To be annoyed at neighbours new speed signs...

strawberrysundaepie · 17/07/2017 21:58

Would it be legal to get a six foot high piece of wood, and spray paint that this is now a 20mph zone, and attach it to a tree on the roadside?

Would it be unreasonable to do something about such a monstrosity? Or be pleased that they are trying to protect the children?

It's probably illegal. Why have they done it? Is there a lot of speeding? They need to call the council to get the speed traps in

reuset · 18/07/2017 01:56

People ignoring the new signs? They do here.

BewareTheUndertoad · 18/07/2017 03:18

Councils tend not to allow signs, even missing pet notices get removed It is considered to be fly posting.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/07/2017 03:52

I know you can't do it here (different country though). Because people had stickers made for wheelie bins, saying '40 kph: children around'. Council told them that non-council speed signs were illegal and had to be removed.

Suspect it might be similar in U.K.

minisoksmakehardwork · 18/07/2017 04:01

Is the area actually 20mph or has someone arbitrarily decided it?

I've seen reminded stickers on bins that an area is 30mph but as far as I've seen, 20mph zones seem to be mainly parts of roads approaching primary schools.

If they're just reminding people what the speed limit is, I'd say no harm done even if it's not legal. If they're changing the speed limit then I'd do something about it. Especially if it were a monstrosity.

Realy Koala? One of our local council was giving them away a few years back. Some of my neighbours have them and no one cares. I'm in WA.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/07/2017 04:28

I'm in WA too! Maybe it depends on the council?!

We were told that the ones with 40 kph in the red circle were not allowed, as the speed limit is officially 50. Now everyone just has those ones that say something like 'Slow down - think of our kids'

Koalablue · 18/07/2017 04:42

Ah now I understand. I've only seen the 50.

user1498911470 · 18/07/2017 05:07

disappointed - I clicked on this expecting a thread about the OP being annoyed that her neighbour was keeping a flashy new speedboat on the drive #missespointofthread

OnTheRise · 18/07/2017 07:15

Your neighbours can't arbitrarily decide what the speed limit on their road should be. Report it to the council and leave it to them to sort out.

BikeRunSki · 18/07/2017 07:20

Road speed limits can only be decided by the highways authority- in this case sounds like it's the local authority. Individual househilderd can not arbitrarily decide new speed limits and attempt to enforce them.

If there is a speeding issue in your village, or you feel that the designated speed limit is too inappropriate, then contact your local authority Highways dept.

Ifailed · 18/07/2017 07:24

Most side roads in London seem to be 20 mph now.

RandomMess · 18/07/2017 07:27

Most of the city where I live is 20mph, literally just the main road through it is 30 still

Musicaltheatremum · 18/07/2017 07:27

The whole of south east Edinburgh is 20mph, even the main through roads. And it's going to expand.

Vinorosso74 · 18/07/2017 07:31

Speed limits have to be decided by the relevant authorities surely? That said I agree with their sentiment if it's a residential street.
Our London borough is all 20mph except for the major roads managed by TFL rather than the council.

minisoksmakehardwork · 18/07/2017 08:01

Wow. I didn't realise larger areas were 20mph. It's not necessarily a bad thing I think. We're quite rural though so you're talking a road, or part of rather than whole towns etc.

strawberrysundaepie · 18/07/2017 09:24

It's a 30 zone. It's a small street used as a bit of a rat run at 8am but then quiet the rest of the day. The sign is messy and hideous and has 30 crossed out, declaring it is now a 20 zone.

HappyAsASandboy · 18/07/2017 14:20

In the U.K., you are not allowed to post signs on the roadside without permission from the Highways department at the council (as they effectively own/maintain/control the verges and pavements).

You can put things on private land, which I presume would include the side of a wheelie bin), but if Highways decide it is a distraction to drivers then they can insist it is removed.

So in the case of a large, messy, inaccurate sign put on Highways controlled land, I suspect Highways would come and remove it if you reported it.

Iikkiilloo · 18/07/2017 14:56

I'd report it to the council highways dept (I think? )

MipMipMip · 18/07/2017 15:03

Contact the council, they will remove it. Make sure you put in who put the sign up so they can have a word. Maybe be anonymous so you don't get outted...

BertieBotts · 18/07/2017 15:25

I should think it will be illegal because it's confusing to drivers.

If they want the speed limit changed they need to petition the local council. They can't just put their own signs up!

user1495025590 · 18/07/2017 16:34

In the U.K., you are not allowed to post signs on the roadside without permission from the Highways department at the council (as they effectively own/maintain/control the verges and pavements).

Sometimes they own the pavements and verges, sometimes they don't .we own it outside our house. And to say you can't put signs by the roadside is patently absurd - there are gazillions everywhere you go, telling about this school fete, that restaurant, the missing cat etc etc and a million other things.
Who does the tree belong to? Is it in their garden? The y may need Planning for a very big sign

BewareTheUndertoad · 18/07/2017 16:42

Where we used to live was a private road, no-one was allowed to put signs on it, even on the trees on the private bit. Estate agents were not allowed to put them up, although that may have been due to the way they abuse such things and all put them on the same wall or tree regardless of whether they are actually acting for anyone there or not.

Missing cat posters removed from public areas but not from front gardens.

You can post on Fix My Street, and make up a name, and also post anonymously, this will go to the council and also be visible to anyone else who cares to look.

GladAllOver · 18/07/2017 16:55

Wow. I didn't realise larger areas were 20mph. It's not necessarily a bad thing I think.
Unfortunately it increases pollution because many cars have to drive in a lower gear than they would at 30.
