To ask if it is worth buying a La Creuser casserole dish

They are very expensive; but I love cooking and would use it all the time! Does anyone else have one? Was it worth its cost? X

It is absolutely worth it!
My mum bought a set of Le Creuset pans in 1975. She passed them onto me when I bought my first flat and I still use them to cook in every single day!!

Acopyofacopy · 27/07/2017 11:35

Another fan of the Sainsbury's knock off version here. Love and use the oven dish, don't really use the pot that much as it is very heavy.

Elphame · 27/07/2017 11:36

Too heavy. I cracked a glass oven top by putting it down a bit too hard. I like my ceramic coated pans much better.

procrastinationsupremo · 27/07/2017 11:41

I second having a look in TK Maxx, they always have loads in the one near me (practically everyone I know has had one as a wedding present at some point 😳)

vxa2 · 27/07/2017 12:09

I got a set for my 21st Birthday. I wasn't at all impressed at the time but 25 years on I use them all the time and they are still going strong. They are fantastic on my induction job. Smile

Sammysquiz · 27/07/2017 12:10

I came on here to say Sainsbury's! They're really brilliant, often in the sale, and some lovely colours.

foodiefil · 27/07/2017 12:11

I have a few! I like the colours Blushit's worth it, I use mine loads. If you can afford it go for it

Wholivesinashoe · 27/07/2017 12:11

They weigh a tonne. Even without food in them so my mum can't manage them anymore so gave hers to me, and I struggle with getting them in and out of the oven.

Ijustwantaquietlife · 27/07/2017 12:12

Aren't they britial cast iron? I managed to crack my high end wood burner so think I'd break it in a week and they are massively overpriced these days

LadyPeterWimsey · 27/07/2017 12:14

I have a Sainsbury's cast iron casserole and a massive French Le Creuset-style casserole, bought very cheaply in a French hypermarket. They're both great, and so I can't really justify the extra for Le Creuset. Also, I cook in bulk and for large numbers of people, so would have to sell a child to afford the size I would need.

missiondecision · 27/07/2017 12:19

Brilliant things that clean very easily even if like me you manage the burn things. Sales, tk maxx and factory outlets are best. Very ££££££

TonicAndTonic · 27/07/2017 12:20

DP inherited one of the lidded casserole dishes and it's fab! Bloody heavy when full of casserole though. Not tried any of the imitations so can't say if the real deal is worth the extra ££. I'd probably buy a couple more in the future, though probably in a nicer colour than our current one I don't like orange

KinkyAfro · 27/07/2017 12:28

I've got 4 of the cast iron casseroles, they are brilliant, but very heavy especially when full. Still look brand new and I've had them 10 years

Holidaygirlsummer · 27/07/2017 12:30

I have a orange cast iron one from homesence (tkmaxx homewear shop) it was £3.00 .
I also had the oven dishes and a teapot for same price .The girl was reducing them as i walked past.
One of the best bargains iv ever had for the kitchen .

paradoxicalInterruption · 27/07/2017 12:31

I've got an M and S cast iron casserole - basically le Creuset but much cheaper. It's really good. I love the way they retain heat. But v heavy!

www.marksandspencer.com/cast-iron-shallow-casserole/p/p22499796?prevPage=plp mine is a nice colour.

No, they aren't worth it. Cast iron casseroles are EXCELLENT, as others have said, but you can get MUCH cheaper ones than Le Creuset which are just as good. I have one I bought from Tesco about 10 years ago for £15 and one I recently bought from Sainsburys in their January sale for about £20. They're brilliant.

Arealhumanbeing · 27/07/2017 12:39

I love mine (large oval casserole) and will buy more.

However the one I have now is a replacement. The last one cracked and I had to send it to Le Creuset for analysis.

They agreed to send another but said the old one had clearly been used at an extremely high temperature and had also been soaked in water for too long. Both true.

Apparently very high temperatures aren't necessary as the pot conducts heat so well. Not sure about the soaking but it was definitely wrong!

Look after it and you won't regret purchasing.

greendale17 · 27/07/2017 12:40

Buy it- it will last you a lifetime

I prefer Staub. My la Creuset enamel chipped in under a year and rusted around it and the oven proof plastic handle melted. No refund given as I was told I hadn't cared for it correctly, which I had. My Staub cocotte has been excellent however.

I have a Sainsbury's one. It's a pot.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 27/07/2017 12:48

I also have a sainsbury's knock-off
They're much, much cheaper to start off with, and often in the sale - mine was £12.50 IIRC.

36plusandtrying · 27/07/2017 12:50

Yes we have many ! Cost per use is amazing ! You will have them a lifetime, they are often on special from debenhams, john Lewis or house of Fraser (to make the purchase more bareable) we also have a Denby one - which is just as good tbh x
