Camping in adverse weather...WWYD

We are on our bigger summer holiday, coming to the end of 2 wks in Cornwall. Has mixed weather but a lovely time.

Camping in newly (nearly finished) converted campervan with awning.

We are due to go home on Sunday. Has pissed it down most of today, forecast looks clear tomorrow. Then gales and rain again on Friday, followed by heavy stormy showers on Saturday and Sunday apparently...so chances of sunshine at the weekend as well.

We are debating going to the beach in the morning then packing up in the dry while hopefully the large tent/awning is dry and heading off at lunchtime, which would get us home early/mid evening.

Or, sticking with the normal plan. Kids are best buddies with campsite owners' son so we had planned that they would play on Sat when he is off school, have a nice final bit of time together before we head off on Sunday.

But I'm worried that there will be more showers than sunshine on the Saturday, meaning we pack away a wet awning while dodging rain and entertaining the 3 kids as they dodge it too.

But it feels mean to leave early! Especially as there may be sunshine on Sat, and the kids would love to play together some more.

WWYD?

Much better to pack away a dry awning than wet. Can you sleep in the campervan without the awning for a few nights?

Ellapaella · 19/07/2017 21:23

In all honesty if it were me I'd be packing up the tent and finding a nice B & B or hotel for the last few days! Would that be an option? If not I'd probably do what the kids wanted, if they were happy to stay on in the rain I'd probably grin and bear it and dry the tent out when we got home

Pack away the awning while dry regardless. Then ask the kids whether they want to risk staying longer and it raining for the rest of the stay, or whether they'd rather head home early and spend a weekend doing something else fun instead.

We had this in January (NZ summer!) - went to an amazing campsite, had a few fab days, and then the exposed coast wind & rain gave us a taster of what the remainder of the planned trip would be like. We took advantage of the first dry spell to dry the tents, pack up and drive 5h south to the hot pools for the rest of the week. And a motel :)

We asked the kids their opinions too - I was all for staying and enjoying the storms, but DH and both boys like their home comforts and walls that don't blow into you 😂

Issue is that with the tent all packed up everything that is in it needs a home, not leaving much space in the van for us, especially if we are sheltering in it on the Friday and needing to go out and do stuff.

I'd stay but I also camp in -25C so I am perhaps not exactly reasonable Grin

Do you have somewhere at home to set things up and dry them out before packing them away properly? That's the only part I hate about inclement weather camping, dealing with the wet gear when you get home.

HicDraconis · 19/07/2017 21:32

In that case, I would pack up when dry and head to a motel for the rest of the week :)

chitofftheshovel · 19/07/2017 21:37

Yup it's been pretty shit weather down here really. Try and stay if you can, whereabouts are you camping?

Middleagedmumoftwo · 19/07/2017 21:41

Could you pack the awning while it's dry and ask the site owners to store it until you leave?

ghostyslovesheets · 19/07/2017 22:12

no harm packing it wet IF you have a garage etc in which to dry it when you get home - just put it up

If not I would leave early - only because my tent is huge and too big to put up in my garden to dry!
