Says a government advisor on equal pay and chairman of GSK in reference to the BBC star pay gap.

AIBU to call BS on this coming from a man with many, many years' work experience who is chairing one of the world's biggest pharma companies? I'm in a fairly junior role and have both asked for multiple pay rises myself and been asked for pay rises by multiple women.

I'm sure I read somewhere that, in general, women undervalue themselves and men overvalue themselves - which probably explains why more men ask for pay rises. That coupled with the fact that women receive heaps more discrimination in the workplace which can knock a person's confidence into asking for a pay rise.

However, YANBU, I think to not have a single woman ask him is unlikely.

It's beside the point anyway if they don't ask for a rise - to close the ended pay gap we need to look at the cause rather than the effect. Let's empower more women to feel confident enough to ask for a rise!

I've always worked in places with structured pay scales.

I cannot completely believe it I'm afraid. My DD had her lunch taken by another child today but didn't want to make a fuss Angry
I have never asked for a payrise.
I have had them though...

Although this just popped up on my time line

While the BBC may be in hot water for the gender disparity highlighted in its recent salary report, there has been little said about the state of pay within the fashion industry. A new study, however, has shed some light on the situation - and women come out on top. Reportedly earning around 75% more than their male counterparts, women make up 9 of the top 10 highest earning models in British fashion.

Most of Glaxo's female employees are in India right? Many of them are guaranteed pay rises in line with inflation (10-20 percent), so possibly have no need to request anything.

I can imagine it. I get paid more than all the women who work at the same grade as me.

Because i negotiated a better and also negotiated 2 pay rises in a year. The last one vecause i recognised the work they asked me to do was something only i could do at the time.

The same female colleagues moan about their wage and scoff at any suggestion of negoitating a wage rise.

I dont think that pay rises shoild only come when you ask, comoanies should recognise peoples effort and worth to the business. But i am shocked tge amount of women who will not speak up.

One even holds it against me. She is aware i get paid more. Mainly because I dont moan about it, she has no clue what the figure is. She even kept saying 'you will be ok for money but not all of us are friends with bob'. Bob is our boss (not real name).

She only stopped when i pointed out that getting on with the boss had nothing to do with it (i am not even friends with him). That i negotiated my wage and if she wanted more, she should do the same. Rather than get shitty with people who have done just that.

FFS-- my post above should have been can completely believe it!
