To have been a bit annoyed by this school class? (

I may well be being v v v unreasonable as I've had very little sleep and am feeling pretty grumpy!

I took my two young children to a small playground near our house early this afternoon. It's good because it's fenced off and doesn't have very much there so doesn't usually get very busy. We arrived to find an entire school class of 30 kids there with about 3 teachers or TA's. They basically took over the entire area meaning mine and the other small children there couldn't play and so we had to leave. They were being very boisterous and hogging all of the playground equipment. Most of the time they were not even using it properly but seemed to be playing The Walking Dead. They were only about 7 or 8 so I was shocked they even knew that show! Anyway it meant them using the one slide and small climbing frame as their "base" to jump off and congregate on. So the little one seems there felt a bit intimidated and obviously it wasn't that safe as children that age don't think to watch where they are going.

The teachers sat at a picnic table chatting. I've been to the school they are from and they have several nice playgrounds with their own equipment and activities so I'm really not sure why they were there. I know it's a public space and they had every right but they took it over completely. We were not the only people to arrive and then leave because of them.

So aibu to have been a bit annoyed?

YANBU but you should have said something at the time. I would have told them to leave. No reason why a whole school class should be at a small playground when they have suitable ones at school.

Saiman · 18/07/2017 17:08

Hmmm tad annoying. But I also think its great that schools do stuff like that at the end of the year.

Our school has merit points that kids earn for being kind (for example) and the house with the most points gets to choose their treat. They do this each term. So maybe it was a treat they earned.

RedHelenB · 18/07/2017 17:08

One time hardly worth getting upset over.

HeyRoly · 18/07/2017 17:09

Probably just an end of term treat for the kids (and a breather for their jaded teachers!).

The idea that you should have asked them to leave is ludicrous. They had just as much right to be there as you.

Inconvenient though it was, I would have left and chalked it up to unfortunate timing.

AvoidingCallenetics · 18/07/2017 17:12

Yabu - the playgound is for children and children were using it! Yours do not take priority.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 18/07/2017 17:12

I think yabu tbh. You went to the park and it was too busy to be enjoyable so you left. It happens. Doesn't sound like the kids were doing anything wrong. If there isn't much equipment and 30 kids it is going to be 'hogged'.

Whosthemummynow · 18/07/2017 17:13

You're upset that children were playing in a park.

Really?!

AmysTiara · 18/07/2017 17:13

It was probably a one off for the end of term. They are children and playgrounds are for children so YABU

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 18/07/2017 17:13

I couldn't get upset about just one time, it was probably an end of term treat. All playgrounds will be swarming with school age children for the next six weeks. I'd save my annoyance for week five if I were you.

I work with pre-schoolers, lately they have all been playing the "zombie" game complete with pretend biting each other...I am deeply hoping none of them have seen The Walking Dead! (Yet have terrible suspicions...)

HipsterHunter · 18/07/2017 17:14

Some children were playing in a park CALL THE COPS

Floggingmolly · 18/07/2017 17:14

You'd have told them to leave, Tingo? Grin Seriously? Love to be a fly in the wall for that one...
It's a kids playground. They had as much right to be there as your kids had, op Confused
Having a playground in the school grounds doesn't preclude schoolchildren taking a trip to the park.

SandyDenny · 18/07/2017 17:15

I think the teachers were being a bit unreasonable if they didn't realise that other people were being stopped from using the park.

No one trumps the other but it's reasonable to expect a park to be accessible by pre schoolers during the school day

Piratesandpants · 18/07/2017 17:15

YABVVU - unless it's your privately owned park.

StickThatInYourPipe · 18/07/2017 17:15

I would have told them to leave

And you have that authority how?

UpYouGo · 18/07/2017 17:16

I would have told them to leave.

Smile Don't be silly.

They were probably visiting the park as part of a trip or stopped for a play on the way back from somewhere.

It is annoying, but just one of those things. I'm guessing you won't give premission for you child to attend only trips if it envolves using facilities which will inconvenience the public? Libraries, picnics, end of year trips to soft play or a trampolining park?

Sirzy · 18/07/2017 17:17

Children play in parks, that's what they are for.

It's great that local facilities are being used unlike locally where they aren't used and therefore not maintained so used less

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 18/07/2017 17:17

Awww my son's school take each year group to the park on the last week of the school year. They love it.

The park is for all kids, not just yours

Starsandwishes · 18/07/2017 17:20

It's the end of the school year so it was probably a treat for the children. I doubt it's a regular thing. There's probably lots of time your child can enjoy the park compared to when he can't.

waterrat · 18/07/2017 17:23

My son (he is in reception) just went with his class to the local playground - yes there were 30 kids running around - and shock horror they were probably playing their own imaginary games instead of using the slides etc - how dare those children use their imaginations in the playground!

they are kids, they were in the playground - I think it's great the teachers do that...

AnnetteCurtains · 18/07/2017 17:24

The teachers should have been supervising them to make sure they were using the equipment properly but no I wouldn't have had a problem

GreatFuckability · 18/07/2017 17:34

there is no 'proper' way to use equipment fgs. they were playing and having fun. pull the stick out of your arse.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/07/2017 17:37

Fgs. Your kids couldn't use the park ONE TIME. I never say this, but - get a grip.

metalmum15 · 18/07/2017 17:38

Just wait until you take them on a day trip somewhere and 500 Secondary school kids turn up 😆
