Gingerism. Am I unreasonable to think it should be outlawed by now (lighthearted)

So, obviously by my username you can guess my colouring, and I've recently read posts by pale-skins where people think it's acceptable to comment on your colouring, which often feel awkward, uncomfortable, rude or downright predatory. As an example, "do collar and cuffs match?" Is still (and I'm in my 40s) a favourite (my usual reply us: "what do you expect? Purple feathers?"

But I'd love to know, what's the cheesiest/cheekiest/worst comment you've ever had in relation to your looks? (If only to make me feel like I'm not alone!)

When i was about 16 a fully grown woman told me that if she knew she was carrying a ginger baby she would have an abortion.

My children are both red heads.

My neighbour's grown up daughter upon meeting my baby son said to her mother "Uch mum his hair's not that bad is it?".

An American couple (complete strangers) said to my brown haired husband while we shoping "what a shame your kids didn't get your colouring"

Gingerism is alive and kicking. Sometimes literally.

LordTrash · 21/07/2017 23:35

Her eyes are bright blue rather than green. Sister (non-ginger) has green eyes though.

gingergenius · 21/07/2017 23:37

I was sad - all of mine were born with gingery brown hair, then it all rubbed off and they turned blind! Gutted!!!

gingergenius · 21/07/2017 23:37

@MandateMandy that's horrible!

PickAChew · 21/07/2017 23:37

Green eyes sometimes don't express until primary school age, btw.

gingergenius · 21/07/2017 23:39

@Redsrule yes!

@MandateMandy that's so sad!!
Lots of people were negative to me in primary school but I've not heard anything negative since then. If people mention it I still get the shivers though I never know what to respond!! I think it is dying out though I usually jut get compliments.
It's fashionable at the moment!

mogulfield · 21/07/2017 23:40

My DH was bullied a school for being ginger, made his life a misery.
When he was at Uni his 'mates' too the piss he would never get laid.
He now gets comments about him smelling of 'piss and twiglets' and he's been told he has no soul! Confused

FuzzyOwl · 21/07/2017 23:40

There are certain shades of red hair that are my absolute favourite and I would love to have. I've also really wanted green eyes all of my life but my eye colour is too dark for even coloured contacts to give me the desired shade.

I thought that too about Americans. I'm pretty sure this couple were not representative. My normally mild mannered husband nearly choked on his Starbucks and blurted out "well that's just an incredibly stupid thing to have said". I think they thought they were having a bit of banter??? Hmm

elephantoverthehill · 21/07/2017 23:54

Gingergenius I hope you meant blonde not blind.

Guepe · 21/07/2017 23:56

The usual abusive comments, including several from the owner of a company during a job interview I was having with them (and walked out of).

DingDongDenny · 21/07/2017 23:58

I had are you a jaffa - 'orangey bit in the middle'

EasilyDistracted77 · 22/07/2017 00:00

Anyone else get told that they'd feel the pain of labour more intensely because they were a redhead? WTF!
Another green-eyed red-head here.

gingerscot · 22/07/2017 00:06

I've never had any of these types of comments. My "fuck off and don't mess me with me" face may help. I've had it since I was born apparently 😂 I love being ginger. And only had positive comments on my lovely pale, unlined, skin. Some positives to staying in shade all the time...

MandateMandy · 22/07/2017 00:07

I've also just had lots of experiences where the word ginger was used as part of the insult... "Silly ginger bitch" ... "ugly ginger bitch"...etc. It seems much more prevalent than say "Silly brunette bitch" !!

However, i do love having red hair and always have. Even when i was bullied or teased. It was gorgeous when i was younger and actually the only part of my physical appearance that i've ever really liked.

'Mon the gingers!! Grin

MandateMandy · 22/07/2017 00:10

I didn't get told the painful child birth thing but i was told by a midwife that i would probably need iron tablets after the birth because red heads usually do ????? I didn't and am unconvinced of the science behind this suposition Grin

gingergenius · 22/07/2017 00:14

@MandateMandy yes!!

Some unknown bloke came up to me at a party once and "don't worry they can treat cancer, there'll be a cure for ginger hair soon".

I dye mine red. I am a wannabe ginger 😉

gingergenius · 22/07/2017 00:15

@EasilyDistracted77 always have to have more anaesthetic for ops. The docs have always made a point of telling me I need more! Something to do with higher pain threshold?

OP posts:
MandateMandy · 22/07/2017 00:23

I have a very high pain threshold. Just thought I was hard!

gingergenius · 22/07/2017 00:24

You and me both @MandateMandy !

Ginger dd is tough as nails. Always covered in bruises, never has any clue how she got them.

(Though that's prob just the delicate alabaster skin.)

FallenPetalsSummerDew · 22/07/2017 01:07

I've posted before about my children and myself and our ginger hair, I've got green eyes and my children blue. 2 out of 4 of the children have experienced bullying and I was bullied for 7 years at school for being ginger! 'Ginger minger' 'ging-errr' 'tangoed' 'ginger b**t' 'ugly' ...every day. Hated it! Dread the prospect of my children going through it anymore than they already have. One child was told 'Ginger people are stupid' 'You're useless because you're ginger' She's 8! Told her about Ed Sheeran, (well she knows who he is anyway), Lily Cole, Jess Glynne....and then could only think of Chris Evans!
