Are 21st birthdays a thing still?

DD is 21 in October. A friend asked me yesterday what I was doing for it....Have a booked a venue for a party.
Hadn't even considered it. She will be away at university. I asked her what she was doing a d she just said no idea. Maybe dinner with friends but no big deal.
She had a huge party for her 18th.
I don't think being 21 is a big deal.

21st isn't a big deal (unless you're in America).

TartanDMs · 23/07/2017 17:06

I drank a bottle of champagne on my 21st and spent the rest of the week in hospital. I was 8 months pregnant though.

BackforGood · 23/07/2017 17:23

Only if they didn't want to do anything for their 18th, and have now come round to the idea.

ds has been to a couple of parties of his friends this Summer, but they are friends who didn't publically celebrate their 18ths.

greendale17 · 23/07/2017 17:25

Everyone I know had a big party for their 21st

threedayrule · 23/07/2017 17:32

In our family we choose 18 or 21 as the big make a fuss birthday. The other is celebrated but not with a big party or anything.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 23/07/2017 17:38

I had a house party for both. Family was more involved with my 18th which conveniently fell on a Saturday as I was based at home. At 21, it was term time so a cluster of uni friends. Nothing mad or debauched Wink

Allthebestnamesareused · 23/07/2017 18:12

Ds was at uni for his 21st so arranged a Tesco delivery for 8am with a birthday cake and 3 bottles of champagne and a crate of beer so he could celebrate with housemates

kittapie · 23/07/2017 18:18

I had a friend whose parents threw her a party that cost £15k+... tbf, it was pretty incredible.

Unihorn · 23/07/2017 18:48

I had a bit of a posh family meal for both birthdays, and stayed in a hotel with my (now) husband for my 21st too.

Think it depends on university dates too a bit. I'm summer born so my 21st fell when I was at home otherwise I doubt my parents would have organised the meal.

AndHoldTheBun · 23/07/2017 19:12

21st birthdays are a big deal here (Scotland, farming community). For mine (many years ago!), we had a huge family party, special gifts (even from those who wouldn't normally give you birthday gifts), a bottle of malt whisky or jewellery, a watch or similar.

Still the same for my DC's generation- some go for a full black tie/kilt event with meals, speeches, the full works! We did big family meal with champagne for ours - 21 is properly adult!

Albertschair · 24/07/2017 06:04

21st is the big celebration in my family.

18 th is just another birthday. Same as 16 th or 25 th. Then no biggie until you are 40

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 24/07/2017 07:28

21st birthday parties are the done thing in our family, I also had an 18th party but 21 was the best.
Ultimately it's up to your DD but I do think it's nice to make a fuss of these milestones. The next one is 40 really ( though I did have a 'suprise' 30th, I had a young baby at the time and really didn't want any fuss).

Goldfishshoals · 24/07/2017 07:31

I think you either have a big party for your 18th or 21st, not both.

This is how it's worked in my social circle.

Crispsheets · 24/07/2017 07:33

Why is 21 a milestone though?

elQuintoConyo · 24/07/2017 07:37

I had a family meal out for my 18th and a boozey night out with my uni friends for my 21st.

No one i know had a big 21st party. I'm 42 and English.

KC225 · 24/07/2017 08:02

I remember 18ths and 21st being huge but less so nowadays or perhaps I know less young ones. O's seem to have taken over. 30ths, 40ths etc. They seem to be huge. And I worked with a girl who claimed 35 was a big one and trying to stake the day with an over the top celebration. I didn't get that one at all.

Guccibelt · 24/07/2017 08:14

21 used to be a big milestone but these days families and young people seem to celebrate 18ths more.

StickThatInYourPipe · 24/07/2017 08:18

I had a big party for my 21st but that was only because I had to cancel my 18th due to a random severe bought of tonsillitis - couldn't even get out of bed to open my presents!

sparklyelephant · 24/07/2017 09:12

Years ago, 21 was when you came of age.. i.e. An adult.

I was greedy I had an 16th, an 18th and a 21st, I also had a 40th and last year my 50th,
I do love a good party GrinCakeWine

MerchantofVenice · 24/07/2017 09:24

I think posh people go in for big marquee-type 21st parties with speeches from uncles. I had no idea about this till I was at uni, because I am common.

Katiepoes · 24/07/2017 09:26

21 is big in Ireland, I was pretty much forced to have a big extended family party and hated it.

18 on the other hand - I was away from home in Berlin for the summer and that celebration went on for about a week in some spectacularly dodgy places, no creepy uncles talking shite about 'I used to change your nappy' and drama queen aunts blathering about 'ooh your engagement will be next'. 21 schmentyone.

senua · 24/07/2017 09:33

I organised the DCs 18ths and let them, away at University, sort out their own 21sts. My idea of a celebration was a big party in the village hall. Theirs seemed to consist of a week of partying.

senua · 24/07/2017 09:35

Oh! So the opposite of Katiepoes.Grin

stephanielittl7 · 24/07/2017 10:20

Ds had a dinner party for his 18th just a small one with close family. For his 21st we went to a pub with some of his friends. All very low key as he has sn and cant really cope with all the attention on him. He will be 25 at christmas and have no idea what to do for it. He wants to go for a night out round our local town but its got really rough in the last few years so thats a no no. Didnt know that celebrating 21st wasnt a thing anymore? I did celebrate mine but i dont remember much of it Grin -and that was a long time ago now

BingoFlamingos · 24/07/2017 11:26

We (I'm from a multiple birth) had a party. But my family always have a party. Are you one? Party. Is granny Jean 101? Party. Person X has Died? Party.
