To ask for advice on a new direction?

My husband is miserable in the call centre job he's had for years. There is no scope for progression and it's pretty dull work. He hasn't updated education since very good GCSE grades followed by not great A levels.
What can he retrain in relatively cheaply that there is good demand in? He's happy to study but not for a qualification that wont help.
Any advice would be great as he is very unhappy :(

What sort of areas is he interested in?
Would he eventually like to go to Uni in which case would he be interested in an Access Course or similar?
In the meantime he could find some college courses to study around his current job. This could be in literally any subject, lead to a qualification and won't break the bank. In the past just for pure interest and to keep up my skills I've done painting/decorating, languages - required to maintain my skill in a language I was trying to brush up for work.
He needs to do some proper ground research: what does what he want to do? What does it entail? What are his skills? Could he work around it whilst training, what is your local area like etc etc.
Your OP is unspecific and I'm sure neither of you want him to end up 4 years down the line having just drifted with no real sense of perspective or plan.

Didn't people used to say that plumbing was always very much in demand? I'd imagine getting a trade would be a good move given that post-Brexit there will be fewer economic migrants from elsewhere in Europe able to come and do that sort of work here, so more opportunities.

Sorry not to be specific, he has been in call centre work since leaving school nearly twenty years ago and now totally lost as what he wants to do. He doesn't want to go to uni but would to college/part time training.
I work in a professional but specific career so I'm a but useless outside of my area.
