The pavement is for pedestrians?

This has bothered me for a while but complete lack of sleep deprivation has turned me into a raging bull.

I don't drive (medical condition so 'learn to drive' wouldn't be the best advice) and so walk a lot.

Now, I have sympathy that parking your car is sometimes limited and that a lot of the time you need to park in awkward places and car slightly on the curb. However, it sends me into a rage when inconsiderate cockwombles park near enough their entire car on the path meaning you can barely squeeze by.

I can't get my pushchair past them most of the time which is annoying, on quieter roads I do just go on the road around it swearing or slightly on the persons front lawn (not ideal I know but needs must) but today I was walking down a busy road with a wall and/or spiky bushes on the other side and several people had parked this way. I was on he verge of writing a note, they made me that mad I was going to be one of those people and write a bloody NOTE!!! Instead I'm writing an aggressive post on mumsnet to vent.

AIBU to think that the pavement is for pedestrians?

I hate pavement wankers with a passion. It used to really bother me when I had to push a pram around London. Luckily where I live now parking on the pavement would probably damage your car as the pavements are between 50 cm and half a meter from the road surface!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 15/07/2017 21:22

I have told someone off for parking like this.
I'd just picked my 6 year old up from school and had my toddler in his buggy.
Had to then walk out into the road around a badly parked car who'd left no room. The driver was still in the car so I shouted "Thank you for blocking the pavement!" in the window as I went by.
She jumped out of her skin! The pedestrian behind me had a go at her too.

Another time I was walking down a narrow pavement next to a very busy main road. Had my children with me.
A car pulled up on the pavement in front of me, heading towards me. It stopped just short of me and was totally blocking the pavement.
I just stood there and stared at the driver, who looked very cross. She shouted "Oh all right then!" and pulled back into the road.
There was a teenage girl in the passenger seat who looked hideously embarrassed by it all.

Binkybix · 15/07/2017 21:33

I once thought I could squeeze my pram passed a car badly parked on the pavement. Turns out it couldn't fit and the car got a little scratch. Oh well.

I'm in London, where I think it is actually illegal to pavement park.

gingergenius · 15/07/2017 21:35

@64PooLane there are times when you can legally ride on pavements - the problem with this situationwas that the parent cyclist was effectively encouraging the child to weave around the rear of cars turning into the junction, thus 'popping' out from behind a car, in front of me, on the inside of the give way junction line (iyswim) which given the kid's age (4/5 on a very small bike) was horribly scary for me and the poor child. The parent cyclist decided that leaving the kid in the middle of the road and banging aggressively on my window was a good solution to his questionable road safety skills!!!Hmm

AwaywiththePixies27 · 15/07/2017 22:02

YNBU! Drives me bloody mad!

ALL the drivers do it around here. They park ON the pavement at school run time so they're precious cars dont get scratched.

I suffer with my back and on flare-ups I have to plan even which bit of the road I'm going to walk on (flat bit/raised bit). No doubt someone's parked their car there, after all 'no one else needs it'. Hmm

There was a brill campaign poster going around about this. Will have to see if I can find it.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 15/07/2017 22:42

We live in a village with a wide bend in the road. Cars park all along one side leaving one lane which you can't see round. Cars often meet head on in the middle and one will have to go up the path to go round. They can't just pull into a space because that would be, you know, too easy.

I walk my children back and forth along the path every day to school. We have often had cars crawl along the path at us, driver waving apologetically like we won't mind being run over. I actually had to pull them out of the way of a lorry which came up the path when the car coming the other way left it no room. The wheels were bigger than my dds.

AtHomeDadGlos · 15/07/2017 22:47

I always try and squeeze my buggy through. Sometimes I accidentally leave a long scratch down the side of the doors.

Park like a cock and your car will get damaged.

AtHomeDadGlos · 15/07/2017 22:48

Oh I should add that there's a plumber who does it near me quite often. So I've made several calls asking for a quote for a nonexistent job and sent him miles out of town. Just a little slice of revenge. (NB: always turn off sending your number if you're planning on doing this as they then can't call you back!)

Mammylamb · 15/07/2017 22:52

Sends me crazy. While on mat leave a combination of pavement parkers and roadworks meant i had to take the Pram on a steep verge to get to the house. Pram almost toppled over and I fell keeping it up. The following day a car left a tiny space which I managed to squeeze through with the Pram. Only to find a road sign blocking the path to my house. I'm usually mild mannered but finally cracked after weeks of almost getting killed by idiot drivers and inconsiderate parkers meaning I had to walk on the road. I picked up the traffic sign, through it into the grass verge and shouted at the workmen for being so inconsiderate. Then I went home and left baby with daddy for five minutes for me to go down to the workmen and give them a dressing down about the roadworks and the obstructions that they were adding to. One pretended not to speak english. The bravest of them eventually apologised and promised to leave space for Prams to pass.

MrsJamin · 15/07/2017 22:55

Yanbu, I hate this so much! We walk to school, so I walk for over 4 miles a day and see this so much! Some of the pavements are only about 70cm across, so even just a little bit of wheel is so inconsiderate! One day last week a van actually drove in front of me whilst attempting to park on the other side of the road. I stopped and gave him a right earful but all he could say was "I was just trying to park!" SO inconsiderate, if I'd have been with my children I'd have actually taken down his details and told the police.

MrsJamin · 15/07/2017 22:56

Another bugbear is inconsiderate homeowners who leave their bushes to grow so much in the front that you can barely walk on the pavement without being prickled. Argh!

CheshireChat · 15/07/2017 23:28

I used to see this all the bloody time at our old house, particularly annoying as most houses had a nice big drive.

And to top it off, it's an area with lots of wheelchairs and mobility scooters and whoever did the pavement around must have been drunk as it was so inclined you had to really hold on to your pram to make sure it doesn't tip.

I like to think wheelchairs are more stable, but I'm not sure.

CheshireChat · 15/07/2017 23:29

Errant around in there Confused.

tofudeepfried · 15/07/2017 23:57

You can take a picture and report to local council. They will do a visit and ticket them and or warning letters

CoarseConcepts · 16/07/2017 04:07

@AtHomeDadGlos @StarryCorpulentCunt

Would it be wrong to think that if the owner saw you damaging their car then an equally illegal smack around your face would be swift and just?

You are cowardly both in bragging about criminal damage with online anonymity as well as doing it when no one can see you. I've no doubt you wouldn't be quite so brave as to do it with witnesses.

insancerre · 16/07/2017 06:20

Coarse
Don't be daft
Assault would be a crime and violence is never justified
The problem could be avoided by not parking like a twat
The car owner has a choice of where to park
The buggy pusher has no choice ex kept to try and squeeze past

If they were there I'd quite happily give them a smack round the face for parking like a cockwomble. Why should I push my child into the road just so that their wingmirror can stand a better chance of not being damaged.

Also, damage to property isn't the same as damage to a person: the similar reaction to me scratching their car would them scratching my buggy.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 16/07/2017 08:20

Well, whilst the buggy pusher can in theory go around the vehicle (shouldn't have to though - why should a buggy pusher have to walk IN the road because some inconsiderate knob has parked on most/all of the pavement which the buggy pusher would use if they could.

How fo you propose a person in a mobility scooter or a wheelchair does this?

"oh drat - some arse has parked all on the pavement which I should have access to go along - never mind I'll just ride along in the road for the next five minutes".

Have you ever seen a wheelchair hey knocked down? I have and it was pretty nasty. All because the twat thought a zebra crossing didnt apply to them when they saw the wheelchair user already crossing. If people don't care that much about someone already crossing a zebra crossing. I doubt they care even more so about whether a wheelchair can squeeze by the 2 inch bit of pavement they've been so kindly left to manouvre.

LittleBooInABox · 16/07/2017 08:23

I live on a road with a school, it is mum intention to start walking around in football boots (with the studs) I shall assume if they insist on parking on the path they don't mind if people walk over it!

Halo
AwaywiththePixies27 · 16/07/2017 08:25

Isn't it in London where you can't park on the streets? At all.

I'm all for that being expanded.

RibenaMonsoon · 16/07/2017 08:47

At my local co-op, theres this lady that frequents there alot and she parks like a woman posessed. Not just slightly mounting the pavement but about half the car on there. First time she did it she got the evil glare from me, she apologised and said she was in a hurry.

I saw her a second time about a month later doing the exact same thing! Only this time she drove right behind me and nearly hit the buggy with my son in it. I immediately took out my phone, took various pictures of her dangerous parking, got some good mugshots of her in the car too. She got out and i let her have it. Instead of apologising she started being aggressive. Ive sent the photos to the dvla along with the series of events.
Hopefully she will gw5t whats coming to her! Evil witch!

MarcelineTheVampire · 16/07/2017 09:00

Good for you Ribena

It's illegal to park on the pavement in London by a byelaw but not anywhere else. Some other cities are looking into it though.
Cycling on foot ways is illegal for everyone including children but police official policy is only to prosecute when it is dangerous. Foot ways aren't the same as pavements though. There are plenty of places around here where you can cycle on the pavements but they all have shared path signs.

fourquenelles · 16/07/2017 09:28

I fantasise that my super power is being able to flip pavement parkers' cars over on to their sides into the road. Just put my hand under the car and FLIP. I know it would block the road but hey, collateral damage.
