For Spoiling Dr Who?

SpoilyWoily · 16/07/2017 20:32

After the Dr Who announcement I saw a lot of horrible sexist negativity about the 13th Doctor being a female.

I posted on FB about how great I thought it was. I didn't state the actors name or anything.

An acquaintance on FB has got really upset with me for posting this 'spoiler'. I apologised but did say (nicely) it's all over the Internet now so I didn't think it was that bad. She said she shouldn't have to avoid social media and all her other friends are respectful of this and unfriended me. I messaged her when I noticed she unfriended me and she called me some names.

I've backed off now because I can't be bothered given how OTT she was with me.

My question is WIBU to post about it? I'm someone who doesn't really mind about 'spoilers' so perhaps I don't understand that perspective and will try to remember in future. I'm normally careful though with 'spoilers' so for example with GOT I might post a status update but wouldn't put spoilers in the actual update but state there may be spoilers in the comments.

I'd got it wrong anyway, had assumed Olivia Coleman who I think would make a brilliant Dr Who. I'm also still waiting for Paterson Joseph to get a turn!

laurelstar · 16/07/2017 23:59

Ridiculous! She is BVU. It's on the front page of pretty much every one of tomorrow's newspapers - they've just been on the TV paper review.

Ginosaji · 17/07/2017 00:12

@SpoilyWoily Did I heck! My step-mum tried the line "but your the eldest, you should be setting an example" i replied that at 27 years old and with a kid of her own she shouldn't need to have her older sister setting examples, there wasn't anything she could really say to that so she unfriended and blocked me too 😂

ScrumDinger · 17/07/2017 00:18

I hate twats like this who think they're so special that the world should take a vow of silence in order to delay their finding out.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 17/07/2017 00:20

On a serious note though, I'm not happy with the choice. I'm very happy for it to be a female doctor but I find her very dry and irritating. Will watch with an open mind but not a happy bunny right now.
(Sorry for entirely missing the point of the thread)

The whole "spoiler" thing is super weird. I honestly don't care about spoilers. I have known the twists to things before hand and still enjoyed them immensely. I have read the ASOIAF series so most of GoT was spoiled for me but I can honestly say it did not in anyway ruin the show for me (other than the usual "that was better in the book"). In fact thinking about it now I have read shit loads of books then watched and enjoyed adaptations. The Girl With All the Gifts was a really enjoyable book and film despite being a bit twisty at the end.

That said I think if somebody shares leaked information, stuff about films still at the pictures, stuff from books still in hardback or stuff from TV shows that have only had their US time showing it's a bit shitty. Honestly if you are that arsed don't use social media.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 17/07/2017 00:30

Hang on Gino your own family unfriended you, over spoilers! Shock Grin

Ginosaji · 17/07/2017 00:55

@SinisterBumFacedCat basically yes, i its their way of 'teaching' you a lesson when they don't get their own way with something, very narcissistic & manipulative, because they are so social media obsessed they think everyone else is

When in reality i didn't care, i was glad of the peace 😂

NormaSmuff · 17/07/2017 00:59

its all over the front of the newspapers tomorrow.
daft person

Hudson10 · 17/07/2017 01:01

I absolutely hate spoilers, so can see where she's coming from there.
However, after it's been aired it's fair game on the internet! How are you supposed to know who has or hasn't seen it?!
If you're that bothered, stay away from the internet until you have seen it otherwise it's inevitable you'll find out from one source or another. Smile
She's being a dick.

paxillin · 17/07/2017 01:04

Stuff once on TV is fair game. Up to the precious "I want my surprise" moaner to go on a social media and internet blackout.

Guepe · 17/07/2017 01:10

I don't like spoilers, but this isn't a spoiler. A spoiler gives away plot details that weren't announced prior to the movie/show/whatever being released.

In this case, the 'spoiler' is announcing the actress who's playing one of the roles. I can't think of the last time a TV show or movie kept details of its cast secret prior to its release.

Guepe · 17/07/2017 01:12

Trying to imagine how upset your (former) friend must have been every time she walked into a cinema and saw that the place was covered with movie posters with the names/faces of the cast of the movies they were showing.

CoughLaughFart · 17/07/2017 01:14

I hate people who rant about spoilers on social media but won't avoid it for so much as a couple of hours until they can watch a show they've recorded. I once had a row on the Corrie FB page with a woman who complained about them posting 'spoilers' - in reality, posting about storylines as soon as they had aired - because 'a lot of people like to record it and watch it later'. I suggested she maybe stay off FB until she'd watched the episode if she was that bothered. In return I got a rant about 'why shouldn't I be able to go on Facebook after a long difficult day at work?!?' God knows how long the silly princess expects people to wait.

Bloomed · 17/07/2017 01:15

Off topic but what do teenagers use instead of facebook?

ScrumDinger · 17/07/2017 01:18

I think it's all about Snapchat these days.

Weebo · 17/07/2017 02:09

She called you names? :o

Were they 'poo-poo' and 'smelly head' since she's clearly a 6 year old?

user1477249785 · 17/07/2017 02:17

Without trying to one-up @yesiam

I don't have a TV, I've not seen dr who since the 70 s, and I don 't even live in the UK (or on the same continent) and even I know about it!

Your friend is being nuts.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 17/07/2017 03:15

I want to know what names she called you Grin

Seriously though, people who are this precious about tv need to get a life. It's one thing not wanting to know a plot twist or whatever, but an actor?!? And from what you've said it wasn't even the name of the actor, just the sex? What a crackpot.

chemenger · 17/07/2017 03:49

Someone told me on the beach in Rhode Island USA, it would be impossible to avoid knowing.

Temporary2002 · 17/07/2017 04:56

I just posted on fb about 2 hours ago about the new doctor...hope I don't return to an empty friends list. 😉
