Passport help

Posting here for traffic...(sorry!)

My child's passport runs out tomorrow. We fly on Tuesday.

I have a passport office appt at 8:30am tomorrow. But the information suggests that they won't do children's passports in a day (they do do adult ones in a day). Does anyone know if I have any chance of them doing this?

I'm thinking I could try and get a flight today if that won't happen and then go to the British embassy whilst abroad to get a passport to fly home with.

Any advise/experience welcomed.

you usually need so much left on your passport though (I think 6 months).

last time I did a kids passport at the passport office it took 2 days to get back to me but that was April time so not sure if it will take longer with it being summer

Justhadmyhaircut · 16/07/2017 12:08

Also just looked and it's a no to a child's renewal in a day. . .
The old should have checked the passport before booking theory applies here!!

Cocklodger · 16/07/2017 12:12

Your child won't be allowed to fly if the passport expires so soon.
The British embassy steps in when people's passport have expired due to eg emergency medical treatment or natural disaster holding them up for a few weeks or if their passport is lost/stolen while abroad.
It is not to be used because you couldn't be arsed to check your child's passport expiry Hmm
Your best (albeit slim) chance is to tell the passport office, be honest and hope for the best while looking into how to delay or cancel your holiday without losing out too badly financially.

HiJenny35 · 16/07/2017 12:14

They won't let you fly out without enough time to return on s valid passport. Your only option is to go tomorrow and beg. Maybe you could offer to collect first thing Tuesday before your flight.

MaidOfStars · 16/07/2017 12:25

The required time left on passports is not a problem for a U.K. citizen travelling in the EU. We have freedom of movement. Anything up to the expiry date is fine.

If travelling to a non-EU country, there may be limits.

SandyDenny · 16/07/2017 12:30

There is no unexpired time, op says the passport runs out before the trip as I read it.

You can't get a child's one on the day, isn't it to stop one parent taking a child abroad without the other ones permission?

I don't think you'll be able to go

lobsterface · 16/07/2017 12:35

If flying out today is an option can't you just fly out once you've got the passport on wed or fhurs?

MaidOfStars · 16/07/2017 12:40

I thought OP was considering flying today, within the life of the passport? This also indicates to me it's an EU short hop.

SandyDenny · 16/07/2017 12:42

I see you've suggested trying to get a flight today and sorting out when you get there, sorry missed that bit, I wouldn't risk it, too many possible problems and I wouldnt want to spend my holiday trying to get a passport when it will be clear to the consulate that you knowingly flew when you were aware you couldn't get home.

It sounds like a mad idea to me

MaidOfStars · 16/07/2017 12:48

Oh, unless it's to Ireland? UK citizens can travel without a passport then. But you need an identity card of some kind and not sure your child will have anything suitable.

BusterGonad · 16/07/2017 12:48

I believe you won't even get on the flight today anyway!

WicketWoo · 16/07/2017 12:52

Thank you all for your input. Sounds like I shouldn't risk it. I was really hoping someone might have done it and it was fine.

I think my DH is going to stay behind and hopefully fly out on Thursday with our DS and I'll go earlier with the DDs. Not ideal but lessons to me to check passports in future. We often go to the US and I'm paranoid about the 6 additional months for that but just a short flight to they EU and I didn't even consider passports.

I guess it's only going to get worse with visas and the like when brexit happens...

If you go to this page and select the cup try you're going to and click entry requirements it should tell you if you need 6 months or not OP

Lexieblue · 16/07/2017 12:54

Country not cup

Snap8TheCat · 16/07/2017 12:55

Why will it get worse? Most people do indeed check their paperwork. It will get worse for the disorganised amongst us sure, but that's not most people.

Snap8TheCat · 16/07/2017 12:56

It doesn't matter if you need 6 months or not, passport runs out before they fly home!

WicketWoo · 16/07/2017 13:07

I meant worse because we'll need to be organised enough to get a visa too. Didn't mean to offend (and obviously would be fine if you are organised in any case).

I had to get my sons passport renewed while in the states about a month ago. They told me the uk no longer issues passports abroad - all requests are sent to the uk anyway. Took a few weeks but was no rush on it. Much less than the 6 week window though.

Andrewofgg · 16/07/2017 13:11

I doubt if any country is going to add us to the visa list because of Brexit.

But we will still need to avoid leaving it to the last minute!

SchnooSchnoo · 16/07/2017 13:16

You don't actually need a valid passport to travel within mainland Europe, and an expired passport will do as ID. The problem is getting in and out of the uk, and flying. You used to be able to do it on the ferry, but this may no longer be the case, you could look into that?

kkkkaty123 · 16/07/2017 13:26

Hi op. I recently had to go to hmpo for dd. It was such an easy thing to do. They said it could have taken up to a week, we received it two days later. Obviously don't rely on that. But they were so organised we were in and out in ten minutes.

kkkkaty123 · 16/07/2017 13:30

Just as a by the by does anyone know why they don't issue the children's passport in s day ?

Iruka · 16/07/2017 13:36

There are more checks to perform for children for safeguarding reasons

cardibach · 16/07/2017 13:42

Schnoo you don't need a passport between Schengen countries. We aren't in that agreement so you do need a passport iirc.

kkkkaty123 · 16/07/2017 13:47

Thanks iruka I did wonder if it was safeguarding issues
