Flying with upset stomach?

I've had a pretty bad stomach bug of some description (i.e. could be a virus, could be something I ate...) since Tuesday evening. I think it's slightly better this morning, I haven't got a temperature any more and I can contemplate moving from one room to another without thinking it's akin to climbing Everest. But, I'm due to fly to Spain tomorrow - AIBU to still want to fly? Obviously I don't want to pass on the bug (if it is a bug) but would I still be infectious? And if I was uber strict about hygiene would I even be able to pass it on?

I'm a moron and hadn't bought my insurance yet - was on my to-do list for today.

If I'm ok the rest of today/tomorrow morning I'm going to fly. I won't be quite 48 hours clear but I will be scrupulous with my hand washing etc. I will also only be sitting with my friends on the plane, and none of them are immuno-suppressed/pregnant etc.

Thank goodness none of your friends are immuno -suppressed or pregnant, as we know germs can only jump no more then 2 plane seats. Stuff the rest of the passengers ConfusedHmm

Thanks for that super helpful and constructive comment, tiredbum. Hmm

If you're very careful with hygiene and ok today and tomorrow you're ok. Hope you feel better for the flight.

Doesn't sound like a bug tbh

Sounds exactly like a bug Confused

"And if I was uber strict about hygiene would I even be able to pass it on?"

I was on a five hour flight on Christmas Eve where several children were vomiting. The flight attendants must have been at risk every time they collecting the bags I should imagine, so if you are still actively ill, then I don't think you could practice the strict hygiene that would be required.

That said, if you have been clear for almost 48 hours and you are feeling quite well again, the risk is probably quite low. In an ideal world, I wouldn't go unless the full 48 hours was up. In the real world, I probably would.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/07/2017 18:21

You might practice strict hygiene by washing hands thoroughly but the person in the loo after you won't know you're contagious plus will be using the handle/lock on the way out that you used on the way in...

welshweasel · 21/07/2017 18:22

If I wasn't actively vomiting or having diarrhoea and had been fine for the preceding 12 hours then yes I'd fly.

Crunchymum · 21/07/2017 19:46

tiredbum makes a very valid point. Just because none of your party are pregnant or immunocompressed doesn't mean you won't spread your germs?

tiredbum · 21/07/2017 21:02

Well unless you are going on a private jet and it's only your friends onboard, it does not matter if your sitting near friends, germs travel very well in tiny confined air conditioned climates especially when the air is recycled.

You know you are being selfish or you would or you would not have made a post.

I really hope there are no patients with cancer etc on your flight. Have a great time Grin

There was a post a few days ago about how many people come back from Centre Parcs with a bug of some sort. Think I know the reason why...

Yep, that's exactly why. Blerk

You will get a hard time on here but I think some people on MN over react about things like this. You will be branded selfish and people will be gobsmacked you could consider going out in public when it's may not quite be exactly 48 hours.

You are an adult and can take good hygiene precautions where a child may not unless constantly monitored.

48 hours off work/school/away from public spaces since the last instance of D&V tends to be what is advised, but you will know yourself how you are really feeling.

Since it started on Tuesday I would assume you are ok now as long as the D&V has not happened for the best part of 2 days. You will still feel ropey and have a painful stomach but that's aftermath of being ill and vomiting. It takes time to feel normal and get the appetite back.

I would stop taking any anti sickness/diarrhoea pills and make sure it doesn't start up again to be safe.

My main concern if it was me would be feeling poorly away from home but you know how you feel!

Keep to yourself on the plane, wash your hands regularly and take some antibacterial gel/wipes to keep your hands clean.
