...suitcase for a family of four going on a 5 day city break visit? Dh thinks we can; I'm not so sure. The dc are 8 & 11 if that helps!

Many thanks for your thoughts on this!

Hand luggage is not weight limited - just dimensions. It's easyJet. I'm in admiration of all you very light cabin bag only packers - for a whole family. Wow! ShockGrin

EasyJet do ONLY let you have that one cabin bag, no extra handbag as well (unless you've booked a certain amount of extras).

I would book another suitcase. You're waiting for luggage anyway. You'll have a nicer time.

42isthemeaning · 21/07/2017 08:58

Don't all of us get one cabin bag each though, e.g. 4 cabin bags? I have a fold up rucksack which I could pack away to use whilst in the city. Dh has a money belt. We arrive really early, so will need to carry our luggage around with us until we can check in to the hotel...

Yes you do get a cabin bag each, but your handbag or rucksack have to be stored inside it before you get on the plane. That's definitely the case with Easijet but some airlines let you have a small bag as well.

Trills · 21/07/2017 09:06

The hotel will have a place for you leave your bags there.

Since you already have one checked bag, in your position I would get another and then relax about the packing.

I would have things that I wanted for the plane and for the first day in easy-to-carry bags, and then leave the suitcases at the hotel. I would not have mini suitcases on the plane, I would not have to faff about half-unpacking half-repacking to find the things I wanted.

Lots of people have said the opposite, I'm just saying what I would do.

We've just done 2 weeks in Spain for 4 (DC's are 3 and just 2) with 20kg cabin luggage. We didn't even use hand luggage except for the essentials we needed for the journey!

ln1981 · 21/07/2017 09:13

we are a family of 5 and we have just come back from Prague ( a 5 day break also and also arrived very early morning!) and it is possible.

We had one hold case and we all carried hand luggage-none of us had to pack any clothing in our hand luggage, and the kids mainly had books and tablets in theirs. And none of us took extra shoes. A previous bad experience with sandals in Prague meant it was trainers all week for me!

We found a nice park to sit once we got to the city not far from where we were staying, grabbed some food and just settled down for a couple of hours.

Oly5 · 21/07/2017 09:16

I hate packing light and love to change clothes in the evenings. It's part of the holiday for me! Each to their own

kingjofferyworksintescos · 21/07/2017 09:17

You shouldn't have to carry your luggage around if you arrive very early , most hotels will have a suitcase dropping room so you can leave it and then collect it later when you check in
Have a great trip !

QueenArseClangers · 21/07/2017 09:27

We went to Greece for ten days, 2 adults and 5 DC. We had a hand luggage case each and a suitcase.

Aaaaaaw, when you go to Prague please will you wave to the Town Hall that's next to the astronomical clock? We got married there and have such lovely memories. Hopefully going back next year Smile

GavelRavel · 21/07/2017 09:29

I reckon so if you have a rucksack each, or even a cabin bag.

we went to Spain for 7 night recently family of 5 beach holiday and we had one 30kg in the hold, 3 cabin bags and a rucksack and that was with beach stuff, rubber rings, snorkels etc.

Tazerface · 21/07/2017 12:02

Yeah with EasyJet I had my holdall and a plastic bag with my purchases which I stuffed in there. Had a day bag for when I got there.

Bought these from Amazon one each and then only used two! They are made to budget airline restrictions and because they are bags rather than cases you can squish them well.

Trills · 21/07/2017 12:24

You've linked to your personal order history there Tazer so we can't see what you bought.

GavelRavel · 21/07/2017 12:58

mine is supposed to say one 20kg in the hold btw!

I use worlds lightest cabin cases for the hand luggage.

Code42 · 21/07/2017 15:11

The advantage of having hold luggage is that you can put almost everything in it, and avoid the traditional route-march-through-an-over-heated-terminal with a heavy bag on your back. I've just done 6 weeks in East Africa (so no shorts - though I'm staggered at people wearing shorts on a city break) hand luggage only but checked it in on all the flights except the last leg from Europe on Easyjet to my regional airport. Easyjet then asked if they could check it at the gate Grin I had seventeen different flights on this trip: not once was my luggage not already going round whilst I was going through immigration.

HicDraconis · 21/07/2017 15:23

Perfectly doable. We are currently in the middle of a 5 day city break somewhere wet and windy and took one large suitcase for all of us (me, DH, boys aged 9&11).

The case held shared toiletries bag (which is huge), 6 changes of underwear each, 5 full changes of clothes each, a couple of warmer layers each - and weighed 19kg at checkin. Carry on bags had kindles/iPads/headphones only, didn't need to put anything else in them.

manglethedangle · 21/07/2017 16:06

Easily. Pre DC DH and I only ever took hand luggage for trips less than a week. We now use one suitcase for the three of us (plus hand luggage) and end up taking waaaay too much stuff because of the extra room we have.

Oblomov17 · 21/07/2017 16:12

Blimey. I can't believe what little you all take....

BarbaraofSeville · 21/07/2017 20:37

When I travel hand luggage only I will have 3 day dresses, plus shorts and a few vests, cropped trousers, 4 dresses for evening plus a couple of little cardigans, plus shoes, underwear, swimwear, toiletries etc, plus the jeans, hoodie and converse for travelling in. All fits in a cabin case including a small handbag and possibly a small rucksack and plenty to wear different clothes in the evening. This is a summer city break so everything is lightweight and packs small. I don't think the OP needs a second hold case at all, what she has is plenty.

Tazerface · 22/07/2017 17:23

Oh bugger thanks Trills.

This any better?

Trills · 22/07/2017 17:37

Yep I can see that :)

I hope you got the purple one.

toosexyforyahshirt · 22/07/2017 17:42

We do 10 days for a family of six with one 20kg bag (plus hand luggage each). I can't imagine what you would be taking?

Lordofmyflies · 22/07/2017 17:49

I've just finished packing 2X 20 kg cases, one with clothes in, and the other with toiletries, shoes, swim stuff and a backpack for hand luggage each. Thats for 2.5 weeks with DC same age as yours.
City breaks we try and stick to hand luggage!

LittleOwl153 · 22/07/2017 17:51

We did Spain for 2 weeks, 2 adults, 8yr old, 3yr old. 4x 10kg cabin bag, 4x 'handbag' on Ryanair. Packed all the little toiletries in clear bags in 1 handbag, and electronics for unpacking at security. 5 outfits each plus swimming kits. Not a problem!
Would probably have preferred to dump cabin bags at check in- if I'm honest especially as they put them in the hold anyway at the gate - but not for £50 a go!

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 22/07/2017 19:11

Of course you can do it! We did 2 weeks in Greece with just easyJet hand baggage - 2 adults, 2 DC and that included a couple of snorkel sets! Summer clothes are so lightweight and you really don't need many shoes for a 5 day city break.
