To feel my house is too small

I feel down...maybe I'm being unreasonable. I have just finally bought my own house but I'm struggling...its small and we can't even fit a dining table in the kitchen! I've just been to a friend's house who has a lovely home and I'm just feeling very envious. This place is a constant tip...we have a lovely garden but it's the eating situation that's bothering me.

Our dining room is carpeted, can't be arsed to change it. When kids were littler would just put oilcloth underneath their chairs.

Apartment therapy is a US site that has lots of pics of challenging small spaces, have a browse.

We have a small house on purpose, and love it. In an ideal world I'd love a bigger kitchen (is small with definitely no room for table!) but not enough to spend money on it in place of paying down mortgage for example.

This is a bad pic of our dining area, we have a kind of open plan, on my left hand side from vantage point is living room with log burner etc, small kitchen is through that door you can see.

No worries BloodWorries. It looks good doesn't it, it's the one I've got my eye on for when we move to the new place.

Oilcloth under small children's chairs, Rugdoctor occasionally. Also are your sofas too big for the space? Too-big sofas can make any room feel claustrophobic.

I think you need to find a "thing" about your house that you love. I didn't love this house either, it was totally a head over heart decision, but this is normal for those of us who aren't millionaires. Find things you love about your house. I love my woodburner and my rug.

OatcakeCravings · 21/07/2017 17:04

Just buy a rug, you can get a big one to go under the dining table and chairs for about £45 from Amazon.

I had to kind of buy the house. I was in rented but in a position to buy. My landlord gave me notice so I made a quick decision

I put an oil cloth table cloth under my high chair when we had only the option of a carpeted floor. Is their room for a breakfast bar?

You need to get some storage sorted out and have a chuck out then you can start on how to fit things in.

Bluntness100 · 21/07/2017 18:59

Can you copy and paste a link from when you bought it? People can then advise better,

grasspigeons · 21/07/2017 19:01

It's expensive but the futon company do a folding dining table that when folded would seat 2 like a breakfast bar, then you could fold it out in the other room if ever needed www.futoncompany.co.uk/tables-desks-and-chairs/dining-tables/oak-console-table-100cm.html my aunt has it in her small house

BabychamSocialist · 21/07/2017 19:10

Before we extended our kitchen it was this awful galley thing with barely any room for a table. We got this small table where the chairs slotted under it and ended up loving it. We kept it that way for 10 years and I still miss it a bit now. We have a breakfast bar now!

MintJulip · 21/07/2017 19:15

I like addicted idea of simply getting rid of the carpet or accepting it will get dirty, or buying cotton easily washable rugs to put down.

I wouldn't stop my life and where I wanted to eat for fear of a carpet.

We have rectangle living room, we have a folding table tucked into the corner. its still half size but doesn't dominate the room, but in summer we mostly eat outside.

Really impressed by these clever fold away table ideas though and we also cant fit a table in the kitten.

Zoflorabore · 21/07/2017 19:25

Listen op- remember the old saying " it's not the size that matters it's what you do with it " also applies to small kitchens with no room for a table and cream carpet in lounge Grin

Put your own stamp on the house, it's yours, enjoy it!
Good luck

d270r0 · 21/07/2017 20:12

We use a fold out table. Just make sure you get one on wheels so its easy to move around. My last one wasn't on wheels and I dropped it on my toe and nearly broke it. Immediately bought another one on wheels!

Didactylos · 21/07/2017 20:43

please dont try and fit a table in the kitten MintJulep
I can tell you with certainty it will be too small Grin
