Went to a chiropractor today. Never done anything like this before but I took up an offer in the local paper which offers X-rays and diagnosis at a good deal and having had a bad back for years thought I'd give it a try. I was expecting the "are you sure you're not pregnant?" question like they ask at the hospital before the X-ray but I wasn't xpecting the indepth written personal interrogation. When was your last period, when did you last have sex? Have you had sex since your last period? What contraception do you use? AIBU or is this necessary and usual with a bit of a stiff neck?! I am not sure I want to go back for the results now tbh Hmm

And underwear/ bra could contain metal?

Underwired knickers ? Niche

WellThisIsShit · 24/07/2017 22:46

I don't think it was necessarily meant to make someone feel sexually vulnerable (although who knows, there are some very vile people out there).

However, I do think there is something dodgy is going on.

It feels like someone is trying to portray themselves as 'medical' and has made up the trappings of medical type stuff but has gone over board on it... probably because they aren't as medically recognised as they are trying to portray themselves as.

So the X-ray questions are ramped up to sound more official and detailed. And the gown and no knickers is how hospitals used to be for many procedures years ago, but has been loosened up as unnecessary and not nice for the patients.

I'd question the qualifications of the person interpreting the X-ray, and what the outcomes are. I suspect it will be to sell you their treatments, and will be complicated, dire and use lots of pseudo- scientific vocabulary and concepts.

Generally you can tell a chancer by the way they over-egg everything. Proper medics are usually extremely cautious in their pronouncements.

rice Grin

Underwired knickers

I wonder what bits needs to be hoisted up by the underwiring? Front or back?

The mind boggleth...

Justaboy · 24/07/2017 22:49

This sounds well suspect!, is the x-ray being done at this charlatans or in a proper hospital?.

Brittbugs80 · 24/07/2017 22:50

I had an x-ray for possible slipped disc. I had to lower my jeans and remove my bra as it had underwiring. They asked if I was pregnant and date of last period and whether I could be pregnant. This was in A&E.

I also see a chiropractor and my underwear stays very much on. They ask if I'm pregnant, about the back pain etc and then start treatment. I've never had an x-ray by one though.

They sound a bit iffy. Have you been able to research them at all or their credentials?

Miserylovescompany2 · 24/07/2017 22:51

OP, that line of questioning doesn't sound right at all? The taking off of knickers is most definitely not necessary. I've had X-rays done on my pelvis and NEVER had to remove my underwear. I did have to remove my under-wired bra whilst having a chest X-ray for obvious reasons.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 24/07/2017 22:52

Trust your instincts op.

Redsippycup · 24/07/2017 22:53

Underwired pants Grin maybe as an alternative to padded pants Grin

Thinking about my chest xray in a&e i remember i pulled my bra out my sleeve, so obviously didn't need to take my tshirt off. (i remember because i then had to try to get the sodding thing back on again without flashing anyone!)

WankStainWasher · 24/07/2017 23:05

You couldn't pay me to go to a chiropractor, but that's beside the point....
YANBU - that was over the top.

justilou · 25/07/2017 04:28

Also, I live in Australia, so things may be different here, but a radiographer can alert a DOCTOR to things they can see on an X-Ray, but only a medically qualified doctor can diagnose anything. No way in hell would a chiropractor be allowed to diagnose anything from an X-ray. (They can however, look at an X-ray and doctor's report, and should before treating anyone!)

report to the police

Spam88 · 25/07/2017 05:19

This sounded dodgy straight away with the fact that they have a special offer including X-rays (how many chiropractors need to get struck off for unnecessary X-rays before they'll learn..?).

The sex questions do sound like they were to ascertain pregnancy status, but were totally over the top and not in line with current guidelines. Was it just your neck being x-rayed or your full spine? If it was just your neck then they don't even need to ask if you're pregnant. As for taking your knickers off...no idea.

BertrandRussell · 25/07/2017 05:27

The OP doesn't need to trust her instincts, ffs. She just had to look at the facts of what happened to her to know that this is seriously dodgy and should be reported. To the police, and to whatever so called professional body this quack claims to belong to.

Tainbri · 25/07/2017 08:59

I've emailed this morning and told them I'm not coming back and actually I now feel really relieved! Thanks for reassuring me I wasn't over reacting to how I felt the whole thing went. As for reporting them, I don't know if that would help but having thought about it more I think it is a lesson for me that if they were a professional outfit they wouldn't t need to hook in customers with "too good to be true" deals or offers in the first place! Angry

There is an anonymous online webform on CQC website called Share your knowledge. Please use this as in doing so you may be protecting others.

Tainbri · 25/07/2017 09:26

Oh ok Crumbs, thanks, I will have a look and thanks everyone for your support!

I've worked as a chiro assistant for quite a while and no, that's not normal. Clothes most certainly stay on and we are not interested at all in nitty gritty personal details. I wouldn't go back!
Just to add though, a chiro who does xrays prior to consultation and adjustment is typically the best kind as they aren't just "going in blind" so to speak.

wheredoesallthetimego · 25/07/2017 09:37

You've been ripped off. X-rays of the back are only indicated if you're looking for something like a malignancy. They are of no use in back pain for years.

HemiDemiSemiquaver · 25/07/2017 09:41

Never had x-rays at chiro.

But x-rays generally, I have seen a form (but you ticked boxes rather than get asked face to face) about pregnancy, and you have to explain how you know you're not pregnant (choices like 'not sexually active', 'not had sex since last period', 'on contraception - fill in type'; menopausal; etc., plus and 'other' choice to explain any other reason). It was quite a lot of detail. Kind of patronising I guess in that they don't trust women to know themsevles and answer honestly, but I guess maybe some don't know that x-rays could harm a foetus.

So that part doesn't seem totally off-the-wall to me, perhaps it's newer guidelines and they're trying to be thorough to stop them getting sued or something.

But removing knickers does seem weird if no reason was given.

MargotsDevil · 25/07/2017 10:11

OP I totally get that you feel somewhat silly because it was a "too good to be true" offer - but I would urge you to report - anonymously if you'd prefer. I've spent a considerable amount on chiropractic treatment and this just sounds "off" - if your report helps prevent this uncomfortable experience for someone else then it's worth your while.
