Friend thinks I'm being ridiculous, but I've noticed these bruises on my thighs and think it may be linked to the amount I drink. For the past twenty years I've drunk quite a lot, quite regularly (although no alcohol when pregnant or breastfeeding months).

I thought I should see the doctor, but my friend thinks I'm being over-the-top because they're just bruises.

AIBU? Thanks.

How much do you drink?

Lweji · 20/07/2017 08:57

It's never ridiculous to see a doctor. It's their job to evaluate what it is.

RoganJosh · 20/07/2017 08:57

Didn't mean that to sound so blunt, sorry!

Go to the GP. Bruises could be absolutely anything but you're obviously aware of your excessive drinking and concerned about it's consequences. Get checked and take steps to address the drink.

For the past ten years, it's been roughly two bottles of wine per week, with the occasional binge. Before that, it was about ten years of drinking in to oblivion on a regular basis.

Not quite sure what your logic is to think they are related to alcohol rather than just bruises. How much do you drink on a daily/weekly basis? See your GP if you are worried, but it sounds like you think you drink too much so maybe try to cut down. I drink quite a lot so try to have 2 or 3 alcohol free days per week. Would you feel able to do this? Can you stop drinking once you start? Do you drink so much you are sick or can't remember what happened? Have you been unable to do what is normally expected of you due to drinking? These are the sort of screening questions yog may be asked by your GP.

Two bottles of wine a week is not a lot.

acquiescence · 20/07/2017 09:03

Your liver regenerates very well so it has more than likely recovered from 10 years ago. 2 bottles of wine a week is above guidelines but not much really so unlikely to be impacting on your health in an immediate way, for example causing bruises. If you see your GP they will probably advise you to cut down to NHS guideline limits.

Thanks everyone.
I have a friend who died of alcoholism, eight years ago. One of his first symptoms was bruises on his thighs, so when I saw these odd little bruises I thought it might be alcohol related.
I don't drink enough to vomit or black out any more.

My aunt drank herself to death . Denied she was an alcoholic wouldn't get help and now when I have a drink I worry I'll become an alcoholic and have massive guilt . Go to the doctor and get a kidney and liver function test to put your mind at ease
