About the spiders?

Arrived on holiday today at an 18th century countryside cottage. All absolutely charming until it was time to go to bed and between me and DH we found 17 of those horrible skinny spindly spiders on the walls and lower part of the ceiling. Very tall sloping ceiling though and plenty of nooks and crannies for more of the buggers to hide in. My skin was crawling at the thought of sleeping in there so I'm relegated to the (thankfully low-roofed) nursery where hopefully all spiders have been evacuated by very patient DH.

Obvs it's nothing in the grand scheme of things but I have emailed the letting company to ask them to come sort it out tomorrow. AIBU given that we're in the countryside, or do I have the right to expect a bedroom that isn't dripping with spiders?

Look on the bright side. At least you won't be troubled by flies :)

Mumsnut · 23/07/2017 23:50

YABU. The spindly ones eat the hairy ones. Hairy ones would be worse.

Gemini69 · 23/07/2017 23:52

cripes... your not in Norfolk are you x

AfunaMbatata · 23/07/2017 23:52

Keep the spindly ones! They be the predator of those big scary brown fuckers.

frieda909 · 24/07/2017 00:27

I really don't want to be mean because I know how crippling phobias can be but... you're staying in the countryside and you want someone to come and 'sort out' the spiders? What do you expect them to do?

I think houses that haven't been lived-in for a while always have a few spiders lurking around to start off with. I'm sure when you wake up tomorrow and start to feel a bit more settled it won't feel anywhere near as bad!

MimsyFluff · 24/07/2017 00:34

One just jumped on me #notsleepingtonight

Notknownatthisaddress · 24/07/2017 00:35

I'm not being funny OP, but you do know spiders don't just frequent old buildings right? There are probably at least half a dozen in each room in your house. Where you can't see them obvs.

Bitchfromhell · 24/07/2017 00:36

There's no such thing as spiders.

Ookmybanana · 24/07/2017 00:41

You have my sympathies because I too hate spiders, but as you rightly point out, you're in the countryside, in an old house with nooks and crannies. I'm assuming it's a rental and therefore not lived in at all times. YABU to expect it to be spider free.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 24/07/2017 00:49

I think YAB a bit U to call someone to "sort it out", sorry.
Though YANBU at all to not like it! It's just a risk of cottages, countryside, and places that aren't constantly occupied, sorry!

cloudchasing · 24/07/2017 00:57

You can't call someone to get rid of spiders in a countryside cottage 😂😂

I hate the fuckers myself, but weirdly don't mind the spindly ones as much. The fact that they're the predator of the vile brown ones makes them even better.

Theonethingididntwant · 24/07/2017 02:48

Yabu for not burning the place down and then calling up demanding a refund!!!

BreadZeppelin · 24/07/2017 07:25

I do feel like a bit of a city-dwelling twat about it. The house is pretty well occupied normally though - I know someone else left the day we arrived.

Well it's too late to unsend the email so we'll just have to wait and see what they say! If they don't help I'll borrow Bitch's there's no such thing as spiders mentality for the week!

Freakishlycommon · 24/07/2017 07:29

We have lots of the spindly ones at home. I was removing them until I read that they eat the house spiders. I live in harmony with them now.

MoonlightMedicine · 24/07/2017 07:30

We have these spiders and as soon as I clear one, another replaces it! They don't bother me at all but the kids are terrified of them.

knockknockknock · 24/07/2017 07:33

I once went to Center Parcs (you know the one in the forest) and overheard someone moaning to staff that there was too many trees and insects 🙄

Notagainmun · 24/07/2017 07:46

They should be all vacuumed up between guests. When on this kind of break DH goes in first, removes all obvious spiders then sprays the whole accommodation with Indorex. We then go for a meal or shop but an hour or so away from accommodation. Problem solved.

SleepFreeZone · 24/07/2017 07:53

I Hoover the spindly fuckers up. They offend me far more than the big hairy bastards, I save those and pop them out the window!

mumtomaxwell · 24/07/2017 07:57

Totally missing the point....
is it true that spindly ones eat the massive ones??? That is one of the best things I've ever learnt!

mygrandchildrenrock · 24/07/2017 07:57

Notagainmun I can only see Indorex for fleas, does it kill spiders too or is there one specially for spiders?

CockacidalManiac · 24/07/2017 07:58

I'm not as phobic as I used to be about spiders, but there's no way that I'd spend a night in an old countryside cottage. Those spindly ones aren't too bad, but there'll be plenty of big hairy ones around too.

everythingissoblinkinrosie · 24/07/2017 09:43

The spindly ones eat the big fuck off thick legged ones? That is awesome if true.
Op , I once stayed in a lovely cottage... with mice scrabbling in the eaves. Or worse but I don't want to think about the worse.
There is an element of "suck it up, townie" that has to be endured.

cloudchasing · 24/07/2017 13:10

Right, I do need to know if that's true! So those big ones with the tiny body and mega thin long spindly legs eat the big brown running fuckers?? How? I am genuinely interested. I dream of the day I can pick one up without crying.

GladAllOver · 24/07/2017 13:22

Yes. The spiders with tiny bodies and very long legs are Pholcus Phalangioides. They do indeed predate other spiders as well as any insects they can catch.

They are of course entirely harmless to humans and will run a mile if you try to catch one.

Freakishlycommon · 24/07/2017 13:24

Interestingly until last year I had never noticed the spindly spiders in our house and we've lived here for years. Now we are overrun. I wonder what's changed? Is there a spindly spider epidemic?
