To dye my hair?

I'm 7 months pregnant and so fed up. Starting to get to the uncomfortable stage and feel like I look a mess no matter how much effort I put in. I think a decent cut and colour would sort me right out but I heard ages ago that you shouldn't dye your hair during pregnancy - although I know many that have. Is this outdated advice or should I wait it out 3 months (or longer if it's frowned upon while breastfeeding) to be on the safe side?

Blimey I always had mine cut and dyed in a salon around 8 months pregnant to save me time and effort afterwards.

Your hair changes during pregnancy so the colour might not take the same as usual. Go and get it done if it makes you feel better.

Last pregnant 1999 though but she's a fairly normal kid. Loved dying her hair though Grin

I've heard this fluffyears but I'm not too worried about that - more the safety of it

One of my friends is training as a hair dresser one of our mutual friends asked her about this and she said it's only dangerous to bleach hair while pregnant.

Cric · 27/07/2017 08:45

I coloured my hair with both my babies. Spoke to the hairdresser and she said it was absolutely fine.

Cric · 27/07/2017 08:46

Agree with above poster. She also said not to bleach but that was never in questionSmile

You also should not dye your hair in the first trimester of pregnancy, because this is the time when the child's central brain is at a high level. A brain development expert, Nancy Slessenger, said in the first three months of pregnancy, the baby's brain produces ¼ million neurons per minute. Therefore, mothers should avoid dying their hair in the first trimester of pregnancy to avoid potential risk to the fetus.

I had it done at about 8 months and it was fine, and made me feel much better

MaidOfStars · 27/07/2017 08:52

That logic suggests we should do nothing while baby's brain is developing Hmm

dementedpixie · 27/07/2017 08:52

Nhs says it's fine. It also says some women may wish to avoid it in the first trimester but doesn't actually say is dangerous

I have to dye my hair every 5ish weeks due to awful greys. I researched a lot about it (well, I googled a lot!) as I really didn't want to go badger for pregnancy and the general gist was that it was fine so I went ahead as normal for both pregnancies and my kids are fine Smile

I agree with the pp who said if you don't dye your hair then that rules out an awful lot of other things as well!

Teamkhaleesi · 27/07/2017 09:15

Thanks for the replies - I think I'll go for it! For those that have dyed their hair during pregnancy did you notice a massive difference in how your hair took to the colour or did it go any frizzer than usual? Friends who have done it said they didn't notice a difference so maybe it's not that common

I also dye my hair every six weeks and did so throughout pregnancy.

Member652554 · 27/07/2017 09:20

I had a nice short cut and a funky colour 2 weeks before my due date . Glad I did as didn't have time when the little one was born and everyone commented on how nice it looked even during Labour . Gave the midwives sometimes to talk about too

Gothbaby · 27/07/2017 09:22

I cut down the amount of times i died my hair but you can still do it (preferably after the 1st trimester!) Id avoid bleaching it (because of fumes) but go for it!! It'll be my last lil treat before i give birth haha x

Elphame · 27/07/2017 09:23

Why don't you have highlights/lowlights put through with foils? That way the colour is kept off your scalp so the chances of anything entering your system is minimal.

lazycrazyhazy · 27/07/2017 09:30

My daughter looked into this (mousy blonde) and organic dye seemed to come out safer but she didn't do it in the end. It was winter so she really missed it. If you lighten you could put some lemon juice on and sit in the sun. If we ever see the sun again!

dementedpixie · 27/07/2017 10:19

One time my hair didn't take the colour very well so they had to dry it and then apply the dye again.
