To ignore St. Delia of Norwich?

I live in the US and I'm going to a potluck at a friend's house tomorrow. Last time I made trifle (a couple fo years ago), it was very well received, and my friends all loved my English style. So, I thought I'd just check the recipe before going to the store for ingredients.

I have TWO tried & tested cook books - one that was the "modern" version of my mum's old one (this modern one is itself over 30 years old) and Delia.

BOTH of them say that trifle is made with trifle sponges, raspberry jam, and a sprinkling of sherry. Then custard. Where's the JELLY?

WIBU to ignore these ancient sages, and to make mine with trifle sponge (SOAKED in Pimms (can't get sherry)), then strawberries in strawberry jelly, made with Pimms instead of water, then the custard?

I'm sure that's how I normally make it - about once every two years. I'll pour the jelly over the sponges whilst it's still liquid so that they are a jellied, strawberried delight with Pimms flavoring.

Love trifle so just joining for the recipes!

stoplickingthetelly · 22/07/2017 07:48

100% go with the jelly!

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 22/07/2017 07:52

I now want trifle. For breakfast.

TaggieRR · 22/07/2017 07:56

Please help with the Jelly made up with Pimms - presumably you mean Pimms and lemonade not near Pimms?!

Kittenswithattitudeandchickens · 22/07/2017 07:58

I'm not a fan of cold custard so my go to trifle is sliced strawberry Swiss roll with strawberry jelly poured over, strawberry angel delight, whipped cream. Decorate with small or sliced strawberries and grated dark chocolate. Yum!

StorminaBcup · 22/07/2017 08:05

My mum's trifle was amazing: lady fingers, pineapple chunks, sherry, all left to soak; cooled custard poured over and covered with damp kitchen roll until set; whipped cream added before serving and covered with almond flakes.

Best. Trifle. Ever. Smile

Oblomov17 · 22/07/2017 08:07

I like jelly in a trifle.

ForalltheSaints · 22/07/2017 08:09

My mum has sworn by Delia recipes for so long I am sure that she has a recipe or ccokbook in old money. The OP had outed my mum for making a trifle not according to a Delia recipe. I will forgive her.

PocketNiffler · 22/07/2017 08:44

My fiend makes trifle using Malibu for the sponge soaking. It is yum.

KickAssAngel · 22/07/2017 13:44

My kitchen smells of strawberries & Pimm's. Mmmmmm.

And I just had cold custard for breakfast. Grin

Trifle for breakfast is my Boxing day treat.

I have a first course of reheated pigs in blankets and stuffing (special bacon and walnut recipe we only have at christmas) with gravy. Then breakfast pudding of leftover trifle straight from the serving dish.

Then back to bed with belly ache until lunchtime!

MrsWembley · 23/07/2017 21:18

Bouncy, not if I can help it Wink

I love trifle for breakfast at Christmas, too! It's completely acceptable and nobody stares, oh no...

BoysofMelody · 23/07/2017 21:25

I hadn't realised anyone below my Nan's age was still eating a 'nice bit of trifle'

KenDoddsDadsDog · 23/07/2017 21:29

Sponges soaked in Chambord = best ever

CaveMum · 23/07/2017 21:37

I have to say that Delia's Christmas Trifle (made with Pannatone instead of sponge fingers and soaked in Marsala rather than sherry) is divine!

JemDoughnut · 23/07/2017 22:29

@HelenaJustina If you're ever after veggie jelly, Asda normally stock Ahmed's jelly in the World Foods section.

wictional · 23/07/2017 22:37

Trifle is my favourite dessert but I stopped reading at jelly - that's for cheap supermarket ones only Sad

HelenaJustina · 24/07/2017 14:42

Thank you Jem!

KickAssAngel · 24/07/2017 16:01

Just had trifle for breakfast! Loved it, including the jelly.

I know everyone is saying that jelly is 'cheap' or lower class, but it's what I was brought up on. And my mum made it how she & Dad liked it, based on their boarding-school childhoods. So, I figure that if it's good enough for a middle class boarding school, it's good enough for me.
