To can't handle it...

My DS eczema (his 7 by the way).

All he does is scratch, scratch, scratch. He didn't go to bed till 2am yesterday ! No amount of emollient would take the ease off.

DS was very severe, a couple of months ago, later on he went through a treatment, overseen by the dermatologist. This consisted of.. heavily applying the emollient, waiting till it dries a bit, apply the steroid cream and wrap those special bandages to seal it. For 2 weeks, DS skin was eczema free, he slept very well, no more itching and he enjoyed going out without scratching himself.

A week ago, when we finished his steroid treatment. He suddenly had a huge flare up ! Itching like crazy, basically the cycle started again. Not only that, my GP, once again, has greatly reduced DS amount of emollient. Under the dermatologist, we would be getting two tubs of cream, 1 cream as a bath substitute. However, my GP has reduced this once again, we only have 1 Tub of cream..which we would only get once every three months ( this is what we were getting before !), he oddly stopped his cream for which we use as a soap substitute. Before this, I was bankrupting myself, buying tubs of cream every 2nd of the week, buying more if we ran out.

I have just brought DS a load of tubifast bandages, as my GP won't prescribe this as well as a dermasilk body suit. Hoping to try the wet wrap therapy.

But it's all too much. Costing me a lot of money. AIBU to feel like I just can't handle it ?!!!

Zuza I think my DS experienced the red skin syndrome, looking it up but not as severe.

What a nightmare- you really shouldn't have to be paying for any of this. Could you write to the GP to ask for some more emollient on prescription? Dermatologists get really annoyed with GPs for not prescribing enough emollient- it needs to be slathered on as much as possible at least twice a day. If you are still under a dermatologist then ask them to write and ask for more emollient to be prescribed- if not then ask to be referred back.

My son had terrible excema, it turned out he was very allergic to dust mites. We put encasements on the mattress, duvet and pillow, and removed all the stuffed animals and it made a huge difference. Then every 8 weeks I would use a steam cleaner on his curtains and bedroom carpet. All his laundry does 2 cycles each time (we have a dryer) so the first wash cleans the dirt, the first dry kills any new baby mites, then the second wash cleans off the now dead mites and their poop and then the final dry finshes the job. He is now almost excema free and we just have to take a camping air mattress with us when we travel. There are definitely different triggers for different people, but this is an easy one to test as we got such a big improvement from the encasements alone that it was worth then doing the rest of the hard work.

If you're not asking for large amounts of emollient it's not enough. (Depending how big he is) emollients are the mainstay of treatment.
I usually prescribe a kilo gram at a time (they can't carry anymore Smile)
Can you phone the dermatology clinic? And get more advice passed onto the GPs. I'm lucky, one of my partners used to do a session a week in dermatology so he was great to go for advice and after 26 years I've learned a lot but the emollient thing he went on and on about.
I usually have the battle where the parent complains about the eczema but they have only had 250g emollient in 6 months!
Good luck

Sorry, I know you personally are asking for the emollient, but if people aren't asking (with reference to the first sentence of my last post

Both my kids treated by a homeopath, it worked wonders. It's an investment.
