Does anyone know how getting a council house works?-'

Miaoriely2017 · 17/07/2017 11:36

I have been renting my house through a housing association for 6 years ..I've been on the council list 6 years but never bidded on anything.
5 weeks ago a nice house became available so I expressed my interest.
Friday I recieved a text message inviting me to a open viewing on Wednesday.
How many other people normally attend viewings and how do they decide who gets the house?
I don't want to get too excited

Council houses are for people who need them. You clearly don't. Stop clogging the system.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 17/07/2017 11:40

I think the person who needs it most gets it.

Pretty sure the viewers are given a number of priority and the highest number gets the house.

mugginmeoff · 17/07/2017 11:41

Usually offered to the person with the highest points if they want it.

You aren't allowed to bid in my area if you already have a social let unless you need a larger or smaller home than you have, or, I assume, an adapted or ground floor home. Do those apply to you?

Birdsgottaf1y · 17/07/2017 11:45

""Council houses are for people who need them. ""

Not anymore they aren't.

Each house will have an eligibility criteria.

Some will be for working applicants only. Then there is need, amount of bids they've entered, if they can fully occupy the house, credit score (even if unemployed).

It would be unlikely to get a house on one bid. My DD is competing for HA housing and they take everyone's circumstances, earnings etc and pick the one they want.

Those being allocated the houses could easily get private rents.

These are advertised differently to those on our 'Property Pool'.

Council and HA are now selling off houses to cash only buyers.

The bedroom tax has changed everything.

Miaoriely2017 · 17/07/2017 11:50

How do I not need it?
I work with low earnings and couldn't afford to rent private.
I've been registered for 6 years..and I've been renting from housing association not council.

I'm a little confused as to why you want a council house if you're already renting through a HA. Our council sold all its housing stock to a HA, so they're the same thing here.

We can only change homes here if your circumstances change (extra/less occupants etc), mutual exchange or no one else wanted the let (extremely unlikely). Plus, if you're already housed, you'd be bottom of the bidding list anyway.

Miaoriely2017 · 17/07/2017 11:53

The area I live in anyone can bid on properties and if you are top of the list you get a viewing I think.
I don't know if it's 1 person or 3 people they let view it tho,I don't know how many people will be viewing it.
It's a lovely house,in a nice area, most of the houses are private bought so are maintained nice, the area I'm in at the minute isn't the nicest and that's main reason I want to move.

Miaoriely2017 · 17/07/2017 11:53

Think I will give them a ring and ask how many others are viewing it..don't want to get my hopes up if there's another few people looking too.

Housing association is already social housing. Why do you think you need a council house?! God's sake, another one clogging the system for people who need it, you're the second one on here today!

Birdsgottaf1y · 17/07/2017 12:02

OP, it may be for working applicants and then it's based on occupancy and credit score.

Birdsgottaf1y · 17/07/2017 12:03

""God's sake, another one clogging the system for people who need it, you're the second one on here today!""

The OP is giving up a HA house, so it's just a swap.

The house the OP is in may be for all 'bands/unemployed' so it will put a house into the system for someone who has less options.

Miaoriely2017 · 17/07/2017 12:04

I don't like the area I'm living in..this house is in a much better area.
I've just called allocations team and its top 2 but apparently as I've been on the list longer than the other person il have priority if I want it.
Now I'm confused do I start paying rent immediately or when I move in /if I decide I like it.
As I obviously am paying rent on my housing association flat.
How does it work?
I only work 16 hours so get most of the rent paid by H/B so what happens regarding that?

FuckyDuck · 17/07/2017 12:56

Find a proper job and pay your way like every other person has to. FFS

SleepFreeZone · 17/07/2017 13:00

What is with all the hate on here today? The OP has been deemed an appropriate candidate for a council house. She has waited 6 years to make it to the top of the list.

Who are you FuckyDuck to decide she is undeserved of the house based on the tiny amount of info she has given on this thread?

Alfieisnoisy · 17/07/2017 13:04

Oh do fuck off Fuckyduck

You have no idea of the OPs circumstances beyond what she has posted. Not all of us are able to work full time do sod off with your judgey bullshit.

Miaoriely2017 · 17/07/2017 13:05

The reason I work part time is to take care of my mum with dementia or she would be in a care home at 62!
So easy to judge people without knowing the facts

OP posts:
Alfieisnoisy · 17/07/2017 13:07

Well done Fuckyduck. Wanna pick up the care bill so the OP can...er....work full time and pay her way.

Judgy cow

Frouby · 17/07/2017 13:09

Christ MN is full of vile cunts today isnt it? Is the heat making all the little keyboard warriors angry? Have the holidays started? Is there a full moon?

OP in your case you will need to give notice.on your flat so check how much. Oir council used to give a weeks free rent but I am not sure how it works.

Ring your council housing department and ask or maybe have a look at the website.
