Job resignation and CV query

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 15/07/2017 22:28

Hi everyone.

I'm applying for a job that mentions that it would be desirable to have experience in a specific setting.

I have some experience of this, however I resigned after working a couple of months in the setting.

AIBU to ask you all:

a) Whether it's still worth me putting this experience on my CV and in my cover letter for the job?

b) How to give my reasons for leaving on the CV?

Thanks everyone :)

(I haven't given much information about the work situation so far so as not to out myself, but I'm happy to give more information if needed! :) )

(b) no, not unless asked.

As above yes include it and no dont bring up why you left etc unless they do. Then say the company wasnt for you even though you enjoyed the type of work etc. Then dont say anymore.

Thanks Still and Notsosure :)

What other replies said, good advice.

The only thing is that 2 months could look like you didn't pass your probation period.
I'd also be aware that they could ask for a reference from them so if you left on bad terms this could be problematic.

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 16/07/2017 18:40

Thanks Witchend - that's a good point. I'd like to make my reasons for leaving as clear as possible, especially because, as you've mentioned, the recruiters for the new job may think that I was sacked from the other job.

I'm a bit stuck on how I can write my reasons for leaving on my CV. Is there a way that I could do this?

Do you need that employer as a referee? Otherwise you normally specify who your referees are once you get to that point in the process. I would just put it on your CV, then if you get an interview and they ask you about it you can tell them your reasons .

Notsosureanymoors · 16/07/2017 18:49

I doubt they'll automatically think you were sacked. If they were interested they'll ask you what happened and you can explain. But unless you've had lots of jobs and only held them for short periods i doubt they'll even notice on your cv that that job was only for a short time.

You shouldn't normally write a reason for leaving on the cv - only give it if asked specifically on the application form. If they do, just be honest but vague and say you resigned because the place wasn't the right fit but you enjoyed the type of work.

If it's your most recent post it may be a bit tricky as they would expect you to use the employer as a referee. Usually they only want 2 referees including the current employer, and it's up to you to choose who else to ask, so as long as you had one more recent position then you can just use that and one other former employer.

If you were only there 2 months, did you gain much worthwhile experience? If not then I'd leave it off but if it may be the thing that gets you the job I'd include it.

I once gave notice after 3 weeks because the place was so terrible. I don't put that on my CV!

No need to say why you left on your CV. They won't assume sacked but they may ask about it in interview so have a good, careful answer prepared.
