New job - want to negotiate maternity package - WWYD?

This is more of a WWYD type post - posting here for traffic as had no responses on employment threads.

I've been approached by a big firm and asked to join their team. I wasn't actually looking to move jobs as we are about to TTC but the role is very tempting and it's a great opportunity. I had an initial discussion with the head of the team and told her honestly that I'm reluctant to move as I want to start a family soon. I figured I may as well put it on the table. She said this is not an issue for her provided I am willing to return to work after mat leave.

I have a formal interview with them next week and given how much they've pursued me already, I'm expecting an offer to follow quite soon. My question is should I renegotiate the maternity package at the offer stage and how do I go about this? I'm thinking of asking them to agree to give me the enhanced package after six months rather than 12 - I think that's fair since they've approached me rather than the other way around. Any advice welcome! Thanks

Yes, if they want you and you're happy to stay where you are then ask for anything and everything. Could you translate the value of the maternity package into an increase in salary though as obviously that will be indefinite rather than only for a 6-9m period.

Well, you've already made it clear you're planning on starting a family, so it's on the table already. I assume you're not pregnant yet, otherwise your timings might not work anyway.

I would. present as a -while family is not imminent it would give confidence re how much they want you etc.

Thanks for the tips. I work in the UAE so you only get half pay for a short period of time unless you work 12 months. I'd also have to wait out my current notice period before moving which is three months and I'm about to go on secondment which might delay handing in notice by another three months so potentially looking at 18month delay on accruing full rights. Not trying to drip feed just didn't want to make the OP massively long. I've already told them about all this as well and they're happy to wait. I actually withdrew my interest from the role due to timing and they asked me to reconsider (which is why I've been so upfront now).

I think I'll ask for them to tie enhanced mat package into probation and then they can take it off me if I don't return to work. I'm not already pregnant but I had a miscarriage earlier this year and we agreed we'd start trying again this month (big holiday so wanted to wait so not in first trimester while away). I don't want to defer trying for 9-12 months just for the sake of a job. Has anyone negotiated benefits on a move? Thanks

Unfortunately I think this is one benefits negotiation that may well ensure you are not employed. It basically says you want to have a baby and take as much paid time off as you can, maybe 3-4 babies.
Unless you are the only person who can do this job as it's very niche, it would put employers off.

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 16/07/2017 12:19

Yes I am saying that I want to have a baby - absolutely. They've said that is fine by the and they'll support that so I'm just asking them to put their money where their mouth is.

I will see how the interview goes and what they come back to me with. What I do is quite niche, I don't think they're speaking to anyone else. Happy to walk away anyway as quite content where I am so I'll just see what they say. Thanks for the pointers.
