To think there's not a tin opener in the world that actually works as it should.

I've been through so many different designs now and the £15 one is exactly as hopeless as the 79p Wilko one.

DH has bought two electric ones recently... both ended up in the bin.

Our latest one seems like a basic design of old which I bought with hope in my heart (cannot recall them not working in the 70s when I was a lass). However, it takes about 300 turns of the handle to get it to move 1cm around the tin edge.

I have arthritis in both wrists and can no longer put up with this nonsense. Surely, in this day and age there must be a tin opener that does what it says on the tin. Sad

This thread is quite old, but if you’ve landed here looking for advice on what kitchen tools to buy, we’ve recently updated our best can opener page with loads of Mumsnetter-approved products, including both manual and electric options. We hope you find it helpful.

Also, i've just accidentally set the above photograph as my wallpaper Grin

thenightsky · 16/07/2017 19:34

YogaAndRum I remember the 'stabby' ones of old. My mum refused to have one the house as they were apparently 'an accident waiting to happen etc'. Very safety conscious my old mum.

I can never work the fancy ones so use the old fashioned simple metal ones, like the ones on a penknife but a bit bigger and easier to use.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/07/2017 19:36

The OXO Good Grips can opener is amazing - works perfectly every time, really easy to use, and takes less effort than any other tin opener I have ever tried. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

BabychamSocialist · 16/07/2017 19:39

Yeah my mum would never have a stabby one either. If the normal one wouldn't work for some reason she'd give it to my dad to open with his penknife. That was fine apparently... Hmm

grafittiartist · 16/07/2017 19:47

Did you know that tin openers were invented 100 years after tins were invented?!! Doesn't help you though- sorry!

Metellaestinhortobibit · 16/07/2017 19:50

Another vote for the oxo good grips one here!

CMOTDibbler · 16/07/2017 19:52

I have the Culinare one touch as well, and it's great

FadedRed · 16/07/2017 19:52

Snap! Babycham I've had the Kenwood one for nearly twenty years, never failed.

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 16/07/2017 19:52

I just have a basic IKEA one and it's fine. I think. I just opened a tin of tomatoes with it anyway no problem.

Dancinginthemidnight · 16/07/2017 19:54

We've got an electric one similar to the one shown upthread by Babysham. Ds is left handed and I'm cack handed and we broke so many different types of tin opener. The electric one was a revelation and is still going strong 8 years later. I'm sure it was a Tesco value so not expensive either.

NotSureYet · 16/07/2017 19:58

Best one I've ever used. Had it for years. Absolutely brilliant.

To think there's not a tin opener in the world that actually works as it should.
Huffletuff · 16/07/2017 20:00

I had no idea people used non electric tin openers unless you are camping!

I've had my Kenwood since I left home 17 years ago and it's still going strong.

JaneJeffer · 16/07/2017 20:17

Yoga Grin

I can only use the butterfly ones. My brain will not cooperate** with any other type.

PolarisStar · 16/07/2017 20:22

I'm left handed and struggle with can openers. Thankfully most stuff I buy canned has a ring pull except tuna... Blush

PolarisStar · 16/07/2017 20:29

OrlandaFuriosa · 16/07/2017 20:32

Rivers, I thought it was just me. I so cannot use it. I am going to give it away!!!

Op, thanks v much for this thread. Was going to start an identical after I dismally failed on a tin last night. I can occasionally use the butterfly ones.

The only good thing about this is that it means we hardly ever eat tinned food. Packaged, in jars, yes. Tinned , no...
