I probably am but FFS - stop using my coffee mug for tea!

I'm not a mug minimalist, we have fair size collection of mugs acquired over the years, but in among that collection there are a few favourite or specific mugs. And I have a favourite morning coffee mug, it says coffee all over it in different types and sizes of writing, its the perfect size for coffee on wfh mornings and it tends to live at the front of the cupboard because it's a regularly used mug.

But I can't have it this morning because my DFiL has nabbed it - and put tea in it!

Just how unreasonable would I be to pour the tea over him while sobbing 'That's MY mug' like a toddler

Disclaimers (1) I am not actually going to do this. (2) I am nearly 37wks, so the average toddler may be more emotionally stable atm. (3) in every other way he is a lovely man & he and DMiL have done some fantastic toddler wrangling this weekend while DH was away which has been life saving

but its still my mug

Hide mug in different cupboard

bridgetreilly · 25/07/2017 11:22

AIBU to say that you are all bonkers?

CaptainHammer · 25/07/2017 11:28

Adding another comment to say I've found my people!
DH doesn't like hot drinks so can't understand why I have different mugs at different times of the day and for different hot drinks.
If he makes me one accidentally in the wrong mug I have to change it. I just can't enjoy it otherwise!

ShelaghTurner · 25/07/2017 11:33

All the mugs are mine, all 50 of them and to make sure DH knows this, I got a mug printed with his face on both sides and ‘DH’s mug’ printed on it. I think this is perfectly reasonable and makes for a happy household. Problem is, the bugger doesn’t take any notice... Angry

allegretto · 25/07/2017 11:36

Last week I would have said that you are all bonkers. This week I am staying with my mum - ALL the mugs are the wrong shape! Why didn't I bring my own...Shock

GreenTulips · 25/07/2017 11:40

Hello!! Finally people who understand!'

Mug party?

missm0use · 25/07/2017 11:50

Pour it over his head and then set him on fire!!! Who the hell puts tea in a coffee mug that belongs to a pregnant lady!!! Angry I'm 28 wks and would throat punch anyone using my mug!

Triskaidekaphilia · 25/07/2017 11:59

I used to have a rule at my last job. People could borrow my mug if they were having coffee but if there was any trace of tea in it they would feel my wrath! Grin Seems precious but on the odd occasion I've accidentally had tea or tea-tasting coffee (when people have made me one in what I assume was a poorly washed mug) I've felt nauseous for the rest of the day for some reason.

WashBasketsAreUs · 25/07/2017 12:41

I have 3 particular mugs that I like to take my nightime drink of tea to bed with. Trouble is, no one knows this and I get enraged when someone else uses one of them. To be fair I've never told anyone ( cos I thought I'd look odd) but perhaps not, judging by you lot!

NoCryingInEngineering · 25/07/2017 13:39

Oh yes, there is nothing worse than tea flavoured coffee!

I love this thread, I am not alone. We just moved and don't have much of a mug selection at the moment and I'm feeling rather uninspired by my morning coffee lately. I've been hunting for the right mug but I know by now that it's worth holding out for instead of just buying the first one that seems okay enough - that's one way to get a cupboard full of mugs!

PsychoPumpkin · 25/07/2017 13:48

I love this Grin

BiddyPop · 25/07/2017 14:03

I have 2 mugs that I particularly like, and as DH tended to nab them too often, I bought 4 more (different but also decent large mugs for tea) recently and threw out a collection of odd easter egg mugs and similar.

I also like my coffee in a china mug, and have a "World's Best Mum" mug for that - my DB bought it with DD when he was home from abroad for the scattering of DGran's ashes (and DH couldn't come as he was abroad for work - DB was being nice to his Big Sis!!). That is precious for the mug, and various emotional reasons (DB, DG, DD, all mixed up together!).

At work, no one uses my mugs. I have a "spare" emergency one, which will do in an emergency. My general spare is a big Christmas one which holds a decent cup of tea. But my regular one is a Bridgewater china one, which holds a "proper" cup of tea (probably nearly a pint in reality!) and feels right. It's even safe on the communal sink if I wash it and forget it as I chat to others - no one else dares take it! (It's quite distinctive, and thus well known as mine Grin )

Oh yes there is - coffee flavoured tea! It is disgusting.

BewareTheUndertoad · 25/07/2017 14:33

I used to have just one mug that I used all the time. Until 'someone' either dropped it in the sink or smashed it on the tap.

It was an old PG mug and made perfect tea. I found a replacement on Ebay but it was a different picture (same set) and not the same so I found something else I liked and sure enough he broke that as well. In the end I packed all my nice mugs away in boxes and bought cheap Ikea ones which actually make a good cup of tea, strangely since I have easy to replace ones, not one has been chipped or cracked or dropped.

However, I did have a special one for coffee and bedtime drinks which I specified was not to even be touched, not washed, dried, put away, put in the dishwasher, on the drainer, anything. It now has a chipped handle and I can't buy them any more. I keep it on the shelf labelled NO, along with some others that I am fond of that also have chips in.

There is also a shelf for mugs that fit in the car holder and which I don't use, they are his. And a couple for workmen, and a set I bought for us to use which cost too much so they sit on the shelf most of the time even though they fit in the car.

I was most upset once when we had company, a family gathering thing and I walked into the kitchen to find someone drinking from my Christmas mug (in April) which I used for my night-time drink.

I have recently sold a couple of unusual ones on Ebay, but ended up buying 2 more sets which will probably not get used.

Yesbutnobutmaybe · 25/07/2017 14:38

Oh I am so glad that I'm not the only one who has mugs for certain things! And it's always mine that get broken!! I got a special tall one, someone cracked it, got a replacement, cracked!!! I've moved onto having travel mugs, separate ones for tea and coffee of course!

paxillin · 25/07/2017 15:12

I had a housemate who out of my favourite wine glass for breakfast. No big deal? She put milk in and rigorously stirred cocoa powder in, leaving black scratchy spoon marks all over. She also made tea by chucking teabags into the boiling kettle.

Have a proper MY MUG tantrum.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/07/2017 15:32

Teabags into the kettle???!! What kind of heathenish nonsense is that? OMG. Shock
Not impressed with the glass damage either.
And Distinctly Not Impressed with the "accidentally-on-purpose" damaging of special mugs - how very bloody rude!!

DH did actually break the handle off my first HP Marauders' Map mug. I heard it go, and he pretended he had no idea what had happened. He hasn't touched it since though and he KNOWS not to touch the heat-reactive one. I worry that one day my MIL will put it in the dishwasher - she has also been told not to but she has a horrible habit of "just doing it to help" and the dishwasher would trash it completely. :(

vikingprincess81 · 25/07/2017 16:02

I've read the word 'mug' so much it's lost all meaning Grin
Did you whack him with the shovel then? These posters who ask for a advice then never take it... Grin

vikingprincess81 · 25/07/2017 16:05

My current work mug! I know I know, their work practices are awful and I don't buy from them now, but I can still use the vat mug can't I? Wink

I probably am but FFS - stop using my coffee mug for tea!
winglesspegasus · 25/07/2017 16:06

NoCryingInEngineering · 25/07/2017 16:42

Sorry viking I had to do work stuff.

And I didn't bat FiL over the head with a shovel, in case that meant MiL wouldn't come and toddler wrangle once the new baby arrives. I'm working on a range of mug protection measures for their next visit though.

susurration · 25/07/2017 17:01

Oh the horror! I have three mugs that are mine and I would be upset if anyone else touched them (other than being kind enough to wash them up for me, not opposed to that idea)

I think you should ask FiL to leave tbh.

gincredible · 25/07/2017 17:11

My favourite tea mug got broken 2 years ago. It was irreplaceable as it was 12 years old. Found an acceptable substitute by chance. My DD broke that shortly afterwards. My cups of tea are no longer the same and I search every shop in vain for the perfect mug to no avail Sad

maplepixie · 25/07/2017 17:15

There are certain rules about mugs. NEVER under any circumstances use anyone else. I fume when mine get used for other people haha
