To share too much in my blog

I write a blog. It started off fairly lighthearted but a couple of years ago, I got quite ill and started writing about my struggles with mental illness. Mainly anxiety. The feedback from friends and colleagues has been overwhelmingly positive.

My DH has always thought I shared too much. I do write about very personal things but a) it helps me to write about it and b) I know it helps others as I've had lots of messages from people saying so. We've disagreed about the things I've published in the past and so he decided to just not read my blog. The problem is my mother in law still reads it and often talks to him about the things I've said.

Tonight, we've had an argument because I said I wanted to write about my experiences of having an eating disorder in the past. I wanted to warn him as I knew my mother in law would tell him about it. No one knows about the eating disorder, so it may come as a shock to some people, but it's only recently after having therapy that I feel ready to open up about this.

He thinks I put too much of myself out there and that this will come back to bite me. I just can't see how raising awareness can be a bad thing. AIBU to write about this?

I'd hate her knowing and the never-ending circle of conversation. could you ask her please, if you are going to read it don't discuss with X as he doesn't read it. Or tell him to tell his mother to shut up about it.

Thanks AnnieLouise. I have tried this but she doesn't seem to listen. They're very close and speak everyday and she tells him everything.

I don't want to hurt him in anyway or fight about this but it's starting to make me doubt myself and now I'm wondering if it is a step too far.

Isn't it possible to make your blog invitation only? If your MIL asks to be invited, just say that you have made it private for all but a few friends with similar issues as a place for mutual support.

I think you should do what you like as it's your life. I'm very private so for me it would be hard to do. Do you want everyone in your circle knowing? Personally, I wouldn't. Would it cloud any job prospects? (In terms of prospective employers looking you up and deciding against you.) Only you can tell. And circumstances change too. You might be fine with it now but what about in the future. What if you have children - would you want them knowing? They might be fine but what if their friends found you and teased them about it? Do people on your blog contact you to discuss the things your write about or is it just for you to offload? Could you not just keep a diary? Why a blog?

I initially started writing the blog to try and explain to people about my anxiety as I found it easier to write about than talk about. But I got such a good reaction to it from others that now I write it to help others too as I think it's important to raise awareness.
