Reading a ladybird book 'Fun at the Fair' with Peppa Pig.

I understand this is meant to be an empowering story, but did not feel comfortable reading these lines aloud.

'Woman are useless at this'! says Mr Labrador

and when mummy pig wins, the following comment : 'Unbelievable'
is for me just as annoying.

So its OK for men to say that woman are useless, and when they are proved wrong, it is still Unbelievable'

I dont want children to hear that woman are useless in any way or that when they achieve something that its unbelievable!

And am more interested in what meat was on the barbecue....Confused

I just read that out to DP and his suggestion was "Us?"

YABU - it's a story about pigs, not women. It's pretty offensive actually to suggest that women are worth no more than pigs

To be fair, the pigs are an example of anthropomorphis, so the representation is of a human social construct, based on (stereotypical) human families and interactions. So it may be visualised as pigs, but the stories are very people-based in a simplistic way that gets through to children.

Human meat for Peppa Pig? and I thought the sexism was bad enough!

challenging sexism, as in the Labrador doesn't think mummy pig will win as she's a woman, but when she does win, he isn't happy about it, and feels put out, hence the "unbelievable" comment. I think that was what the intent was here, but I don't think a child would understand it.I always find with Peppa pig some of the jokes are aimed at the adults watching it, that a child wouldn't pick up on and I think this was one of them.

VestalVirgin · 17/07/2017 18:45

If this was a clear bad guy after realising he was a sexist doggy he would of said some form of apology after seeing mummy pig win. He didnt, he said it was unbelievable.

Well, that'd just be plain unrealistic. Sexist men almost never admit that they are wrong.
Besides, would he have been less wrong if mummy pig had not won? No, he would still be a sexist dog.

Here's some wise words I've found on a feminist blog on tumblr:

"my feminist goal is not to convince men that girls are of value, my feminist goal is to achieve a future where the judgement of our value isn’t in the hands of men"

We should not teach girls to strive to convince men of their value. We should teach girls to strive for a future where it is irrelevant what men think.

There have been numerous studies about kids and how they receive information like this. Younger children tend not to watch critically and remember the 'lesson'. They are more likely to remember the meanness and quotes. Like "women can't do this".

So yes, not great for teaching.

Sadly, it is a message that will serve girls well. I say that as someone who played a traditionally male sport to a high level and who works in a very male dominated field. The message is that in life, from time to time people (many of whom will be male) will tell you that you can't do something because you are a woman. Ignore them.

And for boys, don't underestimate women. If you do you will probably be wrong and look foolish.

canteatcustard · 18/07/2017 08:22

In 2017 it cant be acceptable to read this to our children? That woman should accept that men say such comments and that we should ignore them?

Gong with the assumption that little boys will underestimate girls is where the problem starts. Peppa pig is a load of sexist shit anyway. The makers probably dont think it is because peppa is female but the episode with the tree house and the castle is bloody awful. I don't remember much about it as dsc has grown out of it but ill be doing my damnedest to keep my children away from it when theyre old enough to watch tv.

flumpybear · 18/07/2017 08:40

Use it as an angle to explain to your children how inappropriate mr Labrador is Wink

Dottyblue2 · 18/07/2017 08:44

Well, I'm just shocked at the amount of children the Rabbits have. That implies that they've been going at it like.... um.... rabbits. Shocking.
