

YANBU re cleaning

YABU re camping (bleurgh)

Loopytiles · 28/07/2017 07:43

Are they actually requiring this? If so pick another cottage!

And yes, others need to pull their weight.

Totally disagree with you on camping though. It's a million times more work IME.

ClashCityRocker · 28/07/2017 07:43

I empty the dishwasher, wash up any last minute dishes and put away, put the rubbish out and wipe down kitchen surfaces and any visible mess.

Certainly don't strip beds or wash floors! Might spend five minutes with a dustpan and brush if necessary. Never not had a deposit returned.

Is this something you have to do?

ClusterBustering · 28/07/2017 07:45

Re other adults: sisters both yes disabled (possible bit massively time consuming to help), parent paid so like to do it as the thank you, dh does the herding of 3 small children as being practical it's easier for us this way round.

It's ridiculous this one my family have found! The rules (and despising!) are high.

OP posts:
ClusterBustering · 28/07/2017 07:46

I must say, I've never rented myself so I don't know the norm! Glad to hear others might be ok.

There is a bottle of flash in each bathroom left out for cleaning :-S

OP posts:
ClusterBustering · 28/07/2017 07:49

The previous cottage round here though one year I tidied well, then on the way out accidentally dropped sand out of a bag. Small pile, place spotless otherwise, left it as so small if cleaning anyway and I'd already packed all brooms etc away... got kept half the deposit claiming it was such a state he had to pay the cleaner overtime! (I've worked as a cleaner, I know what clean looks like).

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/07/2017 07:50

Yeah the Flash will be there for the cleaners or any spills during the week not for you to use to do a big clean!

do the basics mentioned above. you'll find either a) they don't mind which saves you from doing it next year or b) they won't rent to you next year which saves you from doing it again and which will allow you to rent somewhere more sensible. hth 😁

steppemum · 28/07/2017 07:54

we used to let holiday homes. Our requirements were simple:

  1. return everything to its starting place (you'd be amazed at how many people move furniture!)
  2. take all rubbish out
  3. strip beds
  4. put all dirty dishes in dishwasher and turn on

No cleaning, no sweeping, no dusting, none of that.

Some people are saying don't strip the beds, we did ask for this, and I suppose that just varies from place to place.

We always left cleaning stuff out for use, because if you have a major spillage, mud all over the bath or something not within nirmal range, etc then you can clean up after yourself easily. We did not expect people to clean the place before they left

ClusterBustering · 28/07/2017 07:55

It is there for the job, there is a list detailing what to do!

I need to take charge of the rental choice don't I...
