AIBU?

To think this is so cruel and irresponsible

We took youngest Ds to a fair on our way home as a treat. He only wanted to go on the bouncy castle.

I noticed loads of people either carrying a tiny, plastic fish tank or a small bag with a goldfish in it. Neither had much water in. The prize stalls were handing them out.

Lots of small children were charging about as excited, swinging said bag/tank about. There was no care or thought from parents to take them off their dc.

We left after Ds had a bounce and on our way out noticed a couple of dead goldfish. One thrown at the overfull bin and one out the bag on the pathway.

Surely this is wrong? Why isn't it banned?

I hadn't seen it for years until this year when I've suddenly seen it again.

I can't believe it's allowed, it's cruel.

Thanks so much for that x2boys, I'll have a look, I think he would love that, he loves his disco ball but for some reason the lava lamp went down like a lead ballon.

Cheers Flowers

I cannot imagine how anyone would have thought that a good idea!

I once read a novel where a family won a pig - the fair was for farmers and it could be assumed everyone there would have the space for a pig, so that was somewhat reasonable. (The family in the novel did not, however, and hilarity ensued)

But goldfish? There is and was no population group that can be expected to have a tank for a goldfish as a matter of course, so why hand them out as prize?

For all I know, fish cannot even survive in a regular bowl of water, something to do with the oxygen in water decreasing rapidly.

Why do that sort of thing to an animal AND a child? Many children won't know how to take care of a goldfish and think it is fine to just put it in a bowl of water, and then would be heartbroken when it dies. Just cruel.

they only have little hearts Oh bless him, your poor DS. He at least has been taught some compassion for living creatures. Some awful stories on here, cannot imagine why this was made legal again.

Speaking of pigs, Vestal, my great gran got a pig, they even had the room. She decided it's too cute to eat so she gave it a bath and put a bow on it Grin.

We were offered a live goose to keep and then kill for Christmas- we said NO! Shock

Unfortunately it's legal as long as the winner is 16. Yes, write to rspca and also the local authority. It's very cruel
