To take DS12 to the doctors

Over the last maybe 2 weeks, he's had had 2/3 separate sore stomachs, plus 2 separate episodes of vomiting, the last of which was last night. He's not had much appetite the last few days and his dad thinks this has been ongoing for the period, although I had put it down to just eating breakfast later, getting food while out with friends during to holidays, etc.

I should say that his diet isn't great, as he's pretty fussy. Dinner is usually pasta, chicken, rice, etc. But this is his "normal" and this stomach/sickness thing is new.

Don't want to waste the docs time, but it's really not like him to be ill, although he's been fine in between each incident. It's not a lingering thing, more sporadic.

What do you think?

I would presume it was a lingering bug.

**and wouldn't go to the GP

I think you should take your child to the doctor. If you want to be sure call and ask for a phone appointment, describe symptoms and ask if he needs to be seen. Or use the medical help line thing.

I had very similar situation, (same aged child) and doctor said yes bring her in. She was checked over, she was fine but doctor did want to see her.

Please do not worry about wasting doctors time with a sick child. Our doctors has a video about not wasting A and E time and the video contains a pet and a reminder to take your pet to the vet and not A and E!

So as long as you are not taking your pet to A and E, go for it!

I really hope all is well and the doctor will advise you well.

Thanks

Thank you both.

might try for a phone appointment first, though I'm not sure my surgery does that. He also mentioned feeling dizzy and seeing spots tonight, which could obviously just be a coincidence. He didn't tell me until later on, after it happened. And I suppose it could simply be because he's not really eaten proper meals today, just toast, fruit and cereals bars, that kind of thing. Drinking plenty though.

Any chance it's abdominal migraines?

spewylewis · 19/07/2017 00:27

Quickly reading up on them now, he hasn't always had the symptoms simultaneously.
It's been sickness or stomach ache. He said he had diarrhoea last night too, not long after dinner, then vomiting during the night.

Think I'll need to start a diary if there's any more.

I would phone and ask for either a phone consult, or make an app. If they haven't got anything for over a week, i'd look to see if there are any walk in centres within an area you could reasonably get to. It's not something i'd go to A+E with, but it won't be fun for your on waiting a week or more so i'd want him seen sooner rather than later.

spewylewis · 19/07/2017 07:41

Thanks. He won't have to wait. Our surgery gives only appointments for same day. You actually can't book in advance Confused

Id keep an eye on him but wouldn't take him unless symptoms continued for more than another few days/week. At this point it just sounds like a stomach bug.

HeyRoly · 19/07/2017 07:53

I agree with Barbarian. Sounds like a D&V bug and it just needs to run its course.

ittakes2 · 19/07/2017 10:11

I would take him as he's had two separate episodes and two weeks is a long time. Same thing happened to my son and they discovered he'd picked up a bacteria that was very contagious and the public health organisation rung me to go through where he might have picked it up. He even had have a separate hand towel from the rest of us to minimise the risk of spreading it.

ittakes2 · 19/07/2017 10:17

Can I just add - my son wasn't contagious just by being next to people in the surgery. It was only if he had not washed his hands properly after going to the toilet and then touched other things.

spewylewis · 19/07/2017 11:06

I've just had a chat with the doctor on the phone and have an appointment for later today. DS is feeling fine today and has eaten breakfast, so will just need to see how the next few days go. Thanks all.
