Breastfeeding at moment, 4 month old. In shower earlier and got hard lump behind nipple. Should I be worried? Cos I am.....

I had mastitis whilst breast feeding them noticed a pea sized lump a few weeks later. Go referred me and I ended up having a small biopsy (can't do mammogram if breastfeeding and the other scan they did was inconclusive). Turned out to be a galactocele, also known as milk cyst I think, and it disappeared after a bit.

I had a couple of lumps while breastfeeding. One I got checked and it was a fatty lump and the other was a blocked duct. I got rid of it by fairly running a fine tooth comb over it several times as massage by hand didn't work. It got the milk coming out and the lump disappeared immediately. Might not work for you depending where exactly the lump is but worth a try?

Fluffyears · 24/07/2017 22:00

99% of lumps are harmless...I know you think 'I might be the 1%' but it's very coincidental that it's whilst you are feeding. Think about what is happening inside your boobs, it's not surprising you have a lump. Try not to worry and 4 weeks isn't long if there is something that needs to be checked.

Thanks everyone. Going to wait a week I think and re-asses. Had a hot shower and hot water bottle on it and baby fed for 1.5 hours on that side and it's still there 😔 Not sure of time scale I should work to really. Tried massaging in shower too. Will go to gp sooner if I'm still worried as PPs have said, don't want it ruining time with my baby. Got very upset earlier. Had a rough time of it, baby 1 was IVF and baby 2 was a surprise so just starting to come out of the darkness of infertility and miscarriages and now I'm all worried again 😓

Vera 4 weeks would not be unusual if feels benign assuming you are not having periods and are under 40. Locally need to wait a cycle hence the 4 weeks unless has been there that long anyway which I guess not from your op. Try not to prod too much as you will irritate the area and may cause pain or inflammation.
Can really understand why you are feeling stressed by it

AloeVeraSeeYaCilla · 25/07/2017 00:55

Not having periods as still breastfeeding and under 40, I'm 38. Just woken up to feed baby (DH fast asleep...... How can he not hear her???!!) and lump still there. Think it could be milk related as it feels bigger.

It's still there and doesn't seem to want to shift with feeding, hot compress or massage. How long do I realistically wait without Dr Google et al panicking the crap outta me?!?

I didn't breast feed but when my milk came in with dd i had a swelling in my armpit the size of an egg. It's was massive and really tender. I was advised it was a blocked duct and it would go down. It did over a week to 10 days. Hopefully yours will start to go down.

AloeVeraSeeYaCilla · 25/07/2017 17:18

It's not painful at all and all info on t'internet says that blocked ducts are painful...

Just checking in to see how you are Aloe. Hope things are ok x

AloeVeraSeeYaCilla · 27/07/2017 01:33

It's still there and Dr Google is driving me crazy!

Hi OP - I get that you're anxious but the vast majority of lumps are either thickened breast tissue or cysts. You need a referral to a one stop breast clinic (I'm a breast consultant's secretary) where you'll have all the necessary examinations done on the day i.e mammo, USS, biopsy.

Please attend - the earlier any lump is found the better x

Starfairylights · 27/07/2017 01:45

Please don't google, it will really scare you unecessary. Don't let you drs fob you off, go back if you need to, although for the next four weeks try to put it to the back of your head (easier said then done), try not to touch it as it will irritate the area. Enjoy your baby.

Ropsleybunny · 27/07/2017 02:08

Don't wait four bloody weeks. Go back immediately and demand to be referred. It may not be anything serious but it could be. Do not be fobbed off. Flowers

Thanks everyone. Going to phone today and get appointment. Tried yesterday and got a rude receptionist giving me the "phone back tomorrow, no bookable appointments left". She was so rude despite me being in tears on the phone.

OP I found a similar lump when i was breastfeeding my then 5 week old baby. I drove myself mad, was referred to the breast clinic and then had a biopsy taken.

It was a fibroadenoma which is a common, benign breast lump that often grows during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Mine seemed to pop up suddenly which freaked me out but it went away a few months later.

Please try not to worry, the odds are very much in your favour, the vast majority of breast lumps are harmless

AloeVeraSeeYaCilla · 27/07/2017 07:00

Thanks very much PP and other PP. It's so worrying isn't it. Combined with tiredness etc, it's a recipe for disaster!

AloeVeraSeeYaCilla · 27/07/2017 09:57

GP doesn't think it's sinister but has referred me to help ease my fears.

OP Flowers We cannot diagnose you over the internet. You need to go to a one stop diagnostic clinic. I did this week and thankfully it was ok.
I paid for it though. Can you? I know how nerve wracking this is.

AloeVeraSeeYaCilla · 27/07/2017 14:24

GP is referring me today to a one stop clinic. Should hopefully hear soon.

OK Hope all is well

hoopdeloop · 27/07/2017 22:28

Glad you have been referred and fingers crossed it's positive news Flowers

AloeVeraSeeYaCilla · 28/07/2017 06:17

Thanks very much. Will keep you all posted. Thanks for support everyone 🌸 ♥

I'm really glad you went back OP. All of us need to be our own advocate with our health. No doctor cares about us as much as we care about ourselves. We are just another patient to be seen and dealt with and sometimes they get it wrong.

You definitely need this lump checking out but most breast lumps are benign. I've had three, all ok, but it's horrid waiting to go and getting results. I have everything crossed for you. Flowers
