To think camping is absolutely bollocks

It's crap isn't it?

Everyone else has fancy tents you can stand up in, we have a squished up, leaky four man. There's a puddle in the middle of it. It's rained non stop. My head is aching. I had an argument with DH over putting up the tent. Everyone has a sore back. Nobody can dry out. The kids (7 and 10) tag teamed us by needing the loo all night and wanting one of us to come with them. We are meant to be here for one more night. Aibu to go home early?

We used to enjoy camping, but I think our tent days have reached a natural conclusion. It's shit unless it's blistering sun. If we wanted to be stuck indoors with whining kids we could do it in the comfort of our own home, with ready access to toilets and kettles. It always ends up raining and it's really properly lashing so not even the type you can go out in anyway

We are poor and this is the only type of holiday we can afford, but I really don't think it's worth it

I've camped several times in Australia, in the outback, july/august time so not too hot during the day and way too cold (as in your water bottle freezes) at night for snakes to be active. It's a lovely experience, sleeping next to a campfire, watching shooting stars above you. I did once have a close encounter with a kangaroo that stood about five feet away from me, watching me squat behind a bush going to the loo!

I love it but only on my own or with a good female friend. Camping brings out the worst in men.
You have a field, a tent and total relaxation. I do have must haves when camping, at least 4 new nooks, a double blow up bed with integral pump, a one throw pop up tent I'm not interested in tent poles and hassle and a proper toilet bucket becasue I'm not going out in the night.
Camping chair and sun lounger with cushions and a sun shade.

I'm going camping in the woods with some good friends in august and I cannot wait.

Books not nooks|

PeachPearPotato · 16/07/2017 00:22

YABU.

You need a decent tent, wine, and decent beds. Try going closer to home on sunny days until children are bigger. ⛺☀️🍾

ethelfleda · 16/07/2017 00:26

YABU - camping is loads of fun. Especially cooking breakfast in the morning. I love camping Smile

HipsterHunter · 16/07/2017 01:04

If people hate the midnight toilet trips - travel johns are your friend. Seriously, they have revolutionised night time wees for me.

Kittychatcat · 16/07/2017 01:16

The closest I've ever been to camping is a hotel room with a view looking over some fields! I'd much prefer to stay at home than be in a wet tent, YANBU

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/07/2017 02:43

Not RTFT, had to stop and comment on this.....

Camping is a time to have a break from the daily grind and relax.

Are you for real?!

Camping is normal family life with none of the things we take for granted such as light, heat, comfort and good food.

Its punishment for not working hard enough to get a proper holiday, and I say this as someone who cannot afford a proper holiday! For us it is camping or nothing, so we choose NOTHING!

whirlycurly · 16/07/2017 08:39

We live in a very popular camping area. I go to the cafe on one camp site fairly often and you get a birds eye view of the poor buggers trying to pack away a tonne of equipment, flag, sky dish etc.

It doesn't resemble fun in any way to me and is invariably all done while dodging lashing rain. All I want to do on holiday is put clothes in a suitcase and turn up at an airport. It's bad enough unpacking a holiday suitcase once you're back, never mind the kitchen sink and fridge as well.

robinia · 16/07/2017 08:42

Even with a fancy tent that you can stand up in it's bollocks.
I swore my camping days were over 20 years ago. Made a big mistake and bowed to pressure a couple of years back. Took about an hour to go pear-shaped. Never again.

KatharinaRosalie · 16/07/2017 08:42

You need a decent tent, wine, and decent beds - I have a decent king size bed at home, and supply of wine. Why add all the hassle of a tent?

Peepeep · 16/07/2017 08:46

I have very fond memories of camping with my parents when I was small, so I am all nostalgic and rose-tinted about it, so can't help by say YABU.

However I have not yet attempted camping with DC (DH not keen at all) so I have yet to experience the reality check that I would undoubtedly receive, so YANBU!

whatalifethisis · 16/07/2017 09:47

Camping at Canbridge folk festival later this month. Waiting for wanky bell tent to arrive as I've had enough of waking with my face pressed up against the walls of the tent. Self inflating mattresses are your friend and we take duvets because I feel claustrophobic in a sleeping bag.

We have a big box in the loft which contains everything we need so we can just get it down and go.

Bell tent is 6-8 berth for two of us and even 6ft 3 dp can stand up in it,

Those are just some of the things we have done over the years to make camping more comfortable.

rightwhine · 16/07/2017 09:52

Camping is great as long as you are warm and dry. Oh and now I'm older there had to be head height and a toilet too.

Even in the rain it's family bonding time playing board games. At home the teenagers turn their noses up at this suggestion and we are all in separate rooms doing our own thing.

robinsongyal · 16/07/2017 09:52

Come better prepared, buy a new tent, stop winging..

robinsongyal · 16/07/2017 09:53

*whinging

Topseyt · 16/07/2017 10:02

Robinsongyal, we had all the equipment and a good tent.

I still hated it and am would be happy to continue whinging.

It was awful, hated it and nothing could ever persuade me to try it again. I would rather have no holiday. If DH and the DDs are that bothered they can go without me.

MotherofPearl · 16/07/2017 10:10

Holidays are meant to be a break from normal life, not harder.

This.
My DP AND DC went camping last weekend (I stayed at home with the baby Grin). The amount of preparation before and sorting stuff out afterwards (drying the tent, washing sleeping bag, cleaning camp stove etc) really made me wonder how it could possibly be worth it.

LovelyBath77 · 16/07/2017 10:20

It is when it is wet

It is great when sunny.

Sarahrose21 · 16/07/2017 10:28

I used to loathe camping, waking up cold and damp or boiling and sweaty and only slept in a tent if I absolutely had to (i.e at a festival) then I met my DH who has a vw which we are converting to a camper, and I've been converted too, it's great fun in a van! We're even planning to take DC after theyre born in the new year :)

engineersthumb · 16/07/2017 11:24

I really like camping. I'm a practical person now flying a desk so it's quite nice to do the odd "field fix" on kit/cars/life!!!

SaucyJack · 16/07/2017 11:52

"I have never understood why anyone would want to go on holiday and actually have to build their accommodation when they get there."

But that's all part of the fun for happy campers. DP likes to go all cave man and builds a fire, the kids fuss about with cushions, fairy lights, and the coffee table and chairs, and I get smashed by 2pm and make crass innuendos about the size of other male campers' erections.

Plus, there's the traditional row on the last day over getting the tent back in the bag. Good times!

Camping is just a Marmite thing innit. You either love going back to self-sufficient basics in a field, or you don't. It's not a punishment for not being able to afford a hotel for loads of people.

KatharinaRosalie · 16/07/2017 11:56

You either love going back to self-sufficient basics in a field - um, driving to an organised camp site and bringing a tent you can stand up in; beds, toilet, fridge, table, chairs, plates and cutlery, board games, cushions, sofa and kitchen sink is not exactly surviving in the wilderness..

TheStoic · 16/07/2017 11:59

Loathe camping.

If a holiday is not a better standard of living than my daily life, it's not a holiday.

GriefLeavesItsMark · 16/07/2017 12:09

Sleeping in a tent is one of the (many) reasons I would never go to 'Glasto'.

Once camped at a festival in a small tent, it was shit. Next year went back with a bigger tent and better equipment, still shit.
