Being stupid

Quite paranoid about silly work incident. Was chatting to boss and suddenly my phone (right in front of him/us) started coming up with Facebook notifications - innocuous messages from a friend about our plans for tonight. I looked at it then made eye contact with him and visibly turned it round, so as not to to disturb. However now I'm paranoid it looked like I thought he was snooping?!

I'm new to the workplace and would appreciate advice on being less, well, awkward!

If I was your boss I'd have just thought you were ignoring it although it depends how long you looked at it for before turning it around. If you read all the messages and then turned it around that's pretty rude. But if you just glanced at it that's fine.

Cheekybintoooo · 18/07/2017 23:45

I just saw it light up, glanced, looked at him and turned it round. It was because I didn't want it to flash and disturb us/look unprofessional, but can see how it may have looked like I didn't want him snooping? If that makes sense?

Wish I had quietly moved it side rather than ostentatiously turning it over though. There is a possibility I am overthinking!!!!

Turn facebook notifications off during working hours?!

CoughLaughFart · 18/07/2017 23:54

Honestly? I very much doubt he gives a shit.

Cheekybintoooo · 18/07/2017 23:54

Understood! But late now tho

I should imagine he/she was more concerned you had your phone on your desk, rather than notifications!!

Cheekybintoooo · 19/07/2017 00:07

Honestly? Yes I also very much doubt he gives a shit but he's my superior so yknow don't like being rude and all that. And yes I can have it on my desk, I work silly house in a corporate job and it's accepted that people have phones on desks/eat at desks

My advice would be to keep your phone in your bag except when absolutely necessary. I would also turn off the notifications.

thebigbluedustbin · 19/07/2017 00:19

No, what you did is absolutely the normal response to notifications coming in in a meeting. Most people would turn their phone over to prevent distractions/make sure people they're meeting with know they have their full attention. He won't even have registered it as a 'thing'.

Shedmicehugh · 19/07/2017 00:20

If it's accepted you have your phone on your desk, then surely it's accepted you get messages!

Not seeing the problem!

thebigbluedustbin · 19/07/2017 00:21

Also I've never had a job where phones weren't allowed out/carried everywhere by employees and bosses etc. it's normal at least in my field that people have their phones and have notifications -- it's the primary way we all communicate with each other.

Sorry, I take back what I wrote before. It obviously depends on your job/industry.
